You cannot talk about potential winners of the opening race of the FE season without mentioning the defending champion. De Vries finished 11^th overall in his first season with Formula E, so there were not a ton of expectations on his shoulders heading into the new season. He signaled his intent by winning under the lights in Diriyah in the first even night race. He didn’t fare so well in the 2^nd of the 2 races, finishing 9^th in that one. De Vries only had 1 more win on the season, but managed to rack up enough points, including 2 more podium finishes, to lead what was a very closely packed driver standings board. With a win on this track already, he does deserve to be considered one of the favorites.
