2024 Australian Open Odds & Picks: Second Round Games to Bet

The Australian Open moves into the second round Tuesday night following three days of first-round action with minimal surprises. Most of the top seeds advanced with a few exceptions, including two-time Australian Open winner Naomi Osaka and 15th seed Veronika Kudermetova in the women’s draw and 18th seed Nicolas Jarry in the men’s draw. Both Andrey Rublev and Taylor Fritz survived five-set scares in the men’s draw. A few top-20 players are out in the women’s draw, including Ekaterina Alexandrova, Marketa Vondrousova, and Liudmila Samsonova.

Second round: Wednesday, January 17th – Thursday, January 18th, 2024
Melbourne Park, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia

First-Round Recap

The top seeds in both the men’s and women’s draws moved on to the second round with little trouble. Defending Australian Open women’s champion Aryna Sabalenka beat Ella Seidel 6-0, 6-1, while Coco Gauff, 2023 US Open champion, and Iga Swiatek, world No. 1, also won their first-round matches in straight sets. Caroline Wozniacki, who returned late last year and made the Round of 16 at the US Open, beat 20th-seed Magda Linette.

Andy Murray is among the more notable names out early in the men’s draw. Thomas Etcheverry beat Murray in straight sets 6-4, 6-2, 6-2. Nicolas Jarry, the 18th seed, also lost his opening round match. Novak Djokovic, who has the shortest odds to win the Australian Open, beat Dino Prizmic 6-2, 7-6 (5), 6-3, 6-4.

Novak Djokovic, the overwhelming betting favorite to repeat as champion at the Australian Open, won his first-round match but not without exerting a little more effort than expected. He beat Croatian qualifier Dino Prizmic 6-2, 6-7 (5), 6-3, 6-4 and later said Prizmic reminded him of himself as a young player. Taylor Fritz, the 12th seed, also faced some trouble in his first-round match, beating Facundo Diaz Acosta 4-6, 6-3, 3-6, 6-2, 6-4. Four Australians are into the second round in the men’s draw, all trying to become the first Aussie male champion since Mark Edmonson in 1976.

In addition to Osaka and Kudermetova, top-20 seeds Marketa Vondrousova, Liudmila Samsonova, and Ekaterina Alexandrov are out in the women’s draw, which is shaping up to be a bit more unpredictable than the men’s. The top-six seeds all won their matches in straight sets.

Second-Round Betting Previews

Marcos Giron (+225) vs. Jack Draper (-350)

Jack Draper and Marcos Giron meet for the first time in their careers in the second round of the 2024 Australian Open. Giron is into the second round in Australia for the first time in his career after losing his first-round match in each of the prior four years, while Draper is also into the second round for the first time.

Draper is 4-1 this season after reaching the final in Adelaide and looks to be building off of a strong finish to the 2023 season. The 23-year-old is also a better hard court player, with a record of 31-12 on the surface last season compared to Giron’s 22-20 record on the surface in 2023.

Dan Evans (+100) vs. Lorenzo Sonego (-130)

Lorenzo Sonego is a good bet to advance to the third round, especially at -130 odds. He’s 2-0 in his career against Evans and has won both matches on hard court. Evans, however, has a better career record on outdoor hard courts (220-129 compared to 65-67). This is among the final first-round matches to be played in Melbourne.

Emma Raducanu (-375) vs. Shelby Rogers (+240)

If you’re looking for a strong betting underdog pick there’s few better options than Shelby Rogers over Emma Raducanu. This is one of the last first-round matches to be played early Tuesday morning. Raducanu beat Rogers 6-2, 6-1 in their lone match at the 2021 US Open, but that was somewhat of an anomaly as she won the grand slam that year but hasn’t been good at all since – she comes into this match ranked 296th in the world and dealt with nagging injuries all last season.

Rogers is a tough opponent for Raducanu in her first grand slam match of the season as she has experience on her side and has had some success in Australia, reaching the Round of 16 in 2021. She’s also 24-17 on outdoor hard courts in the last two seasons, whereas Raducanu is 15-15.

