Iowa vs Indiana Season Series
Only scheduled meeting. Last year, Iowa won both. It was 77-72 in Bloomington. Jordan Bohannon had 25 points, including the last 11 for the Hawkeyes. Twice in the final 91 seconds, he beat the shot clock with demoralizing, long 3-pointers and then he finished it off by making five of six free throws in the 27 seconds. Tyler Cook had 13 points, five rebounds and three assists in the first half, staking Iowa to a 46-36 halftime lead. He finished with 21 points and seven rebounds as Luka Garza spent most of the game in foul trouble.
Indiana holds a 103-77 advantage in the series. Indiana holds a 60-30 advantage in games played at Bloomington.
Why Bet on Iowa?
Iowa (17-7, 8-5 Big Ten) is off a 96-72 blowout of Nebraska on Saturday. Iowa, which made just 4 of 33 3-point attempts in a 76-70 loss to the Huskers on Jan. 7, made three 3-pointers in the opening 4 1/2 minutes on the way to an early 21-5 lead. But the Hawkeyes missed their next 11 shots, going scoreless for almost eight minutes. The Huskers couldn’t capitalize, though, and Iowa led 41-30 at halftime. The Hawkeyes opened the second half with a 25-8 run to put the game away.
Sophomore Joe Wieskamp scored 20 of his career-best 30 points in the second half as Iowa turned an 11-point advantage into a rout. The Hawkeyes led by as many as 38 points over the final 20 minutes. He finished 10-of-15 from the field and made a pair of 3-point field goals and went 8-for-8 from the free throw line to tally his fifth 20-plus point game this season. Wieskamp also had seven rebounds and three assists in 28 minutes.
Junior Luka Garza, the likely Big Ten Player of the Year, joined Wieskamp in double figures, notching his ninth straight 20-point game. He scored 22 points on 9-of-13 shooting and grabbed eight rebounds. Iowa shot 48.6 percent and made 11 3-pointers — from six different players — in the game. Iowa’s 96 points scored were the most scored by the team this season and the most against Nebraska in the 34-game series history.
Garza (23.1) and Wieskamp (15.4) combine to average 38.5 points per game, which is the fifth best Division I scoring duo in the country. Garza’s 20+ points in nine straight Big Ten games is the longest streak by a Hawkeye since Fred Brown in 1971. Garza is one of only two players nationally to average better than 23 points and 9.9 rebounds per game. Garza ranks first in the Big Ten in scoring (23.1 ppg), second in double-doubles (13), and fourth in rebounding (9.9 rpg).
Iowa leads the Big Ten in scoring offense (79.1). In Big Ten games only, Iowa leads the league in scoring (77.8), field goal percentage (.443), and assists (17.2).
Iowa are 11-4 SU in their last 15 games this season.
The total has gone OVER in 5 of Iowa’s last 7 games.
Why Bet on Indiana?
The Hoosiers (15-8, 5-7 Big Ten) lost their fourth in a row Saturday, 74-62 vs. Purdue. The raucous crowd inside Assembly Hall started rocking early, in anticipation of seeing Bob Knight back on his home court for the first time in nearly 20 years. Knight was introduced during a halftime ceremony along with former players, including members of the Hoosiers’ 1980 Big Ten championship team.
Purdue needed just one good run — a 12-0 scoring spurt to close the first half — to swing the game. It gave the Boilermakers a 37-28 lead, which they extended to 54-38 with 12:39 left. Trayce Jackson-Davis led IU with 16 points, eight rebounds and four assists. Jerome Hunter added 10 points, his second double-figure effort in three games. The Hoosiers, one of the Big Ten’s best rebounding teams, were out-rebounded for the second straight game, 29-28.
On Monday, Jackson-Davis was been named Big Ten Freshman of the Week, the fourth time he has earned this honor this season. In the Big Ten, Jackson-Davis is the top freshman scorer overall (13.8) and in conference games (12.7). He also leads in overall and conference play in field goal percentage (59.6 and 53.5), blocked shots (1.9 and 1.8), free throws made (94 and 46) and attempts (132 and 63). He is second overall and in league games in rebounding (7.9 and 7.2).
Jackson-Davis is just one of four freshmen nationally (Vernon Carey, Jr. – Duke, Zeke Nnaji – Arizona and Isaiah Stewart – Washington) to lead his team in scoring, rebounds, field goal percentage, free throws made and free throws attempted and blocked shots.
Redshirt junior forward Joey Brunk leads the conference in field goal percentage in Big Ten games only at 56.6%. Among players in the Big Ten who have come off the bench 10 or more times this season, senior Devonte Green leads the conference averaging 10.6 points in those games.
