When it comes to wagering on the Olympic Games, things can seem a little overwhelming, as there are just so many different sports to choose from. While some people stick to the sports that they know, it can be fun to take a shot on some that you may not be overly familiar with. One of the more exciting sports to watch is field hockey, and while it may not be as fast as its sibling sport on the ice, it is still a lot of fun to get into. Like many events in the Olympics, field hockey is split into men’s and women’s tournaments. If you are not that familiar with the sport, you might want to watch a few games before you start making wagers, but we can tell you that there are some countries that are more successful in field hockey than others. We can look back at past Olympic Games to get an idea of how things might play out in Tokyo. Let’s have a look at our Olympics update so you can get ready to bet against MyBookie’s Olympics betting odds.
Olympics Betting Preview – Hockey Analysis
Men’s Field Hockey
One thing that is common across the men’s and women’s events in field hockey is that the European countries tend to be more dominant than the rest, although we have seen some exceptions over the years. One of those surprises came in the last Olympics in 2016 when Argentina came away with the gold medal. Outside of the European nations, you also have Australia as a regular medalist in men’s field hockey, and they will come into these Olympics as the favorite to win gold.
The Aussies missed out on a medal at the last Olympic Games, snapping a run of 6 straight Olympics where they picked up a medal, with one of those being gold.
Belgium is also up among the favorites on the men’s side, which is no surprise at all. They took silver in 2016 and look set to make another run at the gold. The Netherlands, another field hockey powerhouse, is also among the favorites. They won gold in 1996 and 2000, and have been among the medals in recent Olympics, so certainly a good bet.
Women’s Field Hockey
As far as things go on the women’s side, there is a nation that has always been there or thereabouts at pretty much every Olympic Games. That would be the Netherlands, which has medaled in 7 of the 9 Olympics that have included field hockey. That has included winning the gold 3 times. They are in as an overwhelming favorite in Tokyo, but they will have some stiff competition along the way.
Australia won gold back in 2000, but they have not been among the medals since then. The feeling, though, is that they are going to have a strong team again this time around, so they are definitely worth taking a look at.
Argentina is another one that could well have a say on which country comes away with the gold. You also cannot count out Great Britain, as they won it in 2016. They are not high on the list of favorites, but you count them out at your own risk.
