Chelsea vs Arsenal Last Meeting

The teams met on Dec. 29 with Chelsea winning 2-1. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang gave the hosts the lead in the 13th minute but Jorginho equalized in the 83rd minute.

Four minutes later, Tammy Abraham scored the winner when he drilled through Leno’s legs. “I give credit to Jorginho,” Chelsea striker Abraham said. “In the first 30 minutes they dominated the ball… then this man [Jorginho] comes on and it’s a whole different ball game. Him coming on lifted us as a team.” That match was Mikel Arteta’s home debut as coach of the Gunners.

Why Bet on Chelsea?

The Blues come off a 1-0 loss to Newcastle United on Saturday. Isaac Hayden won it in stoppage time. Frank Lampard’s side were unable to build on last week’s emphatic 3-0 victory over Burnley, instead recording their eighth defeat of the season.

Chelsea right-back Reece James was his side’s most potent creative threat in the first half, with the 20-year-old defender delivering a significant number of crosses into the Newcastle penalty area, although few led to meaningful chances. James was substituted on 74 minutes after twice going down injured.

Chelsea remain without American winger Christian Pulisic, who is targeting a return within the “next couple of weeks” as he steps up his recovery from injury. Lampard has been reluctant to give any indication on how long Pulisic could be sidelined. “It’s been almost a week, and I’m just kind of taking it day-by-day,” Pulisic said. “I’m just rehabbing every day. I’m doing my best to be back in the next week, the next couple [of] weeks. I don’t think it should be too long, so I’m just working every day, doing everything I can to be back on the pitch.”

Help is on the Way

Chelsea have opened negotiations to sign Leipzig striker and German international Timo Werner, but Liverpool are preparing to make a summer move for his services as well. Werner has already expressed a desire to play in the Premier League, although it is still likely that Leipzig, who have a great chance of ending the season as Bundesliga champions, will attempt to keep Werner until the summer.

Reece James is a doubt for this match after picking up a knee injury during the defeat at Newcastle on Saturday. The youngster will be given a late fitness test but Lampard is unlikely to take any risks so Cesar Azpilicueta could move to right-back with Emerson Palmeiri recalled at left-back.

Lampard spoke about needing to score more goals, and one of those going through a drought is Mason Mount, which would mean he could be on the bench.

  • 17-M. Kovačić

Why Bet on Arsenal?

Since Mikel Arteta took over as manager in December, the Gunners have played four Premier League matches and won just one of them. They drew with Sheffield United 1-1 on Saturday. Arteta’s side had been hoping to build on an encouraging New Year’s Day home win over Manchester United but they were left frustrated again.

Both sides came out of the block quickly but it was Arsenal who would have the better of the chances. Alexandre Lacazette played Pepe in for a wonderful chance in the 13th minute, but Pepe’s finishing woes would continue. It would go back and forth, but right before the half, the Gunners would find a breakthrough. A pass from Lacazette would find Buyako Saka who released Gabriel Martinelli at the perfect time to put Arsenal up 1-0 right before the half.

New Blood

The 18-year-old Martinelli was starting in place of suspended frontman Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who has scored 47% of Arsenal’s league goals this season and his absence blunted the attack, although Martinelli, in only his fourth league start, impressed. Aubameyang on Tuesday sits out the second clash of a three-match suspension.

Chelsea vs Arsenal is going to be a good one.

The four shots on goal against Sheffield were simply not enough. Against a vulnerable Chelsea defense, can Arsenal get it going in attack?

A lot of names have already been linked with a move to the Emirates Stadium during the midseason transfer window, many of which are defenders given the club’s issues at the back. Arsenal have agreed a deal with Paris Saint-Germain defender Layvin Kurzawa with a five-year contract approved. The 27-year-old is out of contract in the French capital at the end of the season and will move to the Emirates Stadium on a free transfer, having been free to discuss a pre-contractual agreement with clubs outside of France this month. Arsenal will push to sign Jerome Boateng from Bayern Munich this month but that will not stop their pursuit of Dayot Upamecano this summer.

Expected Line-up

  • 1-B. Leno
  • 18-Nacho Monreal
  • 23-David Luiz
  • 5-S. Papastathopoulos
  • 34-G. Xhaka
  • 15-A. Maitland-Niles
  • 8-Dani Ceballos
  • 28-J. Willock
  • 29-M. Guendouzi
  • 14-P. Aubameyang
  • 19-N. Pépé
