The opening round of the 2023 Formula-E season is in the books, with Jake Dennis getting the new season off to a winning start. There is little time to sit back and celebrate, though, as Round 2 is upon us, with the drivers heading to Diriyah this weekend for Round 2 and 3. Yes, it’s a doubleheader weekend, with two races set to go on Friday and Saturday. The question here is whether the opening race of the season in Mexico City set the tone for the upcoming season or whether we are going to see some different drivers hit the podium this weekend. How it plays out remains to be seen, but let’s look at some of the drivers who might make a run for the checkered flag in Diriyah this weekend so you can bet against their Formula E Odds.
Formula E Betting Preview for the 2023 Diriyah E-Prix Race
Lucas Di Grassi
With all that has gone on in Formula-E over the past few years, it might be easy to forget that Di Grassi is a former champion, winning it all in the 2016-17 season. He has somewhat slid under the radar since that win, getting progressively worse each year until bouncing back a bit with a 5th place overall finish last season. That might well be the sign of a resurgence for Di Grassi, as he looked good in Round 1, landing on the podium in Mexico City. He has had a couple of podium finishes in Diriyah in the past, so it’s not too hard to imagine him having another good weekend here.
Stoffel Vandoorne
The defending Formula-E World Champion found out rather quickly that repeating is not going to be an easy task. Vandoorne was well off the pace in Round 1, finishing 10th overall in Mexico City. You do have to wonder of making the move from Mercedes to Penske in the offseason is going to have an impact or whether we are simply overreacting to a poor showing in one race. We might get a better idea of how things look for the reigning champion after this weekend. He has not won this race before, but he has been on the podium a couple of times.
Jake Dennis
After a great opening season in Formula-E, where he finished 3rd overall, Dennis took a bit of a backward step last year, finishing 6th overall in what he will have seen as a disappointing showing. Dennis only had 1 win last season, a total that he has already matched after taking the checkered flag in Mexico City in Round 1. He did start last season well, too, taking a 3rd place finish in Diriyah in the opening race of 2022, so every reason to believe that he might be able to build on a strong start this year.
Mitch Evans
Evans is coming off his best performance in Formula-E after finishing 2nd in the driver standings in 2022. He actually got off to a pretty slow start, stumbling through the opening 3 races of the season before settling into a very nice groove. With that in mind, we probably shouldn’t be too concerned with his 8th place finish in Mexico City in Round 1. Still, if he is serious about mounting a serious challenge this season, he needs to get moving in Diriyah.
