Sabalenka gears up for Aussie Open with Abu Dhabi finals appearance
22-year-old Aryna Sabalenka hopes to make a splash in 2021. So far, things have looked up for the budding tennis star. She’ll make an appearance in the Abu Dhabi Finals on Wednesday.
If Sabalenka beats Veronika Kudermetova, she’ll win her fourth title since last February and her third straight. In October, Aryna beat Victoria Azarenka in the J&T Bank Ostrava Open to win the trophy. She won the Upper Australia Ladies Linz in November after beating Elise Mertens 7-5, 6-2.
The WTA ranks Sabalenka tenth. That should change if, as oddsmakers and tennis handicappers expect, Aryna wins her third straight title.
MyBookie has set +1600 odds on Sabalenka to win the Australian Open. It takes a massive effort to win three straight even if players like Serena Williams, Naomi Osaka, and Simona Halep don’t participate.
Once Sabalenka wins the Abu Dhabi Open, and it’s hard to see Kudermetova upsetting her, the odds on Aryna to take the Aussie Open figure to drop to an Iga Swiatek-like +1200. Even then, because she’s played consistently since October while her competitors have been on the bench, Sabalenka might be worth a look.
Australian Open odds drop on Djokovic, Nadal, Medvedev and Thiem after Federer scratch
Odds on the favorites to when the Australian Open Men’s Singles took a hit after Roger Federer’s decision to withdraw. Without FedEx, some tennis handicappers scrambled to get the best odds they could on Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, Daniil Medvedev, and Dominic Thiem.
Djokovic attracted the most money. Djoker’s odds fell from around +150 to even money. Nadal, Medvedev, and Thiem are all at +500.
If you’re going to accept even money on Novak, the Australian Open is the tournament to do it. Djokovic has won two straight Australian Open tournaments. He’s won eight straight overall. The man does his best work Down Under.
If you’re looking for a dog to take down the champ, consider Dominic Thiem. The U.S. Open winner made it to the 2020 Aussie Open Finals. Novak has beaten Dominic in seven out of twelve matches, meaning Thiem has won five times in head-to-head matches against Djokovic.
Osaka maintains favoritism on Aussie Open WTA side
The 2020 U.S. Open winner remains the favorite to take the Australian Open. At +700, Naomi Osaka is currently an underlay, though.
Sabalanka, Sofia Kenin, and Iga Swiatek are on the verge of stardom. Any one of those three players could beat Naomi, Serena, or Simona for the victory. Most definitely do your handicapping before making a tennis player with low odds your Australian Open pick to win the women’s singles trophy.
Australian Open players to arrive in Melbourne starting this week
The top tennis players could start making their way to Melbourne later in the week or over the weekend. The men may want to prep in either the Great Ocean Road Open or the Murray River Open starting on January 29.
To play in either one of those Melbourne based tournaments, players must quarantine for at least 14 days. Women tennis players must also quarantine for 14 days.
The Gippsland Trophy and the Yarra Valley Classic are the two preps in Melbourne on the women’s side. Expect some players, especially home favorite Ashleigh Barty, to prep in either the Gippsland or Yarra Valley in preparation for the Aussie Open.
