International Tests
Looking first at international rugby union, two big Test matches loom this weekend, concluding what has been an exciting end-of-year Test window.
Wales and Australia meet at 11:15 AM ET in Cardiff, with both sides desperate to end their season on a win. Both teams have had forgettable seasons and sit in ninth and eighth, respectively, in the world rankings.
Wales is coming off a horror loss to Georgia at home last week, while Australia improved in their 13-10 loss to Ireland, but will still be looking to shake off their own horror loss, to Italy ten days ago.
The other big Test match of the weekend is England vs. South Africa. England comes into this one off the back of a bizarre match against the All Blacks, where they were dominated for 70 minutes, then scored three late tries to claim a draw.
South Africa, meanwhile, has had a tough tour, losing two tight games to Ireland and France before running away with last weekend’s match against Italy. Again, both will be eager to end their seasons with a win.
Bookies favor the home sides this weekend, with Wales the -138 favorite over Australia and England at -188 against South Africa.
Premiership Rugby
Over in English Premiership rugby, there are four matches to play this weekend.
Harlequins vs. Gloucester looks to be the pick of the four games, with the Quins in fourth place trying to catch the rest of the pack and Gloucester in fifth place attempting to pass Harlequins.
The last round saw the Harlequins soundly beaten by Sale, while Gloucester won a tight, high-scoring affair against Bristol.
Bookies have the Harlequins as moderate favorites here, playing at home, with a moneyline of -275 for them to get a result over Gloucester on the weekend.
Top 14 Rugby
Rounding out the weekend, France’s Top 14 competition also sees plenty of action unfolding.
Of the seven matches being played, the weekend’s final game is one to keep an eye on. Competition leaders Toulouse travel to Lyon to take on the fifth-placed side on the ladder.
Lyon will be playing at home in front of a supportive crowd and are well rested after the international break. They also have the momentum of having won their last game before the break, while Toulouse is entering this match off the back of a loss, a draw, and a three-week break.
If there’s ever a time for fifth-placed Lyon to cause an upset, then it’s this weekend. Bookies have them as dead even in the odds, at -110 each way.
I have read enough, I need to place my bet now. What to do?
