2024 Texas Longhorns Season

Texas betting lines are already generating buzz, and this guide equips you with the insights to navigate them strategically.

The Texas Longhorns made their first College Football Playoff appearance last season.

The Longhorns fell in the semifinals to Michael Penix Jr. and the Washington Huskies.

This season, most expect Quinn Ewers to lead the Horns to another CFP Semifinal.

Now playing in the SEC, where Georgia and Alabama reign, Texas is a solid second choice to win their conference and then march to the 12-Team College Football Playoff.

Will coach Steve Sarkisian, Ewers, and the rest of the Longhorns get it done? Check out Texas Longhorns college football odds, analysis, and predictions.

Texas Longhorns Season Preview

Texas Longhorns Changes on Offense

Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers is at +900, the overall second choice, to win the Heisman Trophy.

Ewers gets to throw to a couple of top wide receiver targets in Bama transfer Isaiah Bond and Houston transfer Matthew Golden.

TE Amari Niblack also comes over from Bama.

The teams strength should be up front where 2 seniors and 3 juniors will start.

If the line is as good as expected, the Ewers could be an overlay to win the Heisman.

So consider if you believe the offensive line becomes one of the best in the nation because Ewers will have plenty of chances to show why he’s starting over Arch Manning.

Texas Longhorns Changes on Defense

Sarkisian is a master at using the transfer portal.

Three players Sark transferred this offseason: BUCK Trey Moore, NT Bill Norton, and FS Andrew Mukuba, project to start.

Mukuba comes over from Clemson, Moore played on UCLA’s eleventh nationally ranked defense, and Norton is a grad transfer from Georgia.

All three should have an impact.

Even with those three, the defense is the weaker unit.

The biggest problem Texas will face on D is that the Longhorns have a difficult first season in the SEC schedule.

The SEC, no doubt, is a much deeper conference than the Big 12.

Texas Longhorns Schedule Analysis

Texas Longhorns Schedule Analysis

  • Over 10.5 +136
  • Under 10.5 -168

10.5 games is a lot.

Texas should make the College Football Playoff.

They may be the only 3-loss team to notch a ticket due to their deep schedule.

In addition to the Red River Rivalry against Oklahoma, Texas faces Michigan in Ann Arbor on Sep 7.

The Longhorns must also host Georgia on Oct 19.

Games versus Florida and at Arkansas and at Texas A&M aren’t locks.

Oklahoma, which also plays in the SEC this season, could be better than they were last NCAAF season.

Jackson Arnold has the talent to be a top 5 college football quarterback.

The Sooners defense will be much improved in Brett Venables third season at the helm.

Georgia is the best team in the country.

The only team that can beat Georgia is Georgia, meaning if the Dawgs play their best in every game, an undefeated season looms.

Florida and Arkansas aren’t as good as Texas, but the Longhorns struggled against TCU, Kansas State, and Houston in 2023.

Even subpar teams in the SEC are tough to beat.

2 losses seem like a sure thing.

Go under 10.5.

Texas Longhorns SEC Odds +310

If 1 of the losses is to the Wolverines on Sep 7 and the other is against Georgia, Texas could face off against the Bulldogs in the SEC Championship.

Even in a rematch, it will be hard to pick Texas.

UGA is loaded on both sides of the ball and are extra motivated this season after missing out on the College Football Playoff last season.

So if the Horns do take on the Dawgs in the SEC Championship, Georgia wins.

Then there’s Ole Miss and Alabama.

Although Texas doesn’t play either during the regular season, both will be strong.

Mississippi, in particular, has the look of a potential SEC champ.

Jaxon Dart, as good as Quinn Ewers is, could be the best quarterback in the conference.

Don’t back the Longhorns to win the SEC.

Texas Longhorns Odds to Win the National Championship +800

Texas is third choice after the Georgia Bulldogs and Ohio State Buckeyes to win the National Championship.

On paper, the Horns can get it done.

But, unfortunately, those two teams are heads and tails above the rest of college football this season.

The Buckeyes are loaded and Ron Day hired Chip Kelly to run his offense.

Georgia has talent at every position.

So although Texas can win the National Championship, doing so is going to be hard because before the title game, they’re likely to have to beat either Georgia or Ohio State.

Don’t back Texas to lift the National Championship trophy.

Texas Longhorns 2023 Season Betting Guide

Previous Betting News

The Texas Longhorns had a decent 2022. This season, most expect the Longhorns to win the Big 12 Conference. Winning the Big 12 would be a nice way for Texas to end their final season in the conference.

In 2023, the Longhorns, along with rival Oklahoma, head to the SEC. Keep reading for a season betting analysis for Texas’ final in the Big 12.

Let’s see if the Texas Longhorns have what it takes to back the betting odds to win the NCAA National Championship this season.

What is Texas’ Straight Up Prediction this Season?

Bijan Robinson, one of the greatest running backs in Texas’ history, went pro after last season. But although the Longhorns must replace Robinson, their fans shouldn’t worry too much.

Jonathan Brooks, Keilan Robinson, Jaydon Blue, and CJ Baxter, the number one ranked RB in the 2023 class, will ensure the Horns rushing game remains stellar.

