The Favorites

Tampa Bay Lightning

The Lightning hasn’t exactly been on fire lately, but they’re still cruising along with the best record in hockey and still look like the league’s best Stanley Cup favorite to me with an offense that ranks first and a defense that ranks sixth.

Nashville Predators

  • Stanley Cup Odds: 7/1
Don’t look now, but Nashville has picked up the pace in a big way in recent weeks and now has the look of a team really ready to defend the conference crown they won a year ago.

Pittsburgh Penguins

  • Stanley Cup Odds: 7/1
Speaking of teams that have picked it up in recent weeks and the two-time defending Stanley Cup champion Penguins fit the bill. After floundering all season long, Sidney Crosby and company are on fire and now have the look of a team that won’t be dispatched easily – if at all.

Boston Bruins

  • Stanley Cup Odds: 8/1
Jeez, in keeping with the ‘on fire’ thing, no team in hockey is as hot as Boston is right now. The Bruins have won nine of their last 10 at the time of this writing and have the look of a legitimate contender for Pittsburgh’s conference crown at the very least!

Washington Capitals

  • Stanley Cup Odds: 8/1
Alex Ovechkin and the explosive Washington Capitals have let me down in each of the last two postseasons. Can someone please tell me it won’t be three this year? Didn’t think so (sad face emoji)!

Vegas Golden Knights

  • Stanley Cup Odds: 8/1
The expansion Vegas Golden Knights are my favorite team in hockey and they look like they have looked like they can beat any team in the league all season long. Vegas is 19-3-2 at home this season and is offering a ton of value as an 8/1 pick to win it all, seeing as how the Knights rank a stellar second in scoring (3.4 GPG) and ninth in goals allowed (2.7 GPG).

The Contenders

St. Louis Blues / Toronto Maple Leafs

  • Stanley Cup Odds: 12/1
I like St. Louis, but the Blues are currently behind both, Nashville and Winnipeg in the Central Division and I just don’t seem them beating either in the postseason if it comes to that. The same applies to third place Toronto who sits behind both, Boston and Tampa Bay in the Atlantic Division.

New Jersey Devils

  • Stanley Cup Odds: 14/1
Say what? New Jersey is also in the same pickle as they sit in third place in the Metropolitan Division behind both, Pittsburgh and Washington. Things are even worse for Dallas as they sit in fourth place in the Central Division. The Stanley Cup Odds for the Devils are not looking good.

Dallas Stars / Winnipeg Jets

  • Stanley Cup Odds: 16/1
The team that is offering the best value in this group of contenders is the Winnipeg Jets. Not only do they lead the central, but more importantly, they’re elite at both ends of the ice as they rank fifth in scoring (3.2 GPG) and a stellar seventh in goals allowed (2.6 GPG).

Anaheim Ducks / Los Angeles Kings / New York Islanders

  • Stanley Cup Odds: 25/1
San Jose is in second place in the Pacific Division, but the Sharks are giving up more goals per game (2.8) than they are averaging (2.7), so there’s that! There’s no way Anaheim should be offering 25/1 odds, so don’t waste your money on the Ducks, and the same goes for the mediocre New York Islanders. Last but not least, the Los Angeles Kings are ranked second in goals allowed (2.4 GPG) and that alone means they could pull off an upset once the postseason rolls around.

Long Shots

  • Columbus Blue Jackets: 28/1
  • Minnesota Wild: 28/1
  • New York Rangers: 28/1
  • Philadelphia Flyers: 28/1
  • Chicago Blackhawks: 33/1
  • Calgary Flames: 40/1
  • Colorado Avalanche: 40/1
  • Edmonton Oilers: 50/1
  • Carolina Hurricanes: 66/1
  • Florida Panthers: 125/1
  • Vancouver Canucks: 125/1
  • Detroit Red Wings: 150/1
  • Montreal Canadiens: 150/1
  • Ottawa Senators: 500/1
