Matchday 28: Saturday, August 24th, 2024

Betting MLS this Season

Major League Soccer returns to an almost full schedule on Saturday.

Columbus takes on LAFC for the Leagues Cup Final and Philadelphia and Colorado throw down for third place.

So those four teams won’t play on Saturday.

All other MLS teams are in action.

Check out soccer odds, analysis, and picks for six of this Saturday’s top Major League Soccer matchups.

Writer’s Picks for Top Games in Matchday 28

Seattle Sounders +157 vs Minnesota United +154

Before the embarrassing 0-3 loss to LAFC in the Leagues Cup, Seattle had been playing great.

The Sounders dusted the LA Galaxy 3-1 and Pumas UNAM 4-0.

The win over Pumas can’t be ignored because Pumas is a decent Mexican Liga team.

These two played on July 26.

Seattle won that match 2-0 but this game happens in Minnesota.

Minny U heads into this off a 1-0 victory against Necaxa.

Give the home team the nod.

MLS Pick: Minnesota United

New York Red Bulls +187 vs Charlotte FC +135

The Red Bulls, the road team in this game, aren’t playing great soccer.

NYRB is on a 2-match losing streak after falling to Toronto FC and Pachuca via penalty kicks in a couple of Leagues Cup games.

Charlotte FC beat Cruz Azul via penalty kicks in their last.

Charlotte hung with a good Mexican Liga squad in Cruz Azul.

Beating the Red Bulls on their pitch shouldn’t be an issue.

MLS Pick: Charlotte FC

FC Cincinnati +218 vs Inter Miami FC +108

Cincinnati versus Inter should be a fantastic matchup.

FC Cincinnati looked to be on their way to the Leagues Cup Semifinals after winning three straight in the tournament.

But Philadelphia Union got the 4-2 upset win.

Miami lost to Columbus in their last game.

Columbus, the defending 2023 MLS Cup champs, play LAFC in the Leagues Cup Final on Sunday.

The game happens at Chase Stadium in Ft.Lauderdale.

So Miami has a big edge. Messi and his mates prevail.

MLS Pick: Inter Miami FC

Austin FC +222 vs Nashville SC +109

Nashville is the favorite, but Austin has much more going for them.

Although they’re the road team, Nashville has proven they can lose no matter where they play.

The +109 favorite is on a 5-match losing streak.

Austin has won 2-of-5.

The road team offers incredible odds to add to Nashville’s misery.

Back Austin FC at the great +222 odds.

MLS Pick: Austin FC

Orlando City SC +158 vs Sporting Kansas City +146

Home side Kansas City has a single win, a 2-1 victory over Chicago Fire, in their last 5.

KC hasn’t played great and it should haunt them on Saturday.

Orlando City had won 3-of-5 with a draw before losing to Cruz Azul via penalty kicks in their last.

Orlando can get it done.

MLS Pick: Orlando City SC

LA Galaxy -136 vs Atlanta United +300

The chalk should win this.

Atlanta United has lost 2 straight versus okay but not great squads in Santos and D.C. United.

Overall, ATL United has lost 11 MLS matches this season.

The Galaxy were on a 4-match winning streak before falling to the Sounders in Seattle in their last.

LA should bounce back from the loss and are a decent play at the -136 moneyline odds.

MLS Pick: LA Galaxy

MLS Matchday 28: August 26th – August 27th, 2023
14 Games Total

New York Red Bulls vs. Inter Miami

Saturday, August 26, 2023 at 7:30 PM
Red Bull Arena, Harrison, New Jersey

The team from South Beach has gotten a major boost in cup play from having Lionel Messi join the roster. The question for Inter Miami is whether the presence of the Argentinian star will be enough for them to make up a 14-point deficit to sneak into the Eastern Conference playoffs. Playing on the road will be a good test of Inter Miami’s staying power.

The Red Bulls haven’t been the most exciting team to watch. New York is still on the outside looking in and has played a boring brand of soccer. The Red Bulls have only pocketed 23 goals in 24 MLS games. Eight of New York’s games have ended in draws.