Not only that, but the quarterback room might be the best in the nation. Top overall recruit, Arch Manning, Peyton’s and Eli’s nephew, chose to play in Austin even though Quinn Ewers is the starter. Joining Manning and Ewers on the QB depth chart is redshirt freshman Maalik Murphy.

Adonai Mitchell transfers from Georgia to join a WR room that includes two of the best in college, Xavier Worthy and Jordan Wittingham. Isaiah Neyor also returns. Ewers has plenty of weapons.

Starting tight-end Ja’Tavion Sanders will line up again. In addition, Sark gets all five offensive linemen back.

On the defense side of the ball, tackles Byron Murphy II and T’Vondre Sweat return. So does defensive end Barryn Sorrell. Linebacker Jaylen Ford posted monster numbers in 2022: 119 tackles, 4 picks, 3 forced fumbles, 2 fumble recoveries, and 10 tackles for a loss.

Senior corner Ryan Watts leads a secondary that’s loaded, and one of the reasons many feel the Longhorns can upset Alabama in week 2.

Texas, for sure, will compete versus a Bama squad that doesn’t have a starting signal-caller close to Bryce Young. If Texas beats Alabama, the Longhorns first road game of the season, Texas could run the table.

At no time since the Mac Brown and Vince Young days has Texas had as good of a team as they’ve got this season. It sounds crazy, but Texas could go undefeated during the regular season. We don’t have enough guts to call that, but we do have enough guts to say Texas goes 11-1 straight up.

What Will the Longhorns’ Against the Spread Record be this Season?

The Longhorns went 8-4 against the spread in the regular season. But it appears Texas snuck up on oddsmakers.

Oddsmakers will set lines more difficult for Texas to cover this season. The Horns should go .500 ATS in 2023. 6-6 against the spread is the call.

What will be the over under total record for Texas Longhorns games in 2023?

The over under total went 6-6 last season. Although Texas’ offense should be just as good, oddsmakers know this.

So there’s no reason to believe the linemakers get it wrong in 2023. Like in 2022, Texas goes 6-6 over-to-under.

Texas Longhorns 2019 College Football Season Betting Guide

Previous Betting News

Well, things are clearly on schedule as head coach Tom Herman gets set for his third year leading the Texas Longhorns. In 2017, Herman led the longtime Big 12 residents to a respectable, seven-win season after replacing former head coach Charlie Strong. Last season, the Horns took an even bigger step forward by recording double-digit victories for the first time since they won 13 games for former head coach Mack Brown way back in 2009.

Now, as they get set for the upcoming 2019 campaign and Year 3 of the Herman era, Texas is hoping to take another step forward to challenge for both, the Big 12 conference crown and a berth in the four-team College Football Playoff. Better yet, you’re going to find out everything there is to know about the Longhorns before they take to the gridiron for their 2019 regular season opener. Now, let’s find out if the Horns are going to be contenders or pretenders in 2019.

Texas Longhorns 2019 College Football Season Betting Guide

2020 National Championship Odds: +2800
2019 Win Total Odds: 9½

Betting Statistics
ATS: 10-4 (W-L) / 6-7-1 (ATS) / 3-2-1 (Home) / 3-5-0 (Away) / 1-1-0 (Grass) / 5-6-1 (Turf)
O/U: 6-8-0 (W-L) / 2-4-0 (Home) / 4-4-0 (Away) / 2-0-0 (Grass) / 4-8-0 (Turf) / 56.9 (Total)

While the Longhorns managed to win 10 games a year ago, they also struggled to cover the chalk by going an uninspiring 6-7-1 ATS while covering the spread three times at home and on the road. Texas also played under their O/U total odds an identical four times at home and on the road.

After splitting time under center during his freshman season in 2017, now, junior quarterback Sam Ehlinger is the unrivaled starter at Texas and that looks like a good thing seeing as how he completed 64.7 percent of his passes tossing 25 TD passes and just five interceptions a year ago while adding a phenomenal, team-high16 rushing touchdowns. Senior running back Tre Watson rushed for a team-high 786 yards, but just three scores while junior wide receiver Lil’Jordan (don’t you just love that name?) hauled in a team-high 86 passes for 1,176 yards and nine scores. Defensive back Caden Sterns recorded a team-high four interceptions as a true freshman last season. The best news is that all of Texas’ 2018 team leaders will return except Watson.

The Longhorns were good, but not great on offense a year ago as they finished 58th overall, 35th in passing, an uninspiring 91st in rushing and 47th in scoring (31.1 ppg).

On the defensive side of the ball, Texas was again, good, but not great in finishing 67th overall, a dismal 112th against the pass, a stellar 28th against the run and 57th in points allowed (25.9 ppg).

Outlook

I know the Longhorns are hoping to take another step forward to challenge Oklahoma for the Big 12 conference crown after beating the Sooners in the regular season a year ago, but I’m personally not fully convinced that Texas is going to leap-frog the Sooners – or improve on their 10-win record from last season.