Felix Auger-Aliassime (-850) vs. Hugo Grenier (+400)

If there’s any match where bettors can take advantage of a high-value underdog in the second round it’s Felix Auger-Aliassime vs. Hugo Grenier. Auger-Aliassime is coming off of a disappointing season in which he struggled at grand slams and played the longest match of his career – 4 hours and 59 minutes – against Dominic Thiem in the first round, beating him in five sets. Grenier is also at his best on hard courts, with a career 186-93 record, including 40-23 dating back to the 2022 season.

Jiri Lehecka (-280) vs. Alex Michelsen (+180)

While there’s not a ton of value in taking the favorite here, it certainly feels like a sure thing for Jiri Lehecka to move into the third round. Alex Michelsen is a highly-touted 19-year-old American with a career 49-23 record on hard courts and is coming off of an impressive win over Aussie James McCabe in the first round, but is playing in just his second grand slam and lacks experience against higher-quality opponents – he’s just 8-10 in singles in ATP Tour events. Lehecka, a quarter-finalist in last year’s Australian Open, is coming off of his first career ATP tournament win at the Adelaide International.

Ons Jabeur (-115) vs. Mirra Andreeva (-115)

This is undeniably the most anticipated match in either draw in the second round and probably a match-up that should have been saved for later in the draw. Ons Jabeur, the sixth seed, is chasing her first grand slam title after being a runner-up three times. Mirra Andreeva, meanwhile, is just 16 years old and has already had decent success on the WTA Tour, breaking into the top-50 last season and reaching her first WTA quarter-final at the Brisbane International two weeks ago.

ATP & WTA Lines: 2023 Australian Open Predictions & Betting Opportunities for Second Round

The 2023 Australian Open is nearly done with the first round but did have some hiccups in the opening days. Play was temporarily suspended on Day 2 as temperatures reached 35 degrees Celsius/95 degrees Fahrenheit. As a rule, play on the outside courts was suspended and a controversy ensued after a ball girl passed out due to the extreme conditions.

Tennis Australia also banned flags from Russia and Belarus after fans displayed a Russian flag during a match involving Ukrainian Kateryna Baindi and Russian Kamilla Rakhimova. Russian and Belarusian players are not allowed by ATP/WTA rules to play under their national flag during the conflict in Ukraine.

On the court, the top seeds cruised in the first two days, with no players seeded 1-16 losing as of Monday night. Seeded players in the women’s draw started 17-3, while the men were 16-3 to kick off the first Grand Slam of the season. Let’s take a look at a few Australian Open Betting opportunities at MyBookie Second Round.

Botic Van de Zandschulp -121

After winning in four sets in the opener, No. 32 seed, Botic Van de Zandschulp will face fellow Dutchman Tallon Griekspoor in the second round. Griekspoor knocked off lucky loser Pavol Kotov in straight sets in his opener. The two Dutch players are separated by 30 spots in the World Rankings, and Van de Zandschulp won their only professional meeting in straight sets last summer in Washington, D.C.

Van de Zandschulp had a great run in four straight slams from the 2021 U.S. Open through 2022 Wimbledon. He reached the Quarterfinals in the U.S. Open, the third round at the Australian and French Opens last year, and the fourth round at Wimbledon. Meanwhile, Griekspoor has never been past the second round at a slam, making Van de Zandschulp the pick for this matchup.

Marton Fucsovics -102

Both Marton Fucsovics and Lloyd Harris won 5-setters in the opener, with Harris knocking off 17 seed Lorenzo Musetti in a tiebreak. Fucsovics has reached the fourth round at the Australian Open twice and reached the Quarterfinals at Wimbledon in 2021. Harris had only made it past the first round once in Melbourne in four tries before this week and is ranked 186th, more than 100 spots behind his Hungarian opponent.

Fucsovics holds a 3-2 career advantage over Harris, including a pair of wins in 2022. The hard court win last year in Doha was in straight sets, and Harris last won outdoors against Fucsovics in 2019. With the odds close, take the experience and success of Fucsovics in this matchup.

