The current no.3 on the PGA tour, Collin Morikawa, travels to Tokyo, Japan, as the main betting favorite to win gold in the Olympics golf tournament. However, as was the case with any previous Olympic Games, success does not always come to the favorites.
In fact, there have been several underdogs who outshone some of the best players in the past, and the 2020 Tokyo Olympics likely won’t be an exception. Today, we take a look at four names you should keep an eye on as serious candidates to upset the field and secure an Olympic gold medal. Let’s get right to it so you can get ready to bet against their Olympics Golf betting odds.
2020 Tokyo Olympics Golf Betting Analysis Update
2020 Tokyo Olympics – Golf
- When: July 29 – August 1
- Where: Kasumigaseki Country Club
Thomas Detry
Betting previews usually begin with the top betting favorite, but we’re doing things a bit differently here. Thomas Detry enters the 2020 Olympics as one of the outsiders, priced as high as +6600 on some bookmakers.
Although his high odds might make it seem like he stands no chance to compete for medals, that couldn’t be further from the truth. Instead, the high odds make Detry a very appealing pick for bettors.
The Belgian has been in exceptional form and has had international success before, winning the 2018 World Cupo for his nation alongside Thomas Pieters. Detry has since improved significantly and has managed two runner-up finishes in his last five outings.
That includes T2 at the Scottish Open in June, where he placed behind Min Woo Lee. Even though Detry failed to win in Scotland, the tournament had a much stronger field than the Olympics, and if he managed a strong finish there, he should be more than capable of another solid showing in Japan.
Antoine Rozner
If you’re looking for an outsider to bet on, Antoine Rozner is the man for you. He has already won in Dubai and Qatar and seems to be in great shape ahead of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
There might be better and more successful players in the field, but that doesn’t explain why Rozner is priced as high as +9900 on some bookmakers. One thing to consider is that Rozner has never won in a field as strong as this one, but strong competition has never stopped Rozner from showing up.
Kalle Samooja
The »go big or go home« mentality might not be the optimal way of thinking in sports betting, but when it comes to golf, having the guts to pull a trigger on a complete outsider sometimes pays off.
Kalle Samooja is priced as high as +24900 to win gold in Tokyo, which essentially means that bookmakers are giving the 33-year old Finnish golfer little to no chance of succeeding. That, however, doesn’t make much sense for this type of tournament.
As noted, the Olympics often produce surprise winners, which isn’t too shocking. Playing for yourself or for your country are two entirely different things, and for some, representing their flag means much more than winning a multi-million tournament.
Motivation is often overlooked, but it’s an element that is the driving force being those upset wins.
Samooja has already won a tournament in Asia – Challenge Tour in China in 2018. He has made it to the finals of the 2020 Cyprus Open and has shown decent form in 2021. Of late, he was a bit iffy, but if he can improve his putting, Samooja could be in a race for a strong finish.