First, the Longhorns need to replace a whopping nine starters on the defensive side of the ball, including the entire front seven and both starting cornerbacks. Herman will also have to find three new starters on the offensive line and pray that Ehlinger doesn’t go down for any significant period of time since there is no backup on the roster with any meaningful experience.

The Horns do have some seriously impressive talent at the wide receiver position and a pair of talented safeties in senior Brandon Jones and 2018 Freshman All-American Caden Sterns. Still though, with an almost completely new defense, and question marks along the offensive line, I’m expecting the Horns to have their hands completely full this coming season.

Home dates against LSU (10-3), Oklahoma State (7-6) and Oklahoma (12-2) look treacherous and road dates at West Virginia (8-4), TCU (7-6), Iowa State (8-5) and Baylor (7-6) don’t exactly look like ‘gimmes’. In spite of their success a year ago, I’m going with the Longhorns to suffer two losses at the very minimum in 2019 and quite possibly, three.

2016 Texas Longhorns Betting Predictions

Previous Betting News

No coach is on a hotter seat entering the 2016 college football season than Texas’ Charlie Strong. It’s quite simple: either the Horns win at least eight games this year or Strong will be out of work after just three seasons. UT is given a wins total of 8 for the regular season on college football lines, but the under is favored.

Taking a Closer Look at the 2016 Texas Longhorns Betting Predictions

Strong Won’t Be With Texas In 2017

A lot of powerful boosters didn’t want Strong hired in the first place; sadly, some because of racial reasons as Strong became the first black head football coach at Texas. There were some rumors this past offseason that Strong was interested in returning to Florida (he was a former University of Florida defensive coordinator before being named Louisville’s head coach) and taking the Miami (Fla.) job. But the two sides never talked and UM hired Mark Richt. If the Longhorns spiral into a 5-7 or 4-8 season, it would be hard to say that Strong is moving the UT program in the right direction after posting losing records his first two seasons. He would certainly put himself in position to be fired. UT boosters reportedly have eyes on Houston head coach Tom Herman to replace Strong. I don’t believe Strong is with UT next year. It just hasn’t been a good fit from the beginning, but Strong will be hired quickly somewhere else.

Offense Will Be More Exciting

The Texas defense has been pretty good in Strong’s two years but the offense hasn’t. Strong stripped offensive coordinators Shawn Watson and Joe Wickline of their play-calling duties after one game last season. Receivers coach Jay Norvell called plays for the final 11 games of Texas’ 5-7 season. So this offseason, Strong hired Tulsa’s Sterlin Gilbert as the new offensive coordinator. As Tulsa’s co-offensive coordinator, while also coaching the receivers and quarterbacks, Gilbert helped Tulsa rank No. 14 in total offense last season. Under the guidance of Gilbert at Eastern Illinois, quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo won the Walter Payton Award, the FCS equivalent of the Heisman Trophy, given to the nation’s best player. Garoppolo threw for 5,050 yards and 53 touchdowns in 2013 and during his two seasons under Gilbert’s guidance passed for 8,873 yards and 84 TDs. UT will play more up-tempo under Gilbert.

Shane Buechele Will Start Week 1 At QB

As of this writing, we still don’t know who will start at Texas at quarterback but it’s expected to be freshman Shane Buechele, who is battling senior Tyrone Swoopes. Prior to starting practice at the beginning of August, it looked like the job was Buechele’s in all but name. Swoopes largely floundered for two years in dysfunctional offenses. When Strong was recently asked he had a quarterback capable of winning the Big 12 (with no names mentioned), he responded by saying, “he’s going to be young,” but that he just needed to manage the game. That answer clearly was about Buechele. With running backs Chris Warren and D’Onta Foreman and receiver John Burt headlining the most talented offensive roster Strong has had at UT, Buechele won’t be hamstrung by the same disadvantages the Longhorns have had in recent years.

Texas Will Nearly Upset Notre Dame

Last year, the Longhorns went to Notre Dame to open the season and UT was pounded 38-3 by the No. 11 Irish. Malik Zaire threw for 313 yards and three touchdowns, and Notre Dame held Texas to 163 yards of total offense. Swoopes was 7-of 22-passing for 93 yards, and Jerrod Heard completed his only pass for 10 yards. Notre Dame apparently will use two QBs in this game. Both junior DeShone Kizer and senior Zaire will play against Texas in the season opener, Irish head coach Brian Kelly announced on Wednesday. While Zaire torched UT last year, he was hurt in the team’s second game and Kizer played very well in his place the rest of the year. Though Kelly had maintained he wanted to name a definitive starter, the decision became too difficult as fall camp progressed. Kelly said through 257 reps during fall camp, the two quarterbacks had combined for just two interceptions. I think the Irish will still win this game in Austin, but it will be very close and that will give Texas confidence.

Texas Will Go Under On 8-Win Total

I believe that Texas will win seven regular-season games but that it won’t be enough to save Strong’s job. I see Texas losing against Notre Dame, at Oklahoma State on Oct. 1 and vs. Oklahoma on Oct. 8, at Kansas State on Oct. 22 and home to Baylor on Oct. 29.
