AFL Preliminary 2020 Finals Expert Analysis

Written by on October 15, 2020

With only four teams remaining in the race to claim the 2020 AFL championship, it’s time to find to look at both preliminary finals matchups and the four teams still standing. On Friday night, league-leading Port Adelaide will look to take another step toward winning it all when they host Richmond in a battle of top three teams. One day later, second place Brisbane will look to take care of business at home against visiting Geelong. Let’s take a closer look at the upcoming matches so you can bet on their AFL odds.

AFL Preliminary Finals Predictions & Betting Analysis

Port Adelaide Power Vs Richmond Tigers

  • When: Friday, Oct. 16 at 3:50 AM
  • Where: Adelaide Oval

Port Adelaide went 14-3 to finish the regular season atop the AFL ladder. The Power overwhelmed Geelong 58-42 in its qualifying opener on October 1. Richmond went 12-4-1 to finish the regular season in third place while dominating St Kilda in its 80-49 semifinal win on Friday. Port Adelaide has won six straight matches with each win coming by double digits while Richmond has dropped two of their last five matches. Port Adelaide also took down the Tigers 93-72 the last time they met on August 8.

Prediction

While the defending champs are looking to make their fourth straight appearance in the Grand Finals and have a big edge in experience, I like Port Adelaide to take care of business at home to advance in a thriller!

Pick: Port Adelaide 82 Richmond 74

Brisbane Lions Vs Geelong Cats

  • When: Saturday, Oct. 17, 2020 at 3:40 AM
  • Where: Gabba, Brisbane

Brisbane went 14-3 during the regular season to finish second in the AFL ladder to Port Adelaide. Now, the Lions are riding the wave of an eight-game winning streak that includes a convincing 69-54 smackdown of Richmond in their Qualifying clash on October 2. The Lions have gone an unblemished 10-0 in their last 10 games when limiting their opponents to 47 points or less, including seven times this past season.

Geelong went 12-5 to finish fourth in the AFL ladder. The Cats scored more points than any team in the AFL this season and come into this affair fresh off a stunning 100-32 blowout win over Collingwood on Saturday. Geelong has won two straight and eight of their last 10 despite being handed a humbling 58-42 loss against Port Adelaide  in their Qualifying clash on October 1.

Prediction

While I’m expecting Geelong to put up a massive fight in this affair, I’m going to back Brisbane to extend their impressive winning ways by taking care of business at home in this affair. The Lions have gone a pristine 4-0 in their last four Preliminary Finals, although their last appearance came way back in 2004. While Geelong is the statistically better team on both sides of the ball and recorded a surprising 73-46 home win in July, Brisbane has been super consistent in winning eight straight and I believe that very same consistency will help them get the huge win in this matchup.

Pick: Brisbane 75 Geelong 68