Petra Kvitova -186

Petra Kvitova, the No. 15 seed, won her first-round match 7-6, 6-2. On Tuesday, she will face Ukrainian Anhelina Kalinina, who won 6-3, 6-1 in the opener. The Czech native reached the finals at Melbourne in 2019 and has two Wimbledon championships on her resume. Kvitova is 9-3 in her last 12-second round grand slam matches and 5-4 in this round in Australia.

Kalinina has never been past the second round in a grand slam, with six losses at this stage. These two have never met, and as a southpaw with a big serve, Kvitova should keep Kalinina off balance for the match as she advances to the third round.

Danielle Collins -170

Seeded No. 13, American Danielle Collins had to go deep to win her first-round match, 7-5, 6-7, 6-4 as Anna Kalinskaya didn’t make it easy on her. In the second round, she will face Karolina Muchova, who cruised to a 6-2, 6-1 win in her opener.

Collins beat Iga Swiatek in the semifinals last year at Melbourne Park before falling to No. 1 Ash Barty in the finals. Both of her grand slam semifinal runs have been at the Australian Open, where she consistently plays her best tennis.

Muchova reached the semis in 2021 but missed most of last year with injury. These two have never met and this match may go the distance but look for Collins, a better baseline player on the hard courts, to prevail.

2023 Australian Open Predictions & Betting Opportunities for the Week | ATP Odds & Picks

Rain and high temperatures are wreaking havoc on the first Grand Slam of the season. The Australian Open had to push a pause on outdoor play on Tuesday, and that created a first-round backlog that carried into Day 3. With roofs on three courts, play did continue with defending champion and top seed Rafael Nadal falling to American MacKenzie McDonald in straight sets.

The delays will have an impact on the schedule and also on the betting. Some parts of the draws are in different stages, varying from the first round to the third round. Some players are going to lose days off between matches and have to play on consecutive days, once the weather cooperates.

Eventually, this will give a boost to the players at peak fitness and those with experience getting through long grand slams will have an advantage. Let’s take a look at some of the Australian Open Betting Lines for matches currently scheduled for Day 4.

JJ Wolf -177

American J.J. Wolf is favored in the second round against No. 23 seed Diego Schwartzman. These two have never met and both won in four sets in the opening round, playing in blistering conditions. Schwartzman faced 14 break points against a qualifier and had to play more than four hours to get to the second round.

Wolf looked more comfortable in his win over Australian Jordan Thompson. This is the first time in the main draw at Melbourne Park for Wolf, but he’s had success on the hard courts, while Schwartzman has had the most success on clay. This will be a hard-fought match, but Wolf is the better hard court player, and the seeding won’t matter at all.

Ben Shelton -145

A young American playing in his second Grand Slam, Ben Shelton is favored to move onto the third round as he faces qualifier, Nicolas Jarry. The 2022 NCAA singles champion at the University of Florida, Shelton turned pro last summer and beat Casper Ruud to reach the third round of the Cincinnati Masters. A 20-year-old with a serve that tops 130 mph, Shelton won his first-round match in five sets and should be settled in as he takes the court in the second round.

Jarry is a 27-year-old qualifier who upset No. 27 Miomir Kecmanovic in the first round in straight sets. Ranked in the 130’s, Jarry has qualified for just two slams since 2019, has never been past the second round in 11 slams, and is 0-2 in the second round. This match is a big opportunity for Shelton and could set up an All-American third-round match with No. 8 Taylor Fritz.

Top Quarter Men’s Bracket Futures

With Nadal’s loss, the top quarter of the draw is now completely wide open. Nadal was third in odds to win the entire tournament at +750, and he’s won this tournament twice, including last year.

Now the top part of the bracket is wide open, with only two players in the top section with experience in a grand slam semifinal. No. 16 Frances Tiafoe and No. 18 Karen Khachanov both reached the semifinals at the 2022 U.S. Open. With Nadal out, they are the top seeds in the section and in line to play in the third round.