The Red Bulls are +160 on the three-way moneyline, Inter Miami is +170, and the game to end in a draw is +255. The over/under is set at 2.5 goals.

Atlanta United vs. Nashville SC

Saturday, August 26, 2023 at 7:30 PM
Mercedes-Benz Stadium, Atlanta, Georgia

The Five Stripes returned with authority last week. Atlanta saw Greek attacker Giorgos Gaikoumakis return in style, pocketing two goals to help Atlanta blank Seattle. The Five Stripes are seventh in the MLS standings but are only two points out of being in third. However, a few of the teams above them have games in hand.

Nashville is tied with Atlanta in the standings for total points and is looking to play its first MLS game since the break for the Leagues Cup. The Boys in Gold have been excellent in MLS play with defense.

Nashville has only allowed 22 goals in 24 games. Atlanta is +117 on the three-way moneyline, Nashville is +225, and the game to end in a draw is +265.

The over/under has been set at 2.5.

Charlotte FC at Los Angeles FC

Saturday, August 26, 2023 at 7:30 PM
Bank of America Stadium, Charlotte, North Carolina

Charlotte FC has found that Year 2 in the MLS hasn’t been much easier than Year 1. Charlotte has a -10 goal differential and is sitting a decent margin outside of the playoff spot. With other teams adding reinforcements, it could be a difficult second half of the season for Charlotte.

Charlotte has conceded 40 goals in 23 league games thus far. LAFC, the defending MLS Cup champions, looks like it may be finally rounding into form. The Black-and-Gold demolished Colorado 4-0 to open the back half of MLS play. LAFC doesn’t quite have the scoring magic it had last season but has been effective, pocketing 38 goals in 24 games. The Black and Gold are strong on defense, only allowing 25 goals.

LAFC is +!40 on the three-way moneyline, Charlotte is +188, and the game is +255 to end in a draw. The over/under is set at 2.5 goals.

Top 2021 MLS Matches to Bet On the Weekend: Rivalry Week

Previous Betting News

Following Wednesday’s All-Star Game between the MLS All-Stars and the Liga MX All-Stars, the second half of the MLS season gets underway this weekend with a compelling three days of action. Let’s take a quick peek at some of the best games on the MLS schedule this weekend so you get all set to bet against the MLS odds.

Top MLS Games to Watch and Wager On the Weekend (August 27th – 29th)

Toronto FC (+275) vs CF Montreal (-114)

Despite Toronto being last in the Eastern Conference standings, the 401 Derby will still be a fascinating rivalry matchup to kick off the weekend on Friday night. Toronto is winless in six straight matches but has too much talent to be as bad as they’ve been. It’s not as if Montreal has been lighting it up either, winning just once in eight matches, making both teams desperate to walk away with three points.

Nashville SC (+225) vs Atlanta United (+115)

Southern rivals will collide on Saturday afternoon with Nashville facing Atlanta in what should be a tight game. Atlanta’s Moneyline is set at +113 while Nashville has a Moneyline of +225. Nashville is pushing toward a playoff spot this year, although they’ve settled for a draw and just one win over their last five matches. Plus, while Atlanta is just five points back, they’ve also won four in a row heading into the all-star break and will be hoping to keep it going in this budding rivalry.

Los Angeles Galaxy (+380) vs Los Angeles FC (-169)

Even with lopsided betting odds, El Trafico is a key highlight of this week’s MLS schedule. LAFC is a heavy favorite at -172 because of the team’s talent, although Bob Bradley’s squad has lost four in a row and is winless in its last seven league matches.

Needless to say, that’s a big concern heading into a fierce rivalry game. Keep in mind that the Galaxy is fourth in the Western Conference and within striking distance of second-place despite winning just one of four matches before the break.

FC Dallas (+225) vs Austin FC (+113)

Both teams may be at the bottom of the Western Conference standings, but emotions are bound to be high in this matchup of two Texas rivals. Dallas knocked off Austin 2-0 earlier this month, but now Austin will get a chance to return the favor on their home field.

