2019-20 Ligue 1 Odds to Win & Analysis

Written by on August 8, 2019

It’s a huge weekend coming up in the world of soccer, with many of the major European domestic leagues swinging back into action. The English Premier League starts a day earlier than most, with a single game set to go on Friday. Elsewhere, it is Saturday where we will be seeing the majority of the action, which includes the return of Ligue 1 in France.

The biggest question here is whether any team has what it takes to topple PSG, who won Ligue 1 last season in an absolute stroll. If you do like PSG to repeat, then get your bets in now, as their odds are not going to get any better than they are now. Let’s take a closer look at Ligue 1 Betting favorites, with some predictions made as we go.

  • Marseille 30/1
  • Lille 40/1

Who Can Challenge PSG?

The simple and honest answer to that question is that no team can challenge PSG, at least not in Ligue 1. They won the league by a ridiculously comfortable 16 points last season, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t any pressure to perform again. That said, most of the pressure on this team is in the Champions League. A lot of money was spent to bring in guys like Neymar and Kylian Mbappe, all with the goal of European glory.

This team has repeatedly stumbled in the Champions League, with Ligue 1 viewed by many as a bit of a consolation prize. Neymar is not a happy lad right now, and if things go wrong in CL play, it could have a ripple effect that hurts them in the league, although it should still be a comfortable win.

Last season, Lille proved to be the surprise package in the league, finishing second behind PSG. The chances of them having a similar type of season this time around seem rather slim, especially since they shipped out Nicolas Pepe to Arsenal in a big-money transfer. He finished second in Ligue 1 last season in combined goals and assists, so there are some big shoes to fill there.

Another surprise last season was the performance of Monaco, who finished just above the drop zone. It was a season that cost Leonardo Jardim his job, but 3 months later, he is back in the hot seat and in charge at Monaco once more. They are the team most likely to make the biggest jump this season and are a decent top 3 bet, but they are still well off the pace needed to catch PSG.

Ligue 1 Best Bets

While the odds are not particularly great, taking PSG to win Ligue 1 is perhaps the closest thing you will get to free money. Yes, they have some internal issues, but they are also still the class of this league, with no serious contender emerging.

If you are looking for a good top 3 bet, then I would suggest taking a look at St. Etienne. They are not always the most exciting team to watch, but they are a rock in defense and should score just enough to land in the top 3. In fact, I have them finishing second, just ahead of Monaco. In the relegation zone, I think we are looking at Amiens as the best bet to finish dead last in Ligue 1 this season.
