Rolling through early September, MLS teams have four to five games left to battle for playoff positioning. This is a big two-week stretch with a near full slate of games on Tuesday and Wednesday after all 28 teams are in action this weekend. Only LAFC in the West and Philadelphia Union in the East have clinched playoff spots so 12 of the 14 positions are up for grabs. 

This weekend features three games in the East between teams in the top seven. The Union host Orlando City, New York Red Bulls host New England and Montreal hosts Columbus Crew.

Union Face Lions

Orlando City heads to first-place Philadelphia, flying high after winning their first major trophy on Wednesday night. The Lions hosted and knocked off the Sacramento Republic 3-0 to win the U.S. Open Cup, the oldest soccer competition in North America. They will likely rest some players on Saturday with a home game against Atlanta on Wednesday and overall four games in 11 days. 

The Union have clinched a playoff spot and can secure a top-two spot in the East with a win on Saturday. They lead MLS in goals scored (63), goals allowed (21) and goal differential (+42). They haven’t lost at home this season with 10 wins and five draws and a +32 goal differential. 

Daniel Gazdag leads the Union with 16 goals while Ercan Kara leads Orlando with nine. The Lions are in fifth place with 42 points and could finish the weekend anywhere from fourth to sixth, depending on other results. When the teams met in July, the Union won on the road 1-0. 

At MyBookie, the Union are huge favorites at -151. Orlando City is +430 and a draw is +380. Over 2.5 goals is -144 and under 2.5 goals is +133.

Red Bulls Look to Bounce Back

After a 2-0 home loss to the Union last weekend, the New York Red Bulls need to bounce back this weekend to hold onto third place. With 47 points, the Red Bulls are five behind Montreal for second and two up on NYCFC for third. 

Meanwhile the New England Revolution head south in a tie for the last playoff spot on 38 points. Bruce Arena’s squad has just one win in the last five games and they could end the weekend as far down as ninth place if Inter Miami and FC Cincinnati win. 

Lewis Morgan leads the Red Bulls with 13 goals on the season while Gustavo Bou has seven for the Revolution. The Red Bulls won 1-0 in New England earlier this season and they have a +9 goal differential while the Revs are even.  

At MyBookie, New York is -105 to win at home while New England is +215. A draw is +270, over 2.5 goals is -134 and under 2.5 goals is +105. 

Crew Head to Montreal for Revenge

The Columbus Crew have lost just one game since May 21 and it was a 2-1 home loss to this weekend’s opponent, CF Montreal. In that July contest, Columbus led 1-0 after 87 minutes and gave up two dramatic late goals to lose. 

Both teams are on great form heading into Friday night’s game. The Crew have two wins and four draws in the last six and they are in sixth place with 40 points. Montreal has seven wins and two draws in the last 10 and they are in second place with 52 points. Montreal has multiple scenarios in which they clinch a playoff spot this weekend but only if they win. 

Montreal has allowed the most goals (45) for any team in the top seven of the East but they have 53 goals scored, second only to the Union. Romell Quioto leads the team with 15 goals, while Lucas Zelarayan and Cucho both have eight for the Crew. Columbus has eight draws and three wins in 13 road games this season. 

Montreal is a big favorite at MyBookie at -111 while the Crew are +310. A draw is +265 with over 2.5 goals at -129 and under 2.5 goals at +101.
