Since July 2, Haiti has played great soccer. The Haitians blasted Saint Vincent and the Grenadines 6-1 in a CONCACAF Gold Cup Qualifying match on the second day in July. Then on July 6, Haiti dominated Bermuda 4-1 in a Gold Cup qualifier. The 1-0 loss to the U.S. in their first Gold Cup match was also inspiring. The Haitians played the United States a few days after Prime Minister Jovenel Moise’s assassination. Also, USA was a -2 ½ favorite on the handicap.

Haiti could produce another great performance against Canada. But the Canadians have shown they have what it takes to win the tournament. In their first CONCACAF Gold Cup match, Canada rolled, beating Martinique 4-1. In a couple of World Cup qualifiers, Canada beat Haiti 1-0 and 3-0.

The question in this is whether Canada can beat Haiti by at least 2 goals. The answer is yes. Not because Haiti shouldn’t win on the handicap, but because the Canadians offer better odds. In a match with close spread odds, it makes sense to back the team with the largest potential payout.

On July 11, Martinique played their first match as a nation since Nov. 14, 2019. It wasn’t pretty. Canada dusted Martinique 4-1. On July 15, Martinique must take on the United States, arguably the team to beat at the CONCACAF Gold Cup.

USA played well when defeating Haiti 1-0. They should beat Martinique by more than a goal. Even though Martinique offers much better odds, +200, and gets 2 ½ goals in this, the underdog is horribly overmatched.

Ah, but this is a much different USA squad than the one that beat Mexico to win the Nations League title. Gio Reyna, Chelsea player Christian Pulisic, and West McKennie aren’t playing in the Gold Cup.

The reason? They had to fly back to Europe to ready for the upcoming club season. The United States still has a shot to win the Gold Cup, no doubt, but they’re not nearly as strong as they would be with Pulisic, Reyna, and McKennie.

USA will win. Covering a 2 ½ goal handicap doesn’t seem likely.
