Redskins vs Eagles 2019 NFL Week 1 Odds & Expert Analysis

Written by on September 3, 2019

Thursday night will see the NFL return, with the regular season set to kick off with a primetime match-up between the Green Bay Packers and the Chicago Bears. There is nothing quite like a big rivalry game to get the season rolling, but the meat of the Week 1 schedule comes on Sunday. Every team has now cut their roster down to the required 53 players, which is the point where we look at each squad and try to figure out how they will do this season. There are some obvious favorites who look like legitimate Super Bowl contenders, but there are also some teams who look likely to struggle this coming season.

On Sunday afternoon, we get one team from each of those categories going head to head. The Eagles are just a couple of years removed from a World Series win, and they are in as one of the potential favorites. The same cannot be said for the Washington Commanders, a team that many people view as potentially being one of the worst in the league this year. The Eagles come into the season opener favored by 9 ½, with the point total set at 46.

Why bet on the Washington Redskins?

The Redskins were not having a particularly bad season in 2018, but it all went south when QB Alex Smith was carted off the field with a potentially career-ending injury. At the draft, the Redskins looked to the future by drafting Dwayne Haskins out of Ohio State, but the big man is not quite ready for the NFL spotlight.

That means that it will almost certainly be Case Keenum under center on Sunday. The Redskins appear to have some luck when playing in September, winning 4 of their last 5 in that month, but that luck may run out on Sunday, as they are just 1-4 SU in their last 5 meetings with Philly. They are also just 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games versus NFC East opposition, so not a lot to like here.

Team Stats (Last 10 Games)

  • Score: 23.00
  • Rush Yards: 97.90
  • Pass Attempts: 35.10
  • Completion Percentage: 63.53
  • Passing Yards: 243.10
  • Total Yards: 341.00
  • Turnovers: 1.30

Why bet on the Philadelphia Eagles?

This is going to be an interesting season for the Eagles, who will have QB Carson Wentz ready to go in Week 1. Wentz has been unable to finish the last two seasons, including the Super Bowl year, due to injury. The downside this time around is that Nick Foles is no longer around to bail them out if Wentz goes down again, so it’s probably fair to suggest that the Eagles season hinges on Wentz staying healthy from start to finish.

Redskins vs Eagles should be an easy victory for Philly.

One thing that is constant with this team, though, is how good they are at home, winning 16 of the last 20 in their own building. Overall, they are 11-3 SU versus NFC East opposition and are 4-0-1 ATS in their last 5 games.

  • Total Yards: 373.7

Expert Pick & Final Score Prediction for Redskins vs Eagles

The UNDER has hit in 8 of the last 12 Eagles games and given that the Redskins might struggle on the offensive side of the football, that may be a good pick again in this one. The Eagles have won their last 4 meetings with Washington by an average of more than 15 points, so a straightforward pick here.
