Prior to the start of the season, we look at the rosters of every single team in the NFL and use that to predict how things might go in the coming season. The expectations fort each team can often alter dramatically in the preseason, though, especially if they see a key player or two fall to injury, which seems to happen to a couple of teams every single preseason. On the flipside, we also sometimes see positive roster moves that can fill a perceived hole or weakness.
Given what they have accomplished over the past 10-15 years, the New England Patriots are always considered a favorite to win it all, with that very much being the case again this season. That said, this is a team that was beginning to look a little weak at the WR position, but that may well have changed with the reinstatement of Josh Gordon. It is unclear whether he will see any playing time this week in the preseason game versus the Carolina Panthers. Given the timing of the announcement, it would seem that next week would be the best bet for Gordon.

Why bet on the Carolina Panthers?
This is a bit of a critical season for the Carolina Panthers. It’s easy to forget that this team is not that far removed from a Super Bowl appearance, yet they have made a habit of underwhelming since making it to the championship game a few years back. It was more of the same last season, with Carolina finishing 3rd in the NFC South with a disappointing 7-9 record.
The Panthers have split their opening two games of the preseason, starting out with a solid 23-13 road win in Chicago before falling 27-14 to the Buffalo Bills at home. Sure, we saw little of the expected starts in those games, but it is the unpredictable Panthers of the last couple of seasons who have shown up thus far. The Panthers have been a decent bet in August games, going 4-2 ATS in their last 6.

Why bet on the New England Patriots?
The Patriots will undoubtedly head into the new season as one of the favorites to win the Super Bowl, but that doesn’t mean that this team is free from some doubts. The biggest question that needs to be answered is how they are going to deal with the loss of Rob Gronkowski, as he has been a massive presence for this team over the years.
While Tom Brady has shown no signs of slowing down, he is still 42, and while no-one is questioning him yet, we all know that father Time has a way of arriving very quickly in professional sports. The Patriots have been perfect in preseason, going 2-0 with wins over Detroit and Tennessee, a pair of games that saw New England surrender just 20 total points.
Team Stats (Offense)
- Points per Game: 24.86
- Passing Yards: 256.43
- Rushing Yards: 105.43