In fact, Austin is a slight favorite at +113 while Dallas has a Moneyline of +225. It’s been a rough first inaugural season for Josh Wolff’s team. But Austin did beat in-state rival Houston earlier this month and is coming off a 3-1 win over Portland. That should fill them with confidence against a Dallas team that’s winless in three straight matches.

Portland Timbers (+390) vs Seattle Sounders (-166)

The weekend concludes on Sunday night with another rivalry game. The Sounders head into the Cascadia Cup as sizable favorites with a -166 Moneyline whereas Portland has a +390 Moneyline. Seattle isn’t quite running away with the Western Conference, but they are comfortably in the first place.

The Sounders also dominated Portland in a 6-2 earlier this month amidst their current run of four straight wins across all competitions. The task on Sunday will be monumental for the Timbers, who are currently outside of a playoff spot and are coming off a disappointing 3-1 loss to Austin in their last match.

Previous Betting News

One day after Portland claimed the MLS is Back championship title, the 2020 MLS season will resume with FC Dallas hosting visiting Nashville SC on Wednesday at Toyota Stadium in Frisco, Texas. After being left out of the MLS Is Back tournament due to a high number of COVID-19 cases on their respective rosters, both teams will be looking to kick off their ‘new’ seasons with a confidence-boosting victory. With that said, let’s find out which team is offering the best betting value against their MLS odds.

MLS 2020 Regular Season Resumes – FC Dallas Vs Nashville SC

Why Bet On FC Dallas

FC Dallas kicked off their 2020 campaign with a 2-0 win over Philadelphia on Feb. 29 before playing Montreal to a 2-2 draw on March 7. This is a team that was expected to be legitimate contenders to win the MLS is Back Tournament before they were forced to withdraw due to a handful of positive COVID tests.

Still, Dallas is brimming with young talent, starting with superstar striker Franco Jara, who scored an impressive 66 goals in 139 games for Liga MX’s Pachuca from 2015-2020. Now, heading into their first match in months, head coach Luchi Gonzalez kept his message to his team simple. Enjoy being back on the pitch.

“We have to reflect as human beings: What we do? What is our purpose, whether that’s our relationships, our career, a hobby? Why do we play? Do we play because we get paid, or do we play because we love the game?,” Gonzalez said.

Dallas averages 2.0 goals per game while allowing 1.0 goals per contest defensively. Zdenek Ondrasek has scored a team-high two goals. Jesus Ferreira has one assist and Ricardo Pepi has one shot on goal. Defensively, keeper Jesse Gonzalez has allowed two goals on five shots faced.

Why Bet On Nashville SC

The first-year MLS franchise opened its 2020 campaign with a 2-1 loss against Atlanta in their opener on Feb. 29 before falling to MLS is Back winner, Portland on March, 8. The good news is that, despite suffering a pair of losses, Nashville outshot both of their first two opponents this season, though their lone goal doesn’t bode well coming into this affair. Still, head coach Gary Smith said his message to his team was also simple.

“There were a lot of things that we were disappointed about, dejected about, frustrated about, but somehow we needed to move forward. We had a couple of days where training wasn’t overly strenuous, and we had a couple of meetings to make sure everyone was feeling and thinking in the same way, Smith said.”

Nashville is averaging 0.5 goals per game while allowing 1.5 goals per game defensively. Walker Zimmerman leads Nashville SC with one goal, Randall Leal has two shots on goal and Jimmy Medranda has one shot on goal. Defensively, Joe Willis has allowed three goals on four shots faced.

Expert Analysis and Prediction

Right now, no one really knows just how competitive Nashville will be in their inaugural campaign. They’ve got some talented players on their roster, but they aren’t nearly as experienced as Dallas and they just haven’t played together long enough to really show a definitive style. With that said, Dallas is the easy pick to get it done in this one, mostly because they have the far superior offense in this matchup. Keep it simple and back FC Dallas to get it done in this one!

Pick: Dallas 3 Nashville 1
