Why Bet on New York?

In Thursday’s series finale vs. Kansas City, the Yankees gave third baseman Gia Urshela and shortstop Gleyber Torres the game off, but both are likely to play Friday. Urshela also sat out Wednesday after getting hit in the shin by a pitch on Tuesday night. He remains day-to-day with a contusion. Torres is simply in a funk, 2-for-35 (.057) with 15 strikeouts over his last 10 games.

It’s Domingo German on the mound here. German (4-4) surrendered four runs over four innings last Saturday in a no-decision against the Athletics. German allowed six hits, including solo shots to Tony Kemp and Matt Chapman in the truncated outing. He generated six strikeouts and only issued two walks. He continues to have issues with home runs.

The 28-year-old righty owns a solid 3.40 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 63/15 K/BB ratio across 69 innings (13 starts) this season. After registering a 2.35 ERA across nine starts from April 22 to June 6, German has surrendered 11 combined earned runs over 8.1 innings across his past two starts. He will pitch on extended five days’ rest due to Monday’s team off day.

German faced Boston on June 6 and pitched well in a no-decision, surrendering one run on three hits over 5 2/3 innings of work. The only blemish was a solo home run off the bat of Alex Verdugo in the opening inning. He departed with a 3-1 lead and in line for the victory, but the Yankees bullpen was unable to hang on for him.

The Red Sox will close out the season’s first half by playing 19 games in 20 days. Tuesday began a stretch of 16 consecutive days with a game, including a West Coast trip. It’s Martin Perez (5-4) on the mound. Perez picked up the win on Saturday after allowing one run on three hits and two walks over five innings as the Red Sox defeated the Royals 7-1. Perez generated a 38 percent whiff rate on his changeup and 42 percent CSW during the contest to lower his ERA to 4.32 WHIP to 1.40 over 66 2/3 frames.

Perez is 3-1 with a 2.10 ERA (8 ER/34.1 IP) on the road this season. In 2 June road starts, he is 2-0 with a 0.71 ERA (1 ER/12.2 IP) and holding opponents to a .195 AVG. Perez leads the majors in called third strikes this season (37). He hasn’t faced the Yankees this year.
