Gerwyn Price Bidding To Continue Winning Streak
There is little doubt that Welsh star Gerwyn Price will be among the key contenders this weekend as the former world champion bids for a third straight success on the Players Championship.
He was at his dominant best in Hildesheim over the past weekend, as he cruised to success at the Players Championship 18 after defeating Gian van Veen 8-1 in a thrilling final.
It was a perfect weekend for one of the world’s top players after he had beaten Josh Rock on Saturday’s showpiece event at Halle 39.
Given his excellent recent form, it could be once again challenging to overlook the Welshman when it comes to the standout player for glory in the United Kingdom this weekend.
Van Veen Could Get Back On Track
Price admitted in his post-match interview that he believes Van Veen is one of the standout young players on the international tour at present, and the Dutchman was excellent throughout the Players Championship 19 to reach the final.
He overcame some testing opponents to reach the final and was at his best in the semi-final stage to power to a 7-1 victory over Joe Cullen.
He has been knocking on the door for a major victory at the top level throughout this year, and there would be few surprises to see him once again reach at least the last four this weekend.
Stephen Bunting Could Be A Value Play
Stephen Bunting is one of the most popular players on the darts circuit, and he appeared to be getting back to somewhere near his best at the Players Championship 19.
The English player reached the semi-finals before falling to Price, but the signs throughout the tournament were incredibly promising.
Bunting is still ranked as the 24th-best player in the world, and he is steadily rising back through the rankings in recent months.
The 38-year-old will be a welcome winner of the event this weekend as he looks to scale the heights that he did between 2012 and 2014, which saw him land the World Masters on two occasions and the World Championship.
Simon Whitlock Hoping To Bounce Back
Simon Whitlock was one of the stars who underdelivered at the Players Championship 18, as he could only reach the last 32 before dropping out of the competition. There will be pressure on the player to bounce back to form this weekend in Barnsley.
The 54-year-old is still regarded as one of the best players to come out of Australia, but he hasn’t won a major event on the PDC calendar since winning the European Championship in 2012.
However, there have been glimmers of his best form over the last 12 months, which included a run to the quarterfinals of the Masters in 2022.
