New England vs NY Giants Preseason Week 4 Free Pick & Lines

Written by on August 29, 2016

If it wasn’t for the New York Giants, the New England Patriots would have two more Super Bowl titles. A little bit less on the line Thursday as the two close the preseason against one another. If the Patriots do play Tom Brady, it will be the last time we see him until Week 5 of the regular season due to his Deflategate suspension. The Giants are home favorites in online NFL betting.

Patriots vs Giants Historic Betting Series

This will be the 12th consecutive year the two teams will close the preseason by facing one another. The Giants won last year in Foxboro, 12-9, and lead the preseason series, 16-9. Chris Boswell had four field goals in last year’s game. Brady was among the 34 players who didn’t play against the Giants, who rested quarterback Eli Manning and most other starters as well. You are probably looking at more of the same on Thursday. Kicker Stephen Gostkowski also provided all of the scoring for New England, which left the offense in the hands of third-stringer Ryan Lindley. These teams played last regular season at MetLife as well and New England won 27-26. Gostkowski hit the winning 54-yard field goal with one second left. Both New York’s Odell Beckham and New England’s Rob Gronkowski had the longest TD catches of their careers: Beckham for 87 yards and Gronkowski for 76. Brady threw for 334 yards. Manning threw for 361 yards, 104 to Beckham.

Why Bet on New England?

The Patriots are looking to complete a perfect preseason as they are 3-0 after winning 19-17 in Carolina last Friday in a potential Super Bowl preview. Brady looked sharp in his preseason debut, throwing a 33-yard touchdown pass to Chris Hogan. Brady’s other two drives failed to produce points. It marked the first time Brady came off the bench since 2001 when he replaced Drew Bledsoe in the second game of the regular season. Jimmy Garoppolo started and played the first three series (13 snaps). Brady replaced him for four series (16 snaps), before Garoppolo returned for three more series by playing into the third quarter (14 snaps, not including kneel-downs). Garoppolo finished 9-of- 15 for 57 yards, with no touchdowns and no interceptions. Cyrus Jones, the team’s top draft choice (60th overall) out of Alabama showed why he was one of the best punt returners in college football in 2015 with a 60-yard return in the third quarter that set up a short field and led to Jacoby Brissett’s 12-yard touchdown pass to receiver DeAndre Carter. Meanwhile, center Bryan Stork has failed his physical with the Washington Redskins, nullifying a trade they made with the Patriots last week. It is uncertain why he failed the physical, but Stork has suffered multiple concussions in his first two seasons. He will almost surely be released by the Pats now. The Pats may not play either Garoppolo or Brady in this one and start the rookie Brissett. He has played only in the second half of the first three preseason games (totaling 77 snaps). Brissett entered against Carolina with 3:48 remaining in the third quarter, and finished 9-of- 9 for 85 yards, with one touchdown. “What does each guy need? How can we do the best we can for each guy to let them get the reps they need, but how do we get the team ready for what they need to be ready for? They all need to be ready for different things,” Coach Bill Belichick said of his QB rotation for this game.

Why Bet on New York?

The Giants got their first win of the preseason on Saturday at the Jets, 21-20. Manning was 10 of 15 for 65 yards and an interception while playing one series into the third quarter. The Giants’ starters managed just 61 total yards against Todd Bowles’ defense. Coach Ben McAdoo was so disgusted, he wouldn’t rule out playing some offensive starters in Thursday’s game against the Patriots. In recent years, it has become customary around the league for most starters to sit out that game as a precaution. “No one is happy with the way the first offense operated,” McAdoo said. “We need to improve, we need to make sure we are going forward, so we give guys opportunities to showcase their abilities, but frustration doesn’t solve anything. At the same point in time, we need to improve, we need to execute better and we need to play forward. We can’t be going backwards.” On the bright side, receiver Victor Cruz played his first game in 22 months. Cruz caught only one pass – a four-yarder to the right side on the first play of the second half. Cruz was targeted on just one other pass. Early in the second quarter, Manning threw long to Cruz, who had lined up in the left slot. Cornerback Buster Skrine was beaten, but the Jets’ defensive front was in pursuit of Manning, who couldn’t get the ball far enough downfield. Safety Marcus Gilchrist almost intercepted the pass. Cornerback Eli Apple, the Giants’ first-round draft choice this year, saw extensive action after missing the game in Buffalo the previous week with a strained leg muscle. New York has lost tight end Matt LaCosse to a knee injury as he will need surgery and be sidelined indefinitely. LaCosse, 23, had impressed this spring and summer, and it appeared he was going to play a significant role, especially considering his ability as an all-around tight end. The Giants have struggled badly with blocking at this position the past two weeks, and for much of the past few years.
