Betting 2024 AFL Finals

The Australian Football League will be wrapping up the 2024 season soon, just as the NFL season is set to begin in the United States.

It’s now time for the AFL Finals to get going, and there will be four interesting matchups taking place during Week 1.

The rules for the AFL might be a bit different than those in the NFL, but there are still going to be the same betting options available.

Now is the time where teams must win to advance, and that is going to put some additional pressure on all of the teams taking the field.

Here is a look at each of the AFL Finals Week 1 matchups, and picks on how the games will turn out.

Writer’s Footy Picks for AFL Finals

Port Adelaide Power -11 vs. Geelong Cats

The first matchup to check out will be a battle between Port Adeleaid and the Geelong Cats, and this line is extremely interesting.

These teams finished right next to each other in the standings, but they have very different odds to win the title.

Port Adelaide has odds set at +450 to win the league title, while the Geelong Cats are sitting at +800.

Injuries are going to impact Geelong in this game, and that’s a reason for the spread being so large.

Taking the points and backing Geelong is the right bet to make, but it will be Port Adelaide that moves on to the next round.

Western Bulldogs -5 vs. Hawthorn Hawks

The AFL Finals Week 1 game with the tightest spread is this battle between the Western Bulldogs and Hawthorn Hawks.

Western will only need to win by at least six points to cover the spread, and Hawthorn wants to keep it much closer than that.

This should be a game in which both teams are able to get some big stops, and that is going to keep the game tight throughout.

Look for Western to break through late in the game, and they will cover the small spread in this matchup.

Sydney Swans -7.5 vs. GWS Giants

The winner of the matchup between Sydney and GWS is expected to be the clear favorite to win the league title this season.

Both these teams have been great all season long, and that is going to create an interesting betting opportunity.

The GWS Giants are looking to pull off a stunning upset of their rival in this one, and they are actually talented enough to get that done.

It’s just too hard to fully trust them though, and taking the Syndey Swans to win and cover -7.5 is the way to go.

Brisbane Lions -23.5 vs. Carlton Blues

It was a rough season for the Carlton Blues, but they were able to sneak into the finals by being the eighth seed in the league standings.

Carlton is getting 23.5 points ahead of this matchup, and that shows that they are not very well respected.

Brisbane hasn’t exactly been dominant this season, but they will be good enough to win this game over Carlton.

It’s just too hard to see them winning by at least 24, and this is another opportunity to take the points.

The top-seeded Port Adelaide Power and second-seeded Brisbane Lions highlight the top title contenders after going an identical 14-3 in the regular season. Let’s take a closer look at the upcoming matches so you can make your bets against their AFL odds.

Online Australian Football Betting Predictions – AFL Finals Week 1

Port Adelaide Power (14-3-0) vs Geelong Cats (12-5-0)

When: Thursday, October 1, 220 at 4:40 AM
Where: Adelaide Oval
TV: FOX

Port Adelaide finished atop the AFL ladder with 56 points while Geelong finished in fourth place with 48 points. Port Adelaide has won each of their last five matches while Geelong went 4-1 over their last five.

While the Cats will put up a real fight in this affair Port Adelaide is just too good at both ends of the field. The Power have gone wire-to-wire in first place this season and have a superior defense that averaged 56.2 tackles per game to Geelong’s 52.2 per contest.

Ryan Burton, Tom Clurey and Zak Butters are in for this matchup while Boyd Woodcock, Jarrod Lienert and  Riley Bonner have all been omitted for Port Adelaide. Rhys Stanley and Tom Atkins are in for Geelong while Esava Ratugolea and Jack Steven are out for the Cats.

“It certainly gives you confidence that over the whole season we have earned the right to be on top,” Hinkley said. “Our team has been a really consistent team right through this season … we’re in a pretty good space and we have built to play finals footy. So far, I’m really proud of what the boys have been able to do … we’re really good team, we’re a strong team, we’re very capable.”

The Cats have won just four of 15 finals and lost five of their last six opening finals heading in Thursday night’s Qualifying Final against Port Adelaide.

Brisbane Lions (14-3-0) vs Richmond Tigers (12-4-1)

When: Friday, October 2, 2020 at 4:50 AM
Where: Gabba, Brisbane
TV: FOX

The Lions finished in second place in the AFL Ladder with 56 points while scoring 1,184 points and allowing 948 points defensively. Richmond finished third in the ladder with 50 points while scoring 1,135 points and allowing just 874 points to finish second in points allowed. Both teams have won five straight heading into this affair. While the Tigers have the slightly better defense in this clash, Brisbane leads in disposals, clearances and tackles and free kicks. Take the favored Lions to get it done in this one to secure their fourth Preliminary final in four years.

