When you have an event that comes with three title fights on the main card, you expect that there are going to be some fireworks and surprises. That is exactly what we go this past Saturday night at UFC 259. There are a lot of stories that came out of an amazing night of fighting, as well as some beefs and potential future matchups. Most of what we are looking at this week in our UFC news and rumors roundup comes from what went down on Saturday night. Let’s get right into the fallout and talk about all of the big news so you can continue betting against their UFC odds.
2021 MMA Betting News & Rumors Update | Mar. 8th Edition
One of the things that UFC fans have been rather impatiently waiting for is the return of Jon Jones, who will move into the Heavyweight division when he comes back. There were many who believed that the Israel Adesanya moving into the Light Heavyweight division for a title bout against Jan Blachowicz on Saturday night was the first step in a future fight against Jones. That now looks unlikely, with Adesanya losing and Jones taking to Twitter during the bout to claim that he is no longer interested in fighting Adesanya any time soon. It’s an event that might still happen, but it looks unlikely at this point.
Speaking of social media, we had one fight spill out of the octagon and onto the internet on Saturday night. In one of the more dramatic moments of the evening, Petr Yan lost his belt to Aljamain Sterling after getting KO’ed for landing an illegal knee shot to the temple of Sterling. The fighters took to social media later in the night to take some shots at one another even after Yan admitted that he made a mistake that warranted a KO. There is some bad blood brewing here, which is good news when you consider that both fighters have agreed to a rematch.
In the third title fight of the night, things went exactly as expected, with Amanda Nunes taking less than two minutes to submit Megan Anderson. The Featherweight division now totally belongs to Nunes, with no real challenger in sight. Even Anderson looked like a bit of a stretch to be in a title fight this past weekend. With no other challenger looming, the expectation is that Nunes will move back to Bantamweight to defend her title against the winner of the upcoming fight between Holly Holm and Julianna Pena.
In news outside the octagon, reports are suggesting that the UFC and BT Sport have fired announcer Dan Hardy. The 38-year-old, who still had a fighting contract with UFC, was allegedly let go after an incident with a female employee. Details of the incident were slim, with most reports suggesting that it was an argument of some sort. This was not the first incident for Hardy, as he was in trouble back in July on Fight Island after screaming at a referee to stop a fight between Francisco Trinaldo and Jai Herbert.
