Tennessee beat Houston 20-17 in Week 2. Kicker Ryan Succop’s 31-yard field goal with one minute left was the difference in Mike Vrabel’s first win as a head coach. Blaine Gabbert started at quarterback for the Titans. Marcus Mariota was in uniform and watched the entire game from the sideline with an injury. Gabbert finished the game with 13 completions and 117 yards on 20 attempts with one touchdown and no interceptions. His passer rating of 97.3 was the third-highest rating of his career in games with at least 20 passing attempts.

 

One Titans TD was on a fake punt. Kevin, Byard’s 66-yard touchdown pass to Dane Cruikshank was the longest touchdown pass by a defensive player in the Super Bowl era. The previous record of 18 yards was held by Los Angeles Rams defensive back Ed Meador (November 19, 1967). The defense contained Deshaun Watson, sacking him four times. Defensive lineman Jurrell Casey had two sacks.

The Titans had a two-game winning streak snapped in a big way last week, 38-10 at the Colts. After defensive coordinator Dean Pees was taken to a nearby hospital when medical workers took him out of the press box in a wheelchair during the first quarter, first-year coach Mike Vrabel took over play-calling duties and Andrew Luck shredded the league’s top-ranked defense. Losing starting quarterback Marcus Mariota with a stinger in the final minute of the first half certainly didn’t help.

 

In place of Mariota in the loss, Blaine Gabbert completed 11-of-16 passes for 118 yards, one touchdown, and an interception. The Titans were already losing 24-0 when Mariota left. Gabbert did nothing until the final two minutes when he found Tajae Sharpe in the end zone.

 

Will Mariota play here? That’s the big question. Mariota was back on the practice field on Thursday in a walk-through session, but he was listed as limited on the injury report. Vrabel said the team should have a better idea on his status for Monday’s game against the Texans as the week continues. Mariota appears on the report with a ‘neck’ injury. Mariota said the injury isn’t related to the elbow injury he suffered earlier in the season, although the symptoms are similar. Receiver Taywan Taylor (foot) was back on the practice field. Taylor has missed the past two games.

 

Pees checked out fine and will be back as the defensive coordinator. The Titans are ranked No. 2 in the NFL in scoring defense.

The Texans are the first team since 1970 to win seven consecutive games immediately following a 0-3 start to a season. They won at Washington 23-21 last week. Houston went ahead for good on a 54-yard field goal by Ka’imi Fairbairn, who missed a 44-yarder earlier. The winning streak stayed alive when Redskins kicker Dustin Hopkins missed a 63-yard field-goal attempt with 3 seconds left.

 

Deshaun Watson completed 16-of-24 passes for 208 yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions. The Texans have gone three straight games without committing a turnover, the longest such streak in franchise history. Watson’s fumble was his first since Week 6.

 

Titans vs Texans is a battle for the top of the AFC South.

 

DeAndre Hopkins caught 5-of-6 targets for 56 yards and a touchdown. The Texans completed only 16 passes as a team. Demaryius Thomas was held catch-less in Week 11. He drew one target and has not so much as caught a pass since the first quarter of Week 9 against Denver.

 

Texans coach Bill O’Brien blames himself for Thomas’ slow start since being acquired from the Broncos: “I have to do a better job of getting him more involved. “He’s working hard, he’s a good pro and we need to do a better job of getting him the ball a little more.”

 

Justin Reid had a 101-yard interception-return touchdown in the second quarter vs. Washington. That is tied for the second-longest interception-return touchdown by a rookie in NFL history, trailing only Pete Barnum’s 103-yard return for the Columbus Tigers in the team’s victory over the Canton Bulldogs on September 26, 1926. Reid is the third player in franchise history with a 100+ yard touchdown, joining Andre Davis (104-yard kickoff-return touchdown vs. Jacksonville on December 30, 2007) and Marcus Coleman (102-yard interception-return touchdown at Kansas City on September 26, 2004).
