Mississippi State vs Louisville 2019 Music City Bowl Odds, Preview & Pick
There’s no NFL action next Monday with the regular season over, but there is afternoon college football as the postseason restarts following Sunday off. The Music City Bowl from Nashville features Mississippi State of the SEC against Louisville of the ACC. The Bulldogs are short favorites on the Mybookie NCAAF odds.
How to Bet Mississippi State vs Louisville Music City Bowl Odds & Game Info
- When: Monday, 4 PM ET
- Where: Nissan Stadium, Nashville
- TV: ESPN
- Live Stream: WatchESPN
- Radio: SiriusXM
- Music City Bowl Odds: Mississippi State -4 (Total 63.5)
Series HistoryThe two teams will meet for the sixth time and first since State’s 31-27 victory in the 2017 TaxSlayer (Gator) Bowl. MSU leads the series 3-2. The Bulldogs won all five previous meetings but victories in 1975 and 1976 were vacated due to playing an ineligible player.
Why Bet on Mississippi State?MSU is making its 23rd all-time bowl appearance and will conclude the decade as one of only five SEC programs to go to a bowl every season from 2010-19, joining Alabama, Georgia, LSU and Texas A&M. The Bulldogs own a 13-9 bowl record. Coach Joe Moorhead, who has produced 14 on-field victories, is one of just two State coaches to lead the program to bowl games in his first two seasons on the job joining Jackie Sherrill (1991-92).
MSU got bowl eligible at 6-6 by beating Ole Miss 21-20 in a crazy Egg Bowl finish on Nov. 28. The Rebels’ Luke Logan missed a 35-yard extra point try after Ole Miss receiver Elijah Moore was penalized for celebrating a touchdown by crawling and pretending to urinate like a dog. That would partly lead to the firing of Ole Miss coach Matt Luke. The one-point win was Mississippi State’s narrowest margin of victory in the 116-game series. The previous mark was a 9-7 decision on Nov. 30, 1937 in Oxford, Mississippi.
Some NumbersGarrett Shrader hit on 10-of-14 of his pass attempts for 108 yards, and Kylin Hill led the Bulldogs’ rushing attack with 132 yards on 27 carries, highlighted by a 28-yard gain. Hill’s rushing output brought his season rushing total to 1,347 yards, putting him 44 yards shy of the single-season rushing record. With his eighth 100-yard rushing game of the year he has tied the MSU single-season record set by Anthony Dixon (2009) and Nick Fitzgerald (2016). Hill has now run for 2,474 yards in his career, moving past James Johnson (1997-98) for ninth in MSU program history. Hill is one of seven Power 5 running backs with 1,300-plus rushing yards and 10-plus rushing touchdowns this season.
He was named first-team All-SEC, just the fourth time in Mississippi State history a Bulldog running back was selected to that team. Hill has announced he will turn pro but will play in this game. Senior defensive end Chauncey Rivers was also recognized by the AP, earning second-team status. Rivers leads the Bulldogs in sacks (5.0) and tackles for loss (7.5) this season. He is also tops on the team and 10th in the SEC in total pressures (29).
Shrader is set to make his fifth career start against the Cardinals. Shrader will be the second true freshman to start at QB in a bowl game for MSU since 2007. A win would give the Bulldogs their first three-game win streak to close a season since 2013 and just their third in the modern era since the end of World War II (the other was in 1976).
Why Bet on Louisville?Louisville will make its 23rd bowl appearance. The Cards own an all-time record of 10-11-1 with wins in three of their last six appearances, including a 27-21 win in the Music City Bowl in 2015.
Louisville finished second in the ACC Atlantic standings in 2019 with wins over Boston College, Wake Forest, Virginia, NC State and Syracuse. A year ago, Louisville was one of the worst teams in the country. Scott Satterfield’s rebuild is far from complete, but the progress made in Year 1 has been exceptional.
After finishing 2-10 last season, the Cardinals have enjoyed a remarkable turnaround in 2019, posting a 7-5 record, the top improvement among Power 5 teams. The five more wins are the third-most in the nation behind Navy and Central Michigan, which saw a seven-game improvement from a year ago. The Cardinals became only the second school in the ACC to go 0-8 in league play the previous year to improve to 5-3 the following year.
Satterfield is the fourth first-year coach at Louisville to guide the Cardinals to a bowl game, and the first since Charlie Strong led UofL to a win over Southern Mississippi in the 2010 Beef O’Brady’s Bowl.
The Cards didn’t close the regular season well, though, losing 45-13 at Kentucky. Lynn Bowden rushed for career highs of 284 yards and four touchdowns to lead Kentucky’s school-record 517-yard ground performance. It marked the third time the Cardinals allowed 500 or more rushing yards in a game in program history.
Some NumbersTutu Atwell tied the school record for touchdown receptions in a season with 12, equaling Ibn Green (1998) and Devante Parker (2013). It was Atwell’s fifth consecutive game with a receiving touchdown, which ties him for the second-longest streak in school history. (Ronnie Ghent (2001-02) and Deion Branch (2000-01)). Atwell passed Mark Clayton for seventh place on Louisville’s single-season list for receiving yards with 1,129 yards.
Javian Hawkins had his seventh 100-yard rushing game this season, tied with Bilal Powell (2010), Frank Moreau (1999), and Walter Peacock (1973) for third-most in a season behind Lamar Jackson (10 in 2017, 8 in 2016). Hawkins ended the regular season with 1,420 yards, which places him fourth on the school’s single-season list.
Louisville has not been shut out in 249 games, which marks the 12th-longest scoring streak in the country. The last time the Cardinals were shut out was a 32-0 defeat at Florida State in 2000.
