The MLS regular season drew to a close on Decision Day Sunday, and there will be barely time to draw a breath for Soccer lines fans before the playoff games get underway in midweek. We now know who is in and who is out, and which teams will have to win another game before making it to the conference semi-finals. Alright online betting aficionados, let’s start off by taking a look at how the Eastern Conference went down.
Wednesday night will see DC United play host to the New England Revolution. DC are going to have to find a way to pick up the pieces after being torn apart in Columbus on Sunday, where they lost the opportunity to get an automatic bye into the semis. The Revolution finished the season on a bit of a high, and were full value for their 3-1 win on the road versus New York City. It’s never easy to go on the road for a one game playoff, but they have to feel as though they can get the win in the nation’s capital.
The other semi-final will be an all Canadian affair, as Toronto FC will have to make the short trip to Montreal to face the Impact on Thursday night. It could well have been the other way around, but Montreal picked up the third seed by knocking off Toronto in the final game of the season. Didier Drogba scored twice in the space of a minute to secure the win.
Those are the first round match-ups for the Eastern Conference playoffs in the MLS. The match-up between DC and New England has all the makings of a coin flip game, as there was very little between those two teams in the regular season. The Montreal/Toronto game loks like being a great one, especially if it can match the intensity of the game they played on Sunday. Montreal have looked like a totally different team with Drogba in the line-up, and may be the team to watch in the East. A big round of applause has to go to the New York Red Bulls, as they won the Supporter’s Shield for the best record in the league, narrowly edging out FC Dallas on goal difference. They will land the top seed in the east, and will be joined in the Easter Conference semi-finals by the Columbus Crew, who looked very impressive with a 5-0 closing day win over DC United. Either one of those teams could be the one that represents the East, but they will have some tough competition to beat in order to get there.
