Player Movement and Possible Future Moves
The Tennessee Titans snuck into the playoffs last season with a 9-7 record and a spot in the Wild Card that took them on the road to face the New England Patriots. No-one gave them much of a shot there, but they surprised everyone by getting the win and going on a run that saw them make it all the way to the conference finals. They came up a little short in that one, but it became clear to all that this might well be a team on the brink of something big.
Despite the fact that Ryan Tannehill played a huge role in the success of the Titans last season after taking the starting job from Marcus Mariota, there was still talk that Tennessee be the eventual landing spot for Tom Brady. That talk was quickly put to rest by coach Mike Vrabel, a friend and former teammate of Brady’s, as the Titans inked Tannehill to a lucrative 4-year deal.
Another player that they needed to get signed in a big way was RB Derrick Henry, as he almost single handedly won the opening two games of the postseason last year. The Titans used the franchise tag on Henry, but they may well go back and try to ink him to a long-term deal after getting rid of a ton of salary and creating over $20 million in cap space in the process. Tennessee did make another couple of moves, the first of which was to bring in LB Vic Beasley from the Atlanta Falcons. They also went out and picked up OT Dennis Kelly, who will slid into the spot opened up by the departure of Jack Conklin. It was a money saving deal that should not have a huge impact on that position.
With a ton of cap space still available, you can bet that the Titans are not yet finished shopping, so look for more moves coming from them soon.
