England vs. Panama

• When: Sunday, 8 AM ET
• Where: Nizhny Novgorod Stadium, Nizhny Novgorod, Russia

England came to Russia with lowered expectations given that they have gone with a younger squad this time around. They looked very good in the early going against Tunisia and were full value for their Harry Kane goal inside 15 minutes. They could not maintain that pressure, though, and allowed the Tunisians back into the game, going in tied 1-1 at the half. The second half of that one was a rather drab affair with few chances created at either end. It looked a though the game was going to end in a tie, it was that man Harry Kane again who popped up with the late winner. England now head into the game against Panama with a shot at winning and moving on. Panama did not offer much of a threat in a 3-0 loss to Belgium, and I think we can expect more of the same here.

By the time this day is over, one of these teams will be sitting proudly atop Group H, and one of them may even have done enough to move on to the knockout stage. Japan was surprising 2-1 winners over Colombia, but they did have the benefit of playing against 10 men for the vast majority of the game after Colombia had a man sent off inside 5 minutes. Japan had moments where they struggled to take advantage of playing with the extra man, but they will not be concerned with that now. Senegal took advantage of a rather odd refereeing decision to go 2-0 up against Poland in their opener, and while they did end up conceding one late on, it’s fair to suggest that Senegal deserved to pick up the full 3 points. I think they will get 3 more here, as I like them to get the win.

It’s do or die time for both of these teams, as they both come into this game having lost their opener. The expectation was that these two would top the group and move on, but at least one of them is probably going to miss out. The good news for Colombia ahead of this one is that they should have James Rodriguez fit and ready to go for the full game here. He came on late on the loss to Japan in the opener and was not really in a position to make any sort of impact on the game. The Poles will need to tighten up defensively, as Senegal got behind them on numerous occasions in their 2-1 loss. This should be a close one, but I like Colombia to edge it.
