In college football, there are certain teams that are powerhouses and that are expected to be in the National Championship conversation every single year.
I am talking about the likes of Georgia, Alabama, Ohio State, Michigan, and more.
My Analysis
Then there are teams who are happy to be make it to a bowl game, well aware that a playoff spot seems out of reach.
Those supposed lesser teams will have a lot more hope this season with the playoffs now expanded to 12 teams.
There is now a chance for teams from the Group of 5 conferences to make it into the postseason and potentially spring an upset or two.
Can the Troy Trojans of the Sun Belt Conference be one of those teams? Let’s take a look at the current odds and their chances of having another big season.

Troy Trojans Regular Season, Conference, and Win Total
After winning back-to-back Sun Belt championships, it was clear to everyone that coach Jon Sumrall was probably destined for greater things. He has indeed moved on, as have a number of key personnel from those winning seasons.
The Trojans have now made the move from a defensive specialist to a coach that is all about the offense, so it really is tough to know what this team might look like this season.
This could either be a seamless transition or a period of adjustment and a rebuild. After a pair of seasons with 11 and 12 wins, respectively, the bookies see a struggle coming, with the Trojans win total for this year set at 6 ½.
One of the biggest issues that the Trojans are going to need to deal with this season is replacing a number of starting players.
This is particularly noticeable on the offensive side of the football, where they will have a new QB, a new running back, and a bunch of new guys on the offensive line.
That could prove to be problematic, even for a group of coaches that are offensive specialists.
Goose Crowder looks likely to be the starting QB for Troy this season, and he only had 13 total passing attempts last season.
How quickly he can adapt to life as a starter may be the key to Troy’s success or failure.
The strength of this Trojans team under Sumrall was their stifling defensive play, and while they have lost some guys this off season, they have also made some nice moves to get guys with Power 4 experience from the transfer portal.
Will that, though, be enough to keep them in games with an offense that might have some teething problems?
The bookies are definitely not sold on the Trojans and have them sitting in the middle of the pack in the Sun Belt at odds of +1500 to win the conference.

Troy Trojans Postseason Odds
This, to me at least, feels like a season of change for the Trojans. It’s impossible to lose a successful coach and a number of players that helped him to those successes and hope for a seamless transition.
I do think that the defense can keep them in some games, so I might well be willing to take Troy to surpass their win total for this season, but beyond that, I would not be wagering on them to win much else.

2023 Troy Trojans
Prior to the start of every college football season, we look at the current landscape and make predictions on the teams we believe will excel, as well as those we think will tank. It’s an inexact science, which means we always have a bunch of teams who do a whole lot better than expected, while some who we thought would be great end up being mediocre at best. Last season, the Troy fell into the pleasant surprise category, but the problem they have now is that they are not going to be sneaking up on anyone this time around. The question here is whether they can build upon the success of last season to deliver another great year. Let’s take a closer look to see if we can answer that question, so here’s the preview for your college football betting lines to win the NCAA National Championship.

The Trojans in 2022
After a run of 3-straight 5-win seasons, coach Chip Lindsey was shown the door, with the reins handed to Jon Sumrall. The expectation was that he would need some time to turn things around, but he made an immediate impact, leading the Trojans to a 12-2 season and the Sun belt Championship. That success landed him a lucrative new deal, but can he repeat that great performance this season, especially now that the pressure is on him to deliver? We will get into that in a moment, but what we can say is that most of the core group that exceled in 2022 is returning for this season, so let’s dive in and make some predictions.
Betting Odds for the Trojans in 2023
While the record for the Trojans last season was 12-2, 10 of those wins were in the regular season, with the other 2 coming in the Conference Championship Game and their Bowl Game. This season, the bookies have the Troy win total set at 8 ½ for the regular season, which suggests a potential backward step. Their biggest test comes in Week 2 against Kansas State, but the rest of their games look winnable, making the OVER seem like a decent bet.
Their conference schedule looks to be favorable, as they will miss out on some of the better teams in the East Division. The fact that the Trojans have so many players returning from their Sun Belt winning season suggests that this team should be able to slide back into a groove and start winning again right off the bat. South Alabama is in as the favorites to win the conference, but Troy is right on their heels at odds of +310. Those odds will shorten rather quickly if they get on a winning roll early, so now is the time to wager if you think the Trojans can repeat.
If the 12-team playoff system had been in place last year, Troy would very likely have been in the mix, but like last season, we have one more year of a 4-team playoff before moving to 12 teams next season. That means that they have almost zero shot at getting in, so forget the playoffs and the National Championship and instead focus your attention on the win total and Conference Championship wagers for the Troy Trojans.
