What Games Should You Watch This Week in the WNBA?

We are just 11 days away from the start of the WNBA playoffs, but before we get to that point, there is still some regular season business to attend to.

Most notably, there is now only 1 postseason spot up for grabs, and while the Chicago Sky look like a lock to grab the #8 seed, it is still mathematically possible that they might go in the tank and leave the spot open for the 2 other teams still in with a shot at overtaking them.

My Analysis of WNBA Games to watch this Week

There are also still a couple of seeds positions that could be flipped, but for the most part, the playoffs look to be pretty much set in stone.

With all of that said, we still have some very good games to look forward to over the next few days, so let’s take a quick look at those games.

^

Washington Mystics at Chicago Sky

Wednesday, September 11, 8:00 PM | This game may well be the one that gets us one step closer to the final playoff spot being settled. As mentioned above, the Chicago Sky is the team currently holding onto the #8 seed, but the Washington Mystics are 2 games back and still in the hunt.

They need to be pretty much perfect in their remaining games, and even then, it might not be good enough, especially since Atlanta are also sitting ahead of them.

The Mystics are just 5-5 in their last 10 games, while the Sky has won 2 in a row ahead of this game. They don’t come much bigger than this.

Las Vegas Aces at Indiana Fever

Friday, September 13, 7:00 PM, ION | If the Las Vegas Aces are to complete the three-peat this season, they are going to need to do it as one of the middle seeds.

They are currently sitting in 4th in the standings right now, but they also still have the Seattle Storm breathing down their neck.

Las Vegas need another win or two to ensure that #4 seed and home court advantage in Round 1.

They will hit the road on Friday night to face a Fever team that has clinched their playoff spot with a great run to end the season, winning 8 of their last 10 games.

Connecticut Sun at Phoenix Mercury

Friday, September 13, 10:00 PM, ION | We have two playoff bound teams meeting up on Friday night in what might be a preview of a Round 1 matchup.

The Sun are currently sitting in the #3 seed, but they still have a shot at moving up a spot, which would have them facing the Mercury, who are down in 7th, meeting up in the opening round.

The Sun are probably hoping that this is how things play out given that they have won all 3 prior meetings with the Mercury this season.

Minnesota Lynx at New York Liberty

Sunday, September 15, 7:00 PM | This is easily the biggest game on the schedule this week, as we have the current top two seeds facing off.

The Lynx cannot catch the Liberty, who have already clinched the #1 seed, but they still need to try and hold off the Connecticut Sun, who are just a game back in the #3 spot.

The season series between these two teams is tied at 1-1, and it has been the home team that has won both games, so that might mean advantage Liberty here.

WNBA Week 15 | August 8th – August 13th, 2023

Las Vegas Aces at Dallas Wings

Tuesday, August 8th, 2023 at 8:00 pm EDT
College Park Center, Arlington, TX

The Wings are coming off a tough weekend. Dallas lost a pair of games to Chicago, which had previously been struggling with consistency and getting wins in the win column. The Wings will host Las Vegas Tuesday night in what will be an important game for both teams.

The Aces also had a difficult last outing, getting blasted by the New York Liberty. When Dallas and Las Vegas previously met, on July 30, the Aces tore apart Dallas’ defense in a 104-91 win. Las Vegas is 24-3 overall and 15-12 against the spread.

The Aces will be without Candace Parker, who has been out for weeks due to injury. Dallas is 15-13 overall and 13-14-1 against the spread. The Wings have been hampered by poor 3-point shooting, despite being in the top three in the league in scoring average. Dallas only shoots 30.2 percent from the 3-point line, which is last in the league.

Minnesota Lynx at Chicago Sky

Tuesday, August 8th, 2023 at 8:00 pm EDT
Wintrust Arena, Chicago, IL

The Lynx have lost a little steam since pulling surprising upsets over New York and Connecticut in back-to-back games. Minnesota has now lost two straight and is positioned in seventh in the standings as the Lynx head on the road to play Chicago. The Sky are heating up, winning three straight games to move within a half-game of Minnesota and a game behind Washington.

The Sky have found the magic elixir on offense. Chicago has scored 104 or more points during its past three games. Overall, the Sky are in the middle of the WNBA pack when it comes to scoring average at 81 points per game. Chicago is 5-2 against the spread over its past seven games.

Minnesota is 15-12-1 against the spread this season. The Lynx are 4-1 against the spread over its past five games. Minnesota has had a difficult stretch over the past four games, going 2-2 while playing four games against Connecticut and New York.

Atlanta Dream at LA Sparks

Sunday, August 13th, 2023 at 9:00 pm EDT
Michelob ULTRA Arena, Las Vegas, NV

The Dream are in a good position to crack the top four in the WNBA standings. While just 5-5 over its past ten games, Atlanta is in a tie with Dallas for fourth. The Dream are 2-0 against Los Angeles this season.

Atlanta is 1-4 against the spread over the past five games. The Dream has struggled to score during that stretch, being held to 80 or fewer points in three of the past five games. LA has covered five straight games against the spread but are just 2-3 straight up during that stretch.

The Sparks, who will host Atlanta on Friday, need to lean on their defense to win games. Los Angeles has been held to fewer than 80 points in three of its past four games.
