The 2024 IndyCar season is currently 7 races in. There is an exciting battle happening at the top of the driver standings.
Right now, there are just 11 points separating the top 3 drivers, with the gap behind those guys pretty far from being impossible.

My Grand Prix of Monterey Analysis
If you haven’t been keeping up with IndyCar recently, I can tell you that this type of race is not new. It’s possible that the competition will get even closer as we follow the schedule.
This weekend, the action continues with the Firestone Grand Prix of Monterey, which should be another great race. Let’s look at the IndyCar odds and some of the guys that should be in the hunt.
^Will Power
It has been an interesting season for Power, who now sits atop the driver standings despite being docked points after a software issue overlooked by Team Penske affected all the drivers in their stable.
Despite facing setbacks, Power did not let it bring him down. He recently achieved his first win of the season at the Road America track.
He came in second place three times in the first 7 races of the season, earning him the top position.
Furthermore, he looks to be a good bet to be in the hunt this weekend, as he has finished in the top 4 in each of the last 2 seasons in this race.
^Alex Palou
The driver who has won the championship in 2 of the last 3 seasons is hot on the heels of the leader, sitting just 5 points back of Power at the top of the standings.
Palou has a pair of wins this season, but only 1 of them counted towards the championship standings, with the other coming in the Thermal Challenge, which was not an official race.
He has cooled off over the last 3 races, failing to land on the podium in any of them. That might well change this weekend, though, as he has been a podium finisher in this race in each of the last 3 seasons.

Scott Dixon
Dixon is one of the best drivers to have ever graced this sport, and he is once again up among the leaders after the first 7 races of the season.
After a win in Detroit, which was his second of the season, Dixon put in a poor showing in the Road America race, which dropped him down to 3rd in the overall standings, albeit just 11 points off the pace being set by Power.
Given what we know about Dixon, you can bet that he will not let that poor run stick with him. He won this race last year, so could this be a bounce back run?
^Pato O’Ward
After going through all the 2023 season without a win, O’Ward got this season off to a perfect start with a win in St. Petersburg.
That has proven to be the high point for him thus far, as he is still looking for his second win of the 2024 season.
O’Ward has finished in the top 10 in each of his last 3 races, including a 2nd place run at the Indianapolis 500, but he needs a win to get back into the championship hunt. He finished in the top 10 in each of the last 3 seasons in Monterey.

2023 Grand Prix of Monterey
This weekend will see the final race of the IndyCar season, but it will be something of an anti-climactic affair, as the championship has already been won. Alex Palou took the checkered flag in Portland last weekend, clinching his 2nd championship and rendering this weekend’s race meaningless. That said, there is still prize money to be won, and the other drivers will be looking to finish the season in as high a position as possible. In short, this is still a race where IndyCar betting opportunities abound, and it may actually be trickier than usual. Will Palou take his foot off the gas now that he is the champion, or will he look to win again and put an exclamation point on his season? It’s tough to know how this might play out, but let’s look at the drivers sure tone in the hunt on Sunday.

Alex Palou
As we just said, the pressure is off Palou, which could end up playing out in a couple of different ways. He may want to go all out to get another win and pad his stats, or he could take it a little easier knowing that he is already the champion. I don’t see a driver as good as Palou is doing anything else than going for the win, so he has to be seen as the favorite this weekend. Palou already has 5 wins this season, by far his best showing, and when you consider that he won this race in 2022, he has to be the guy you look at first when it comes time to wager on this race.
Scott Dixon
You have to give some mad props to Dixon, as he extended the championship race longer than a lot of us thought it would go. Palou looked to have things all locked up a few weeks ago, but when he cooled off a little, Dixon stepped up and started winning races. He had won 2 in a row heading into Portland, and while he had another solid run, he had to settle for a 3rd place finish in that one. The Laguna Seca track is one where Dixon has not had a ton of success, so even taking him to finish in the top 4 seems like a risky bet.
Josef Newgarden
Newgarden is another driver that looked to be in the championship race after winning a doubleheader in Iowa a month or so ago. That threat did not last long, though, as he failed to build on that big weekend. In fact, Newgarden has now delivered back-to-back races where he finished outside the top 20 and is finishing the season with a whimper instead of a bang. He did finish 2nd in this race in 2022, so perhaps he can deliver something special on Sunday now that the pressure is off.
Another driver that you may want to consider this weekend, albeit with a risky bet, is Colton Herta. He is having a disappointing season, to be sure, but he also won on this track in back-to-back seasons. With the championship decided, it may just open the door for a driver to deliver a surprise finish to the season, so why not Herta?
I have read enough, I need to place my bet now. What to do?
