It’s a whole new world in college football this season, with some massive changes to the conferences, as well as to the playoffs, which will now be expanded to 12 teams.
It is definitely going to be interesting to see how things play out in terms of the postseason, but we are also curious about how teams might adapt to playing in a new conference.
My Analysis
One of the most interesting moves sees the Texas Longhorns and Oklahoma Sooners move from the Big 12 to the SEC, which definitely feels like an upward move.
There are going to be a lot of eyes on both teams this season, but for the purposes of this piece, we are going to focus on the Sooners, so let’s take a look at their odds for the season and how things might play out.

Oklahoma Sooners Regular Season, Conference, and Win Total
This is Year 3 for Sooners head coach, Brent Venables, and it is fair to say that this is likely to be the most challenging of the bunch.
His first season was something of a nightmare, with the Sooners finishing below .500, but he turned things around in 2023, leading his team to a 10-3 season.
Still, this is a fan base that has come to expect conference championships and playoff appearances, so 10 wins is probably still not good enough.
The bookies seem to think that this season might be a struggle, with the Sooners win total set at 7 ½.
Let’s start by talking about the Sooners offense, which has not been much of an issue for quite some time.
They should be fun to watch again this season, but will the wide-open style of offense that they play prove to be a fit for the hard-hitting defenses in the SEC?
Another issues that the Sooners look to have is their front seven, which is basically all new.
If they cannot protect their QB, this could prove to be a very long season indeed.
One of the reasons Brent Venables was hired to replace Lincoln Riley was because of his defense building capabilities.
The defensive unit has improved year-on-year under Venables and should continue to grow this season.
Where they need to improve is in putting pressure on opposing QBs, which they have not been able to do on a consistent basis.
In terms of winning the SEC, the Sooners are sitting in the middle of the pack at odds of +3600.

Oklahoma Sooners Postseason Odds
Given the win total and the odds of making the playoffs, it seems as though the Sooners would need a lot to go right in order for them to be one of the 12 teams making it into the college football playoffs.
Even if they were to somehow successfully navigate the SEC and find their way in, I just don’t see any way in which the Sooners make a deep run or win a National Championship.
Right now, the Sooners are sitting at +7000 to win the Natty, so not a particularly great bet.

2023 Oklahoma Sooners
Over the past few years, we have seen things change rather dramatically in college football, with realignment, NIL money, and the transfer portal all making a big difference in the sport. With further changes coming, including the expansion of the playoffs, things will continue to change. The Oklahoma Sooners will be hoping that their fortunes change this coming season after a dismal 6-7 season in 2022, which was the first year under new head coach Brent Venables, who found that filling the shoes left by Lincoln Riley was not that easy. Coaches often catch a break in their opening season as they look to bring in a new system and the personnel they need to play that way. In their final season in the Big 12, Sooners fans are going to be looking for much more this season, but will they get what they hope for?

The Sooners in 2022
After 6 straight seasons of winning the Big 12 and making several playoff appearances, Lincoln Riley decided to jump ship and head to USC, where he had a very solid first season in charge. The transition did not go so smoothly for the Sooners and new head coach Brent Venables, as they stumbled to a 6-7 record, which included a loss to the Florida State Seminoles in Cheez-It Bowl. They gave up 35 points in that one, which was indicative of their season, with the defense looking more than a little fragile every single week of the season. There were, of course, other issues to contend with across the board, but it was those defensive woes that essentially sunk the Sooners ship before it had a chance to really float. Their 2023 season likely hinges on the ability of the coaching staff to plug those defensive holes.

Betting Odds for the Sooners in 2023
There is a belief that the Big 12 might be a little weaker this season, with 4 new teams – BYU, Cincinnati, Houston, and UCF – coming on before Oklahoma and Texas depart after the season. That may well help the Sooners rebound, as will an almost definite backward step for TCU after their run to the National Championship Game last season. Right now, the Sooners are listed at +325 to win the conference, right behind favorites Texas.
The Sooners are still pretty much loaded on the offensive side of the football, so there should be no issues there. That said, asking your offense to bail you out week after week because the defense can’t hold up is a recipe for disaster, so I am not about to go all in on Oklahoma winning the Big 12 until I see that D in action. The Sooners win total for the season is set at 9 ½, and I would say that taking the OVER here might not be a bad bet at all.
While I certainly believe that Oklahoma has what it takes to win the Big 12, they have, in recent years, always been a team with a loss or 2 waiting to happen, and I don’t believe that has changed. Making it to the playoffs seems like a longshot at the moment, and the bookies seem to agree, listing them at +6400 to win the Natty.
