Italy gets by Austria while Denmark dumps Wales

The chalk came up big in Saturday’s knockout stage matches. Denmark entered their game with Wales a big moneyline favorite. The Danes didn’t disappoint, destroying Wales by 4 goals.

Martin Braithwaite and Joakim Maehle each scored. Kasper Dolberg knocked in a couple. Since a tough first match versus Switzerland, the one where Christian Eriksen collapsed, Denmark has played great.

Even in the 1-2 loss to Belgium, Denmark played terrific soccer. The Danes dominated the Welsh so thoroughly that top Wales’ player Gareth Bale stormed out of the press conference.

Italy didn’t blast Austria the way Denmark dominated Wales. But the Italians got the job done in a 2-1 victory. Italy has shown they can play any style.

The Austrians played the Azzurri tight. Italy had to remain patient until the extra period. Federico Chiesa knocked in a beautiful goal in the 95th minute. In the 105th minute, Matteo Pessina scored the second goal.

Netherlands folds against the Czech Republic and Belgium beats Portugal

Italy plays Belgium in this Friday’s quarterfinals. Before getting to that match, we must talk about the biggest upset yet at EURO 2020.

Behind ridiculous play from Wijnaldum and Depay, the Netherlands had stamped themselves a chalk to win the tournament. The Dutch mowed through their opponents during the group stage.

The Czech Republic had played decent soccer, but they hadn’t impressed the way the Netherlands had. But in their match on Sunday, the favored squad melted like Dutch chocolate left out in the Arizona sun.

Czechoslovakia got to play against a 10-man squad after Netherlands’ player Matthijs de Ligt scored a red card after trying to block a Czech player twice. After Ligt left the pitch, we could see the Netherland’s side deflate.

Tomas Holes and Patrik Schick scored the goals in the Czech Republic’s 2-0 victory. The loss was yet another Netherland’s disappointment on the world stage.

In Sunday’s second match, behind Thorgan Hazard’s goal, Belgium got past Ronaldo and Portugal. But the victory may have come at a cost.

Both Kevin De Bruyne and Eden Hazard, two of Belgium’s most important players, were injured. De Bruyne came up with a left-ankle injury. Hazard injured his hamstring.

Italy versus Belgium on Friday should be epic

If De Bruyne and Eden Hazard can both play, Italy versus Belgium should be an epic match. Both teams have dominated during EURO 2020.

The Italians have yielded a single goal while De Bruyne and Romelu Lukaku have ensured Belgium remains a top contender for the title. The Belgians should remain competitive without Eden Hazard.

But without Kevin De Bruyne, beating the Azzurri will be difficult. At 100%, even with De Bruyne, getting past the Italians won’t be easy. Keep an eye on Kevin De Bruyne’s injury. If he can’t go, Italy should be a strong play.
