2018 World Cup Betting Review of Day 14 Action

Written by on June 28, 2018

The second last day of the group stage proved to be about as dramatic as it gets, with Group E and Group F coming to a bit of an unexpected close. Group E had MyBookie Sportsbook favorites Brazil looking to claim the top spot but also knowing that a loss would send them crashing out of the tournament. Things were even more complicated in Group F, where all 4 teams, including the defending World Champions, had a shot at going through. It was a wild day of football that did not go as many expected.

2018 World Cup Betting Review of Day 14 Action

Mexico 0 – 3 Sweden

  • Attempts: Mexico 19 / Sweden 13
  • On-Target: Mexico 3 / Sweden 5
  • Off-Target: Mexico 8 / Sweden 7
  • Blocked: Mexico 8 / Sweden 1
  • Woodwork: Mexico 0 / Sweden 0
  • Corners: Mexico 7 / Sweden 3
  • Offsides: Mexico 2 / Sweden 0
  • Ball Possession: Mexico 65 / Sweden 35
Mexico had looked good in their opening two games, leading many fans to have them as a dark horse pick. Despite those wins, Mexico still needed a point to ensure qualification. The Mexicans looked nervous from the start and could easily have been a goal or two down early had it not been for the heroics of Ochoa in goal. Sweden eventually got the breakthrough they needed, though, and they never looked back after that, cruising to a 3-0 win as the +230 underdog. Sweden also easily covered as the dog, and the goal total went OVER.

South Korea 2 – 0 Germany

  • Attempts: South Korea 11 / Germany 26
  • On-Target: South Korea 5 / Germany 6
  • Off-Target: South Korea 5 / Germany 11

  • Corners: South Korea 3 / Germany 9
  • Offsides: South Korea 0 / Germany 1
  • Ball Possession: South Korea 30 / Germany 70
With the Group F games going off simultaneously, Germany would have been well aware that a win would put them through and knock Mexico out. The champions had their chances, with perhaps the best coming inside the last 5 minutes when Hummels totally messed up a free header inside the 6-yard box. He was made to pay for that miss, as the Koreans scored a goal that was finally allowed after a VAR review. Germany was forced to launch everyone into the attack and were made to pay in injury time when the Korean scored on the break with Manuela Neuer out of his net and up in the attack. The Koreans won at odds of +1500, covering in the process. The goal total went UNDER.

  • Ball Possession: Serbia 44 / Brazil 56
This game may very well have served as the perfect example of what this Brazil team is all about. This is a group that is a lot tighter defensively than previous versions, but who still have that killer punch when going forward. An even first half was finally broke open when Paulinho scored for Brazil, somewhat against the run of play. Brasil remains as one of the 2018 World Cup Betting favorites to win it all. Serbia had a solid spell of play in the second half, missing a couple of good chances during that period. Brazil showed how important it is to be clinical in from of goal by nabbing a second from a set piece. Brazil won as the favorites and covered, at odds of -199. The goal total in this one went UNDER.

Switzerland 2 – 2 Costa Rica

  • Attempts: Switzerland 12 / Costa Rica 14
  • On-Target: Switzerland 3 / Costa Rica 6
  • Off-Target: Switzerland 5 / Costa Rica 6

  • Offsides: Switzerland 1 / Costa Rica 1
  • Ball Possession: Switzerland 60 / Costa Rica 40
This was one of the more entertaining games of the tournament thus far and was perhaps a lot more open than the Swiss would have hoped for. Costa Rica had the better of the first half but was held out by a combination of the woodwork and great goalkeeping. The Swiss stole the lead on the half-hour mark, which must have felt like a dagger to the heart of Los Ticos. To their credit, Costa Rica continued to battle in the second half, coming from behind twice to earn the draw. The draw paid out at odds of +269. Costa Rica covered the spread, and we went OVER in this one.