The other section of the top quadrant includes No. 7 Daniil Medvedev, the 2021 U.S. Open winner and a two-time finalist in Melbourne. Medvedev is the second-best betting favorite to win it all, behind Novak Djokovic. The biggest threat to Medvedev in his section is No. 10 Hubert Hurkacz, while seeded players Sebastian Korda and Denis Shapovalov are both dangerous.

The Nadal loss opens up more betting opportunities on futures bets for players like Tiafoe, Khachanov, and even McDonald, who pulled off the upset of a legend on Tuesday.

Wednesday, Jan. 22nd

Belinda Bencic vs Jelena Ostapenko

2020 Australian Open Odds: Ostapenko +144 / Bencic -204

Bencic handled Anna Karolina Schmiedlova 6-3, 7-5 in her first-round match. She battles a much tougher opponent in Jelena Ostapenko on Thursday. Ostapenko had no trouble versus Liudmilla Samsonova. Give Jelena a shot to upset Belinda.

Tennis Betting Pick: Jelena Ostapenko

Donna Vekic vs Alize Cornet

2020 Australian Open Odds: Cornet +156 / Vekic -222

19-seed Donna Vekic beat Maria Sharapova with no issues. Alize Cornet struggled versus Monica Niculescu. Vekic should move on to Round 3.

Tennis Betting Pick: Donna Vekic

Catherine Bellis vs Karolina Muchova

2020 Australian Open Odds: Muchova -156 / Bellis +112

This should be one of the most competitive matchups in Round 2. In Round 1, Catherine Bellis dominated Tatjana Maria 6-0, 6-2. Bellis is another young USA player that’s making a mark on the women’s side. Her opponent, Karolina Muchova, required 4 sets to get by Kirsten Flipkens. Bellis gets the nod.

Tennis Betting Pick: Catherine Bellis

Danielle Collins vs Yulia Putintseva

2020 Australian Open Odds: Putintseva +161 / Collins -232

Collins lost the second set in her first-round victory over Vitalia Diatchenko. Yulia Putintseva showed she could have a deep run at the Australian Open with her first-round win. She beat Su-Wei Hsieh 6-1, 6-3. Last year, Putintseva marched to the third round at the U.S. Open. She upset Naomi Osaka in Round 1 at Wimbledon. Yulia can play.

Tennis Betting Pick: Yulia Putintseva

Alexander Zverev vs Egor Gerasimov

2020 Australian Open Odds: Zverev -588 / Gerasimov +348

Will Alexander Zverev step it up and win a major title? Probably not at the 2020 Australian Open. But Egor Gerasimov won’t beat him. Gerasimov battled Casper Ruud for 7 sets before knocking out that opponent. Zverev faces a tired underdog on Thursday.

Tennis Betting Pick: Alexander Zverev

Nick Kyrgios vs Gilles Simon

2020 Australian Open Odds: Simon +292 / Kyrgios -476

In Round 1, Lorenzo Sonego made it tough on Nick Kyrgios. The favored Australian tennis player required 7 sets to knock out Sonego. Simon is rested after an easy 3-set victory over Pueblo Cuevas. Back the dog.

Tennis Betting Pick: Gilles Simon

Gael Monfils vs Ivo Karlovic

2020 Australian Open Odds: Karlovic +245 / Monfils -370

33-year-old Gael Monfils went about his business in a 6-1, 6-4, 6-2 win over Yen-Sun Lu. Monfils battles 40-year-old Ivo Karlovic on Thursday. Karlovic required 5 sets before he won his first-round match. Gael should beat Karlovic.

Tennis Betting Pick: Gael Monfils

Jaume Munar vs Alexei Popyrin

2020 Australian Open Odds: Popyrin -277 / Munar +189

Facing favored Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, Alexei Popyrin didn’t blink. He frustrated Tsonga enough that the chalk retired before the fourth set. Popyrin should handle Munar in 3 to 4 sets on Jan. 23.

Tennis Betting Pick: Alexei Popyrin
