Tuesday and Thursday: Las Vegas Aces vs Connecticut Sun
On Tuesday and Thursday, the Las Vegas Aces and Connecticut Sun will play in two games that could be a potential preview of this year’s WNBA Finals. Las Vegas is unbeaten on the year heading into Tuesday’s action, while the Sun have made their way out to a 6-1 start.
This game features a fascinating contrast of styles, where both teams will look to impose their will on their opponent to make an early season statement.
For the Aces, a fast pace and three-point shooting are their keys to victory, as they will look to push the Sun out of their comfort zone. Meanwhile, the Sun will aim to slow the Aces down and use their superior play in the paint to get to the free throw line and set their defense against Las Vegas.
Whichever team can do the better job of accomplishing those goals will have the better chance to win these two huge contests at Mohegan Sun Arena.
Wednesday and Friday: Phoenix Mercury vs Dallas Wings
Another massive two-game set will take place this week in Arlington, as the Dallas Wings will host the Phoenix Mercury for a pair of Western Conference contests.
The Wings are a .500 team so far this season, while the Mercury are an underwhelming 1-3 thus far. But if either team can secure a two-game sweep in this series, they could end up with some momentum that can help them to move up the standings as the season wears on.
As is typically the case in games featuring the Phoenix Mercury, the question in this game is whether the Wings can slow down Brittney Griner on the defensive end of the floor.
With Teaira McCowan away from the team as she is playing with the Turkish national team, Dallas’ top defensive anchor will not be around to contest Griner in the paint.
Instead, Natasha Howard and Satou Sabally will likely be put on Griner, and will need to avoid foul trouble to keep the Wings in position to win.
Friday: New York Liberty vs Atlanta Dream
The New York Liberty are 4-2 so far this season, but they have not looked quite as super as they were expected to be when forming their super team in the offseason.
Coming off of a home loss to the Chicago Sky where New York blew a 19-point lead, the Liberty will look to rebound after some extensive time off. But the Atlanta Dream will have other plans as they look to take down the Liberty at home.
Atlanta has gone 1-2 at home so far this season, but they have gone 2-1 against the spread in those three games. They nearly came back to beat the Las Vegas Aces on their home floor on Friday, even with Rhyne Howard playing less than her best in that game.
Against a Liberty team that is clearly still figuring things out, the Dream could very well steal this one outright.
