Gold Cup Group Stage Matches

  • When: Wednesday, July 14

El Salvador -114 vs Trinidad and Tobago +340

  • When: Wednesday, July 14

After their first matches, it’s difficult not to call El Salvador and Trinidad and Tobago two of the hottest squads at the CONCACAF Gold Cup. Let’s start with El Salvador, who looked fantastic dominating Guatemala in their first match.

El Salvador didn’t allow Guatemala to catch their breath. The El Salvadoreans controlled possession 69% to 31%. But El Salvador took their time.

They didn’t knock in their first goal until minute 81. The second goal happened 6 minutes into extra time. Although they didn’t score until late, El Salvador showed they can be patient and wear down an inferior squad.

As a +2 ½ underdog on the handicap in their first Gold Cup match, Trinidad and Tobago held Mexico to 0 goals in a 0-0 draw. Trinidad didn’t even try to gain possession. The Mexicans held the ball 82% of the time and took 30 shots on goal, 7 of the shots were on target.

Trinidad and Tobago will play another conservative match. Like what they did to Guatemala, El Salvador should eventually wear down Trinidad for at least one goal in regulation.

Soccer Pick: El Salvador

Mexico -2 ½ (-153) vs Guatemala +2 ½ (+116)

  • When: Wednesday, July 14

Hats off to Guatemala, which played an excellent match against El Salvador. Guatemala’s strategy, one Trinidad and Tobago pulled off against the Mexicans, of sitting back and playing defense almost worked to a draw.

El Salvador scored their first goal with less than 10 minutes left on the clock. The Salvadoreans’ scored their second goal with a minute left in extra time. If Guatemala had held on, they would have forced a draw.

With that being written, Mexico should swarm the Guatemalans in this match. Mexico took 30 shots on goal, 7 of which were on target. Trinidad and Tobago had luck on their side. Versus Guatemala, some of those shots will get past Guatemala goal keeper Nicholas Hagen.

Mexico’s frontline of Funes Mori, Lozano, and Corona should have no trouble scoring at least three goals on Guatemala. Even though Mexico couldn’t get a single ball past Trinidad and Tobago, they figure to make up the lack of scoring versus the Guatemalans. Mexico on the handicap is the play.

Soccer Pick: Mexico
