Tokyo 2020 Olympics – Event Rundown: What can I bet on August 4th and 5th?

Olympic Men’s 400m Betting Preview

  • When: Thursday, August 5

Michael Norman is the man to watch at men’s 400m; however, that doesn’t mean much. He was priced as the man to beat at the 2019 World Championship as well, but he fell flat and went out from the semi-finals.

It remains to be seen why Norman performed so poorly last time out. However, it definitely makes him a far less appealing pick at the offered betting odds.

Instead, we like our chances with Steven Gardiner. He took advantage of the situation in Doha and seems set to win another major title in Japan.

Gardiner has shown exceptional form at the World Championship, and if he can carry over some of that to Japan, we don’t believe even Norman will manage to beat him.

An honorable mention goes to Michael Cherry, who posted 44.44s in the semi-finals on Monday. Although a very solid time, he was still short of Gardiner, who won the third semi-finals with a time of 44.14.

You could still make a strong case for Cherry as an outsider pick. However, one solid showing isn’t enough for us to favor him over Gardiner, who was heads and shoulders above everyone in Japan.

It’s also fair to mention Michael Norman, who has finished behind Gardiner in the semis with 44.52s and holds a personal best of 43.45s from 2019. It’s the fourth-fastest time in the history of outdoor men’s 400m, above Gardiner, who posted the fifth-fastest time of 43.48s in Doha.

Prediction: Steven Gardiner to win

Olympic Men’s Hammer Throw Betting Preview

  • When: Wednesday, August 4

Pawel Fajdek is the odds-on favorite to win the Tokyo 2020 Olympics men’s hammer throw, which seems fair. The Pole has recorded the three best throws of the year, reaching close to 83 meters; however, he has lost in both of his last two events, where he failed to exceed 80m.

Rudy Winkler joins him as the second favorite. He, alongside Fajdek, have four of the top eight throws of 2021; however, if we compare the two, Winkler has had a much more impressive season.

The American has made it to the finals of the 2019 World Championship, where he recorded his PB of 77.06m. He has since improved it by over 5 meters. After failing to reach the finals in Rio, Winkler is now – likely for the first time – a real challenger for the title.

Although both exceptional athletes, we are mostly interested in Wojciech Nowicki, who is priced as high as +400 to win the Olympics gold medal. The Pole has won bronze at the last three World Championships and added another bronze medal in Rio in 2016.

Nowicki is also – besides Mykhaylo Kokhan, Fajdek, and Winkler – one of the only four athletes with a +80m throw on the season, so it’s fair to say that the winner will come from those four. You could make a strong case for either of the four, but at +400, Wojciech Nowicki is an easy bet.

Prediction: Wojciech Nowicki to win
