Top Stakes Race for the Week

  • When: Friday, Nov. 26 – Sunday, Nov. 28

Churchill Downs – Friday, Nov. 26

  • Grade 2 Kentucky Jockey Club – 1 1/16 miles dirt – $400,000

Trainer Kenny McPeek figures to saddle a couple of 2-year-olds in the Kentucky Jockey Club on Friday. Both Smile Happy, a last out maiden winner, and Tiz the Bomb, who finished second in the BC Juvenile Turf, have a shot. Saffie Joseph trained White Abbario and Dale Romans trained Happy Times, both undefeated after a couple of starts, could vie for favoritism.

  • Grade 1 Clark Stakes – 1 1/8 miles dirt – $750,000

At least eight very good horses will line-up to contest the Grade 1 Clark Stakes. Among the eight, no doubt, Maxfield will go off the chalk. King Fury, Steve Asmussen trained Midnight Bourbon, and both of Todd Pletcher’s runners, Dr. Post and Happy Saver, should also attract action.

Del Mar Racetrack – Saturday, Nov. 27

  • Grade 2 Seabiscuit Handicap – 1 1/16 miles turf – $200,000

The Seabiscuit could get over subscribed. Chad Brown plans on sending a couple of horses to this race, including likely favorite Sacred Life. After Sacred Life, the horses that figure to garner the most betting dollars are Somelikeithotbrown, Neptune’s Storm, and English Bee. With so many good horses likely for this race, look for a price play.

  • Grade 1 Hollywood Derby – 1 1/8 miles turf – $300,000

Grade 2 Twilight Derby winner Subconscious figures to go off the favorite. The Richard Mandella trained runner has a home grass advantage. None Above the Law from the Peter Miller barn and Sifting Sands, trained by Chad Brown, will also get some play. So many talented horses will show up that even though Subconscious should go off the favorite, the Mandella trainee might over overlay odds.

Del Mar Racetrack – Sunday, Nov. 28

  • Grade 1 Matriarch Stakes – 1 mile turf – 300,000

Michael Stidham trained Princess Grace figures to vie for favoritism. Princess Grace had won 4 straight graded races before finishing third in the Grade 2 Goldikova Stakes on the Breeders’ Cup undercard. The horse that won the Goldikova, Going Global, won’t run in this. But Zofelle, who finished second, will. So will Chad Brown trained runners Regal Glory and Viadera. Both can win. Like with most stakes races this weekend, horseplayers shouldn’t settle on a low-priced choice.
