2020 Stanley Cup proves hockey is most parity filled league
This year’s NHL Playoffs has shown that hockey remains the most parity brimming among the major four sports leagues. The NBA could prove to have some parity if the Lakers don’t win the NBA Finals. If the Dodgers or Yankees don’t win the World Series, we could say that Major League Baseball has parity. The Kansas City Chiefs or Baltimore Ravens would have to lose the Super Bowl to say the NFL has parity.
But even if those things happen, the Dodgers and Yankees, the Lakers, and the Chiefs and Ravens all lose their respective league championships, the National Hockey League would still have more parity overall than the NFL, NBA, or MLB. Think about this year’s NHL Playoffs for why.
In the East, the New York Islanders upset the Philadelphia Flyers after beating the favored Washington Capitals in the first round. The Tampa Bay Lightning upset the Boston Bruins in the second round.
The playoffs have been even more extreme in the West. The Vancouver Canucks beat defending champion St. Louis in the first round as a massive underdog. To make it to the Stanley Cup, the Dallas Stars had to conquer a couple of pre-restart favorites, the Colorado Avalanche and Vegas Golden Knights.
Before the season started, Tampa Bay was the third choice to win the Cup. The Stars were a +2000 or worse choice. Once hockey restarted, Tampa was a third choice behind the Bruins and Golden Knights.
The Stars weren’t even a top five choice. That’s how much parity exists in the National Hockey League.
Lightning and Stars knotted up at a game a piece
Again, even though no fans are in attendance, the two Stanley Cup battles between the Tampa Bay Lightning and Dallas Stars have been crazy intense. Neither team figures to give an inch in this series, which means we could be staring at a 7-game throw down for Lord Stanley’s hardware.
The Stars beat the Lightning 4-1 to take Game 1. The Lightning returned the favor 3-2 to win Game 2. Game 3 is on Wednesday. Expect both the Dallas Stars and Tampa Bay Lightning to give it their all in Game 3.
Although the odds aren’t as ridiculous on the Stanley Cup favorite as they are on the NBA favorite, the Lightning do offer underlay odds at -200. After yielding three goals in the first period, the Stars roared back to make it 3-2 in Game 2.
The comeback fell short, but Dallas showed how they beat both Vegas and Colorado to make it this far. Dallas is versatile enough to give Tampa problems all series long. At +160, they’re an overlay to win the Cup.
Have a great rest of your week!
