Day 10 Recap of the Fourth Round

To the surprise of absolutely nobody, Djokovic is into the semi-finals in Australia and just two wins away from his record-extending 11th title at the Australian Open. He faced a little bit more pressure from American Taylor Fritz in the quarter-final, but was able to secure the victory 7-6 3, 4-6, 6-2, 6-3. Djokovic is now 10-0 in his career against Fritz. In the other men’s quarter-final played overnight Tuesday, Jannik Sinner was leading Andrey Rublev 6-4, 7-6 5 as of press time, winning a critical second set tiebreak to boost his odds at setting up a semi-final match against Djokovic. Sinner has yet to drop a set in the tournament.

Favorites Coco Gauff and Aryna Sabalenka won their respective matches to set up what should be a classic in the first of two women’s semi-finals. Gauff overcame early jitters and had to dig deep to beat Marta Kostyuk 7-6 6, 6-7 3, 6-2. She had 51 unforced errors and overcame a 5-1 deficit in the first set, saving a pair of set points. Sabalenka, meanwhile, cruised past Barbora Krejcikova 6-2, 6-3. She hasn’t lost a set through five matches.

AO Quarterfinal Betting Predictions

Linda Noskova vs. Dayana Yastremska

AO Lines: Linda Noskova -240; Dayana Yastremska +170

The other half of the women’s draw has been incredibly unpredictable with several top players, including top seed Iga Swiatek, losing early in the tournament. That leaves 19-year-old Czech standout Linda Noskova and Dayana Yastremska in an unexpected quarter-final match with both players seeking their first grand slam semi-final appearance. Noskova has the benefit of added rest as her Round of 16 opponent, Elina Svitolina, retired in the first set. She shouldn’t have too much trouble against Yastremska, who is the lone qualifier left in the draw.

Qinwen Zheng vs. Anna Kalinskaya

AO Lines: Qinwen Zheng -210;. Anna Kalinskaya +155

Qinwen Zheng is the highest-ranked player in the other half of the women’s draw, but is 0-1 in her career against Anna Kalinskaya. While Zheng is the higher-ranked and better overall player, Kalinskaya got the better of her in 2022 in a three-set match at the Guadalajara Open in Mexico. Zheng has improved considerably since then, however, and should take this one.

Hubert Hurkacz vs. Daniil Medvedev

AO Lines: Hubert Hurkacz +190; Daniil Medvedev -280

Of the two men’s quarter-final matches, this is the one with the greatest potential for an upset. Carlos Alcaraz should beat Alexander Zverev, but Hubert Hurkacz, the betting underdog, has a real shot at beating Daniil Medvedev overnight into Wednesday. Hurkacz is 3-2 in five career matches against Medvedev, most recently beating him in the final of the Halle Open in 2022. He has also been on court about 1 hour and 30 minutes less than Medvedev through their first five matches.

2018 Australian Open Betting Preview: Quarter-Finals

Previous Betting News

Week 2 of the Australian Open is now underway, which means we are about to get into the quarter-finals. The women’s side of the draw was wide open, to begin with, and it has certainly played out that way. Over on the men’s side, we have seen a number of surprises along the way, but we are still looking at a potential rematch of last year’s final, with Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer both still alive and well. Let’s take a look at how the Australian Open betting action for the quarter-finals may play out.

2018 Australian Open Betting Preview: Quarter-Finals

Australian Open Betting Preview for Men’s Quarter-Finals

In the top half of the bracket, we have Rafael Nadal going against #6 ranked Marin Cilic in what should be a very good match. Nadal has had little trouble navigating the first 4 rounds, while Cilic has had to put some work in, especially in the last round where he went 4 sets that included a pair of tie-breakers. I’m going with Nadal to move on.

Next up is one of the surprises, as we have unseeded Brit Kyle Edmund going up against Grigor Dimitrov, with the Bulgarian coming into this one after a classic match in the 4th round, which he won over Nick Kyrgios. Edmund is in uncharted territory at this point, and I think his fairytale run comes to an end here.

Speaking of fairy tales, we have another one in the bottom half of the draw, with unseeded American Tennys Sandgren set to meet another unseeded player in Hyeon Chung. Both men have taken down some big-name players on their way to the quarter-final, and their reward may be a semifinal match-up against Roger Federer. I’m taking Chung to win and move on.

The final game in the quarter-final sees defending champion Roger Federer go head to head with #19 seed Tomas Berdych. Both men cruised through the opening 4 rounds of the tournament, barely breaking a sweat to get here, but Berdych may finally have met his match with Federer up next.

Australian Open Betting Preview for Women’s Quarter-Finals

The top half of the women’s draw sees #1 ranked Simona Halep going against #6 Karolina Pliskova. Halep has dropped just one set but was lucky to survive in that game, a 3rd round match against Lauren Davies, where Halep won the deciding set 15-13. Pliskova came from a set down to win her 4th round match and is on for another tough one here. Halep wins and moves on.

The other game in this half of the draw is a good one, with a pair of ranked players hooking up. #21 ranked Angelique Kerber survived a scare in the 4th round but has only dropped one set thus far. She will face #17 Madison Keys who has been perfect to this point. Should be a very good match, but I like Keys to move on.

Unranked Elise Mertens has been great in this tournament, going through the first 4 rounds without dropping a set. She will have her toughest match yet against #4 Elina Svitolina, who survived a bit of a scare in the second round. Svitolina should be good enough to move on here.

Perhaps the clearest path to the semi-finals lies ahead of #2 Caroline Wozniacki, as she has torn through the opening 4 rounds and will now face unranked Spaniard Carla Suarez Navarro, who has had a tough run, with 3 of her 4 games to this point going the distance. Wozniacki should win this one in straight sets.
