The New York Jets haven’t made the playoffs since 2010 and it’s fair to say that coach Adam Gase is likely on a bit of a hot seat entering 2020 with New York off another losing campaign and Gase allegedly losing the locker room at times. Here’s an overview of the New York Jets and their NFL Odds as it stands.
New York Jets Odds After Free Agency Week 1
2019 recap
The Jets’ season essentially ended in Week 1 when they blew a 16-0 third-quarter lead at home and lost to Buffalo. New York kicker Kaare Vedvik missed an extra point and a 45-yard attempt. He was cut shortly afterward. “We were inept on offense,” Jets coach Adam Gase said. Top Jets linebacker CJ Mosley injured his groin during the drive while breaking up a pass into the end zone. Mosley was really never healthy after that in 2019.
After just one week, starting QB Sam Darnold got diagnosed with mono, and that caused him to miss up to five weeks. The Jets had Trevor Siemian and Luke Falk playing quarterback during Darnold’s absence and both were terrible.
New York would lose its first four games and seven of its first eight. Many thought Gase would be fired at that point even though he was in his first season, but ownership stayed the course. The team did finish the second quite well, closing with a 13-6 win in Buffalo. Jets running back Le’Veon Bell saw promise despite finishing a season in which he failed to top 100 yards rushing.
“We’re starting to get the ship sailing in the right direction. I think we started finding our groove and finding out exactly what our image is going to be,” said Bell.
The Jets improved on their 4-12 record from 2018 but missed the playoffs for the ninth consecutive season.
New York Jets offseason moves
The Jets lost No. 1 receiver in free agency to Carolina but replaced him with Breshad Perriman on a surprisingly cheap $6 million deal for one season. Perriman averaged nearly 18 yards per catch as Tampa’s third wideout last season. In December, the former Ravens first-rounder took advantage of injuries to Mike Evans and Chris Godwin to rack up 506 receiving yards, which was third in the NFL to Tyler Higbee and DeVante Parker over that time frame. Perriman finished the regular season with three consecutive 100-yard games, his first time doing so as a pro. Perriman is a viable deep burner with upside.
Perriman was really the only splash skill position addition. The team did add offensive tackle George Fant on a three-year deal worth up to $30 million and center Connor McGovern on a similar deal. Throughout the 2019 season, one of the biggest weaknesses for the Jets was the offensive line, so rebuilding it was a priority during the offseason for general manager Joe Douglas.
Not one single Week 1 offensive line starter made it through the season without missing significant time. Pro Football Focus rated New York’s offensive line 28th in the NFL last season as the Jets averaged 0.7 yards prior to contact per running play in 2019. They also allowed pressure in 2.5 seconds or less on pass plays 27.5 percent of the time, second-worst in the league.
Fant played for the Seahawks the past four years and will replace Kelvin Beachum, who started at left tackle for the past three season and was allowed to walk in free agency. Last year, Fant made eight starts, including a playoff start against the Eagles. Fant has played both left and right tackle with the Seahawks. The Jets view him as a left tackle who can move to right if they need him to. Pro Football Focus rated him as the 57th tackle out of 81 they graded in 2019.
McGovern spent the last four seasons with Denver. In his first three seasons in the NFL, McGovern has played in 47 of 48 possible regular-season games and started 36 of those. That’s the kind of health the Jets need if they hope to build a consistent offensive line in front of quarterback Sam Darnold.
New York also added linebacker Patrick Onwuasor, formerly of the Ravens. Onwuasor lost his starting job with the Ravens last year but still mustered three sacks to bring his four-year total with Baltimore to 9.5. With both Avery Williamson and Mosley coming off serious injuries, Onwuasor could win a starting job.