Pick: Brisbane 75 Richmond 68

St Kilda Saints (10-7-0) vs Western Bulldogs (10-7-0)

When: Saturday October 3, 2020 at 1:40 AM
Where: Gabba, Brisbane
TV: FOX

St Kilda finished in sixth place in the ladder with 40 points while Western finished in seventh place with an identical 40 points. While St Kilda dropped two of their final five matches, Western won their final three games and four of five overall to close out the regular season. Western also has the edge in disposals (5,281-4,963), free kicks and tackles (862-833). More importantly, the Bulldogs have gotten hot at just the right time. While St Kilda took out Western in Round 2 this season, I’m going with the Bulldogs to get it done this time around despite being on the road.

Pick: Western 80 St Kilda 72

West Coast Eagles (12-5-0) vs Collingwood Magpies (9-7-1)

When: Saturday October 3, 2020 at 5:10 AM
Where: Optus Stadium
TV: FOX

West Coast finished the regular season in fifth place in the AFL ladder with 48 points while Collingwood got the eight and final spot in the postseason by finishing eighth with 38 points. The Eagles closed out the regular season by winning two straight and three of four while Collingwood dropped two of their last three. Still, the Magpies finished with more disposals, clearances and tackles and I believe the Eagles are ripe for the upset. West Coast scored 1,095 points this season while allowing 936 points. Collingwood scored 965 points, but finished a stellar third in points allowed with 881 points conceded. Defense rules the day in this one as Collingwood gets the huge upset.

Pick: Collingwood 77 West Coast 72

Previous Betting News

With the 2020 AFL Premiership season heading into its opening slate of postseason action as the AFL Finals get underway starting on Thursday, October 1, it’s time to find out which teams look like they’ll advance out of the elimination round to reach the semifinals. With a quartet of elimination matchups on the docket, let’s find out where the best betting value lies so you can make your bets against their AFL odds.

2020 AFL Finals Series | Qualifiers

Port Adelaide Power (14-3) Vs Geelong Cats (12-5)

When: Thursday, Oct. 1, 2020 at 7:10 PM
Where: Adelaide Oval

Port Adelaide has won five straight, but their last loss was an embarrassing 91-31 smackdown against Geelong on August 14. The Cats have won four of five and so thoroughly dominated Port Adelaide in their last meeting, I’m thinking another upset is in the books for this elimination contest, though it wouldn’t be much of an upset if you witnessed the last meeting between these two title hopefuls. I’m expecting Geelong forward Tom Hawkins and midfielder Sam Menegola to lead the way to victory in this one.

Pick: Geelong 69 Port Adelaide 63

Brisbane Lions (14-3) Vs Richmond Cats (12-4-1)

When: Friday, Oct. 2, 2020 at 7:50 PM
Where: Gabba, Brisbane

Despite finishing third in the AFL ladder, Richmond is actually the prohibitive favorite to win this year’s AFL Championship. While both of these title hopefuls have won each of their last five matches, Richmond pounded Brisbane unmercifully in their 82-41 rout on August 4 one year after taming the Lions 112-65 in September of 2019. Richmond forward Tom Lynch and defender Jayden Short will star in this one while leading the Cats to the emphatic win!

Pick: Richmond 77 Brisbane 69

St. Kilda Saints (10-7) Vs Western Bulldogs (10-7)

When: Saturday, Oct. 3, 2020 at 4:40 PM
Where: Gabba, Brisbane

While Western has won three straight and four of their last five, the Bulldogs were also on the wrong end of a stunning 88-49 smackdown at the hands of St. Kilda the last time these two teams met on June 14. Not only that, but St. Kilda also overpowered Western in 2019, winning 116-89 and now, the Saints look poised to make it three straight. The Saints have won two of their last three and will have the two best players on the field in forward Dan Butler and defender Nick Coffield. These teams may have identical records, but St. Kilda is undeniably the better team at both ends of the field.

Pick: St. Kilda 82 Western 70

West Coast Eagles (12-5) Vs Collingwood Magpies (9-7-1)

When: Saturday, Oct. 3, 2020 at 6:10 PM
Where: Optus Stadium

West Coast has won three of their last four matches while Collingwood hits the postseason having lost two of their last three. More importantly, the eagles soared to an emphatic 111-45 smackdown win over the Magpies when they last met on July 26 and I just don’t expect Collingwood to get past a more explosive and cohesive West Coast squad that has legitimate championship hopes entering the postseason. The Eagles will have the three best players on the field in this one as forward Josh Kennedy, midfielder Andrew Gaff and defender Brad Sheppard all lead the way to victory in this one!

Pick: West Coast 62 Collingwood 45
