Betting AFL Round 16
The AFL season is inching toward the last few weeks of the regular season.
All the teams want to secure their spot in the ladder. Essendon is facing a key point of the year.
The Bombers are in third place in the standings, but have lost two of their past three matches.
Essendon will have an important match against Geelong, which would like to emerge from the pack.
Every point on the ladder is at a premium as teams scramble to secure their finals positions.
Essendon, clinging to a precarious third place but reeling from recent losses, faces a defining moment. But they’re not alone!
Here’s a look at the key matches from Round 16.
Essendon is small favorite over Geelong
The Bombers got a much-needed confidence boost last week.
Essendon was on the front foot from a 30-point win over the West Coast.
That was the most points the Bombers had scored in a match since Round 10.
It remains to be seen if Essendon will be able to maintain that level of play against other top teams.
The Bombers received a strong performance from Jake Stringer last week, who scored a team-high five goals.
Geelong has seen a downturn over the past few weeks.
The Cats have lost by 63 and 30 points during their previous two matches.
Geelong has lost six of their previous seven matches.
Essendon is a -125 favorite in this match, while Geelong is even money.
The over/under has been set at 167.5 points.
Back the Bombers to grab a narrow win in this match.
Round 16 AFL Pick: Essendon
Can Port Adelaide Win as Short Underdogs?
Suspensions and injuries have made life difficult on the Power, who are still in eighth place in the standings.
Port Adelaide has lost three straight matches. The Power have failed to score more than 73 points in all three contests.
If Port Adelaide wants to make a run at the Grand Final, the Power will need to turn things around against lowly Saint Kiilda.
The Saints are in 14th place, but are -125 favorites in this match to beat the Power.
The Power are +102 and the over/under has been set at 160.5 points.
Saint Kilida has a two-match winning streak stopped with a 20-point loss to Brisbane last week.
Back the Power to bounce back with a win.

AFL Round 16 Betting Analysis for the Top Games of the Week
Previous Betting News
What a crazy weekend AFL Round 15 was. Melbourne topped Brisbane in a battle of two teams tied atop the ladder, and Freemantle missed out on their opportunity to stay in the #1 seed with an upset loss to Carlton. Geelong and Sydney also picked up wins as part of a huge triple-header on Saturday.
Now that everyone has had some time to catch their breath, it’s on to the Round 16 games. It’s looking like a much calmer weekend ahead, but sometimes those are the ones that are the toughest AFL Betting Odds to predict.
Top AFL Round 16 Betting Games for the Week
Western Bulldogs vs Brisbane Lions (-17.5), Thursday 5:20 AM ET
Melbourne coach Chris Fagan called last week’s matchup with Brisbane a ‘toughness test,’ and wow, did the Lions fail in a 64-point loss. The important part for Brisbane is to scratch the memory of that game ASAP, as they are still just a game out of the top spot and also in quite a logjam of one of four teams that are 10-4.
The -17.5 point spread seems like a hefty one for a team that was thoroughly dominated last weekend. The Bulldogs have also won five of their last six to get to 8-6 on the year, right on the cusp of the #8 seed.
St. Kilda Saints vs Carlton Blues (-9.5), Friday 5:50 AM ET
The battle to get into the top eight is going to be a tight one, likely from here until the end of the season, as one game separates seeds 6-10. The Saints are right in that mix as they try to rebound from last week’s loss to Sydney.
Carlton did their part last weekend, taking down a Freemantle team that was tied for the best record in the AFL. This is a great opportunity for the Blues to finally put a winning streak together after alternating victories and defeats in the last four games. The Saints have dropped three in a row, including a 35-point loss to Essendon, one of the worst teams in the league.
Collingwood Magpies vs Gold Coast Suns (-3.5), Saturday 5:25 AM ET
Gold Coast is right on the outside, looking in at a top-eight spot, currently in 11th at 7-7 but also just a game back from a three-team logjam at 8-6. That makes the Saturday game a must-win for the Suns, especially after a harrowing 93-91 loss to Port Adelaide last weekend.
The Pies have some value here as well, winners of five straight, including last weekend when they were up by five goals at one point against the Giants. Collingwood also posted a 115-90 win over Gold Coast back on April 30th.
Hawthorn Hawks vs Gws Giants (-11.5), Sunday 1:20 AM ET
As stated, Round 16 does not feature the highly competitive matchups we saw last weekend. Geelong is a -65.5 favorite against North Melbourne, for example, and Richmond is listed at -38.5 in the AFL betting odds against West Coast.
Hawthorn and Gws should be a close game mostly because they are both 4-10 on the season – having their shares of struggles. The Hawks are 0-6 at Giants Stadium, including in the hub during the COVID season of 2020.
