The domestic leagues across Europe will be dark this weekend, but that doesn’t mean we won’t have any football to look forward to.
It’s an international break, which means that it’s time to get back to Nations League action.
My Analysis
This will be Matchday 3 in the Nations League, and with promotion and relegation part of the picture in this tournament, it’s going to be a big weekend for every team taking part.
The next batch of games begins on Thursday with some great matchups, but we are jumping ahead to Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, with a pair of games from each of those days that we really like.
Let’s look at these 6 games and make some predictions for each.
^Hungary +390 vs Netherlands -163
It was a rough start to the tournament for Hungary, as they had to open things up against Germany, a team that they met, and lost to, at the European Championship.
They lost that one 5-0 in a game that was as lopsided as the score suggests, although they did manage to pick up a point in a 0-0 draw with Bosnia on Matchday 2.
The Netherlands opened their campaign with a 5-2 win over Bosnia before picking up a valuable point in an entertaining 2-2 draw with Germany.
The Dutch are scoring at will right now, and you have to wonder where the goals are going to come from for Hungary.
UEFA Nations League Pick: Hungary 0-2 Netherlands |
Czechia -147 vs Albania +420
For this game, we are making the jump to League B for what is a crucial game for both teams. Czechia saw their Nations League campaign get off to the worst possible start, as they went down 4-1 to Georgia on the road.
They needed a win in Matchday 2 in the worst way possible, which they got with a 3-2 win over Ukraine.
Albania got things off to a winning start with a 21 win over Ukraine in a road game, but they will surely be disappointed at losing 1-0 at home to Georgia in Matchday 2.
Both teams need this one in order to keep pace with the Albanians at the top, so expect a good game here.
UEFA Nations League Pick: Czechia 1-2 Albania |
Poland +420 vs Portugal -162
Back in League A, we have a great looking game coming our way on Saturday. Poland traveled to Scotland for their opening game of the tournament and battled their way to a 3-2 win.
They were on the road again for Matchday 2, falling to Croatia 1-0, so they could use a win here if they want to go in and win this group.
Portugal is perfect through their opening 2 games, but it has not been as easy as you might think.
They edged out Croatia 2-1 in their opening game, but they then had to come from a goal down to get past Scotland 2-1, with Ronaldo scoring the winner late in that game.
I think it might be a similarly tight win for Portugal here.
UEFA Nations League Pick: Poland 0-1 Portugal |
Spain -260 vs Denmark +650
The expectation was that the European Champions would roll through this group without too much of an issue, but Spain actually finds themselves in 2nd place after their opening 2 games.
They had to go on the road for their opening group game, grinding out a 0-0 tie with Serbia. They looked more like themselves in Matchday 2, hammering Switzerland 4-1 on the road.
The Danes have made a perfect start to the group, beating Switzerland 2-0 to get things started, and then going on to beat Serbia by the same score.
Both of those wins came on home soil, so it will be interesting to see how Denmark adapts to life on the road and a much tougher challenge.
UEFA Nations League Pick: Spain 2-0 Denmark |
Finland +750 vs England -300
There are no League A games coming our way on Sunday, so let’s dive into League B for the 2 games we are going to look at today.
It has been a poor start to the Nations League for Finland, who opened things up with a 3-0 loss to Greece on the road.
They then had to travel to England, where they lost 2-0. The English are out to a perfect start, winning both games by a score of 2-0.
While we expect more from this team given the amount of talent at their disposal, they have looked solid at the back as they look to win this group and head back to League A.
Things may look a little different in this group given that both teams have a Thursday game ahead of this one, but I don’t think that will impact the final result.
UEFA Nations League Pick: Finland 0-2 England |
Austria +117 vs Norway +206
Again, we are looking at a Matchday 4 game for both teams, as Austria and Norway will be in action on Thursday afternoon.
The Austrians could really use some positive results over the next 2 games, as they managed to pick up just a single point through their opening games in the group, getting outscored 3-2 in the progress.
Norway is tied for the top spot in the group with Slovenia after picking up 4 points through their first 2 games.
They will actually face the Slovenians on Thursday, so there is a possibility that they come into this one with a stranglehold on the group.
I think we will get some goals in this one, and I am leaning towards the draw here.
