Coyotes vs Maple Leafs Season Series
Leafs lead 1-0, winning 3-1 in the desert on Nov. 21. That was the head coaching debut of Toronto’s Sheldon Keefe. Mike Babcock had been fired the day before. Tyson Barrie, rookie Pierre Engvall and Auston Matthews scored for Toronto. Frederik Andersen stopped 30 shots. Vinnie Hinostraza scored with 17 seconds left for Arizona to spoil Andersen’s shutout bid. Darcy Kuemper finished with 29 saves.
Why Bet on Arizona?
Arizona was one point back of a playoff spot entering Monday’s game at Montreal. This is despite the fact that the Coyotes have been in first place in their division at times this season.
The Coyotes have fallen off a cliff for the most part since No. 1 goaltender Darcy Kuemper was hurt as he was in the midst of a career season. Kuemper, who was named an All-Star, ranks fourth in the NHL in goals saved above average. He owns a .929 save percentage and a 2.17 goals against average, ranking in the top 20 of NHL goaltenders in save percentage on high-danger shots.
The hope was that Kuemper was going to return Monday against Montreal, but Kuemper suffered an injury at the team’s skate Monday morning. Thus, he’s probably not playing here, either. Kuemper has been sidelined since Dec. 19 because of a lower-body injury. Likely will be Adin Hill because Antti Raanta started Monday. In his last start, Hill stopped 29 of 32 shots in a 4-2 loss to the Boston Bruins.
The Coyotes have held their opponents to an average of 32.2 shots, which ranks among the Top-10 medians in the league. Keeping opponents’ attempts to the outside in low-percentage areas have been a strength of the Coyotes’ identity this year; they are fourth in the league with a 2.68 GAA.
As of Monday, Arizona’s Carl Sodberberg is one goal shy of 100 for his NHL career, Clayton Keller one assist shy of 100 for his NHL career, Vinnie Hinostroza two points shy of 100 for his NHL career, and Rick Tocchet five wins away for 100 as Coyotes head coach.

Why Bet on Toronto?
The Leafs were 2-1 losers in overtime Saturday in Montreal. Ilya Kovalchuk scored 1:43 into OT. Marco Scandella tied the score late in the third period for the Canadiens. On the game-winner, Jack Campbell made the initial save on Nick Suzuki, but Kovalchuk netted the rebound for his ninth goal of the season.
John Tavares notched his 23rd goal of the season in the loss. Tavares ended up with a plus-1 rating, three shots on goal and two hits in 22:28 of ice time across 22 shifts while winning six of his 13 faceoff attempts (46.2 percent). Tavares has goals in four consecutive games, totaling five goals and seven points during the span, including three power-play goals.
Campbell, recently acquired from the Kings, allowed two goals on 30 shots. Campbell was making back-to-back starts because Frederik Andersen was unavailable due to a neck injury. Andersen was on the ice for Monday’s practice. When coach Sheldon Keefe was asked if Andersen could play against the Coyotes, he said it was a possibility. Keefe is optimistic that Tavares (illness) will be able to play as well. Tavares skipped Monday’s practice because of an illness.
William Nylander (illness) was on the ice for Monday’s practice. Nylander is expected to play Tuesday after missing the last two games due to an illness. He had six goals and five assists during a nine-game point streak prior to being forced out of the lineup. Zach Hyman didn’t take part in Monday’s practice because of bumps and bruises but should play.
Mitch Marner has led the NHL in scoring since December 7 with 39 points. Artemi Panarin of the Rangers is second during that period with 38 points, followed by Marner’s linemate Auston Matthews, who has 37.
