While some major sports struggled to come to terms with a safe way to get back to the action, the UFC were quick to put together a plan. On the face of it, a dedicated fight island in Abu Dhabi seemed somewhat ridiculous, but it is a plan that has reaped major dividends for the UFC. Fight Island 3 is right around the corner, and we can only hope that it delivers as much action as we saw in the second set of fights on the island. All told, there were 5 fights on the main card and some truly devastating performances to go with it. We are going to take a moment to take a look at how all 5 fights played out, so let’s get right to it so you can plan ahead your bets against their MMA odds for the next Fight Island.
UFC Figueiredo vs Benavidez Recap
Alexandre Pantoja Vs Askar Askarov
The main card began with a flyweight bout that was always destined to be more or a wrestling match than anyone else. That was very much the case from the off, with a number of submission attempts coming in the early going. It really felt as though this one was going to be done quickly, but both men settled into a grappling war that went all the way to the final bell. In the end, it was Askarov who prevailed, taking his career record to 12-0-1 in the process. This win will move Askarov up the rankings and perhaps give him a title date with destiny.
Ariane Lipski Vs Luana Carolina
If you like a bit of a brutal ending to your fights, then this is one that you need to go back and watch when you get the chance. Ariana Lipski has earned the nickname of the Queen of Violence for a reason, one that was on full display here. It took her a little over a minute and a half to dispose of Carolina, using a brutal knee bar that left her opponent screaming in pain and tapping out. The nature of the win earned Lipski the Performance of the Night bonus.
Marc Diakiese Vs Rafael Fiziev
Fiziev came into this fight feeling that he had something to prove after getting knocked out with a kick in his UFC debut. He maty have shown that the loss was a blip on the radar, as he looked very good in a UD win over Englishman Marc Diakiese, who had nor defense against the kicks that hammered his body throughout this fight. In an empty arena, those body blows sounded brutal. Fiziev may just be one to watch in this division. This bout was awarded Fight of the Night.
Jack Hermansson Vs Kevin Gastelum
There were a lot of expectations that this fight might well deliver something special, but it ended being over before it even began. Hermansson had Gastelum on the mat quickly and ended up having his opponent tap out after just 1 minute and 18 seconds. Probably a little disappointing for fight fans settling in for a long battle, but a sure sign that Hermansson is not that far away from a title shot.
Deivison Figueiredo Vs Joseph Benavidez
Figueiredo felt as though he had something to prove in this one, as he had already beaten Benavidez back in February. Despite that win, his inability to make weight in that bout meant that he was not handed the vacant flyweight title that was left open after Henry Cejudo required. If anything, Figueiredo looked even better in this fight, hammering Benavidez from the opening bell and finally forcing him to tap out after laying on a vicious choke hold.
