2021-2022 English Premier League Season
- When: Aug. 21, 2021 – May 22, 2022
Ronaldo puts United on Chelsea’s, Man City’s and Pool’s level
Expect Manchester United to challenge the Sky Blues, Reds, and Blues for Premier League supremacy. United had already gotten better by handing Dortmund a bunch of euros for Jadon Sancho.
Sancho routinely set up Dortmund player Erling Haaland for impressive goals. Jadon can score. But he’s more of a top soccer point-guard than scorer. Think Chris Paul with his feet.
United’s most important transfer window acquisition got a huge gift on Monday. Ronaldo resigned with Manchester United. Although the signing surprised many, it probably shouldn’t have.
Juvy ditched Andrea Pirlo and decided to go back to Massimiliano Allegri. The former manager had built a powerhouse squad at Juventus based on excellent defense and taking shots when they presented.
Ronaldo is a score first type striker. He remains one of the most aggressive score keepers in history. Strikers like Ronaldo don’t fare well in Allegri’s system.
Heading back to Old Trafford may be somewhat of a surprise. But it makes sense in a lot of ways. The one who should benefit the most is Jadon Sancho.
Now that Ronaldo will play on top, Sancho should excel at what he does best, passing the ball to a talented goal scorer. Not only that, but Man U.’s defense is terrific because few players are as capable as Harry McGuire.
The rich could only get richer. United said they’re committed to transferring Erling Haaland next summer.
West Ham playing like a contender
It feels like every Premier season an under the radar team makes an early splash. Last season, Aston Villa was that team. This season, it’s West Ham.
After three matches, West Ham United has a couple of wins and a draw. But before we start singing Ham’s praises, it’s important to notice who the draw occurred against.
West Ham beat Newcastle 4-2 in their first match. In their second match, WH blasted Leicester City 4-1. But although they looked great in both matches, the best West Ham could do versus overmatched Crystal Palace is play to a 2-2 draw.
Is the team that beat Leicester the real West Ham United? Or is the team that drew with Crystal Palace the real squad?
We shall see when Premier League play resumes next weekend.
Kane says he’s ready to help the Hotspur
Harry Kane decided to forego his insistence to join Man City and instead play as hard as he could with Tottenham. So far, the decision looks like a good one.
The Hotspur are undefeated and in first place. Tottenham upset Man City 1-0 on Aug. 15. In their next couple of matches, they beat Wolverhampton and Watford by 1-0 scores.
Kane will return to a team that’s playing as well as any club in the EPL. Not only that, but on the final day of the transfer window, Aug. 31, Tottenham acquired Emerson Royal from Barcelona for 25 million euros.
Royal didn’t want to leave Barca. But now that he’s on the same team as Kane, Christian Romero, Dele Alli, and Son Heung-min, he’ll play his hardest.
Tottenham isn’t as loaded as Man United. But they’re a good soccer club. So if you want to back an underdog to win the title, it’s most likely Tottenham.
On paper, Chelsea and United look best
Pep Guardiola will say he’s happy with his team, but the Sky Blues failed to acquire Harry Kane. Liverpool will be a good team, but they won’t have a connection nearly as dynamite as Sancho to Ronaldo.
The one team who could challenge United should be Chelsea. Thomas Tuchel won the Champions League with a defense first team. Now that Romelu Lukaku is back in the fold, the Blues can score as well as play lockdown defense.
Once things settle, don’t be surprised if the Blues and Red Devils duke it out for the top spot. Both are loaded on both ends of the soccer field.
