Last weekend, we were treated to one of the most iconic races in sports with the running of the 108th Indianapolis 500.
It was an exciting race that ended with Josef Newgarden winning for the second straight year.

My Detroit Grand Prix Analysis
Given all that has happened with Newgarden and his team in the early part of the season, it was a win that he needed more than most, as it helped make up the championship points he had stripped due to a software issue in his car, as well as in the vehicles of other team members. He is still well off the pace down in 7th place, but things look a whole lot brighter than they did before the big race. He will certainly be among the favorites for the Detroit Grand Prix this weekend, but let’s look at a few other drivers sure to be in the hunt.
^Alex Palou
Palou has been one of the best in IndyCar for the last few years, coming in as the defending champion and looking for his 3rd championship win in 4 years. To this point, you have to say that things are going well, as he is once again back on top of the driver standings. It’s tight at the top, though, as he is tied with Scott Dixon and just 6 points ahead of the 3rd place driver. He will be looking for a little bit of breathing space this weekend in Detroit, which he can get with a win, or perhaps even a podium finish. He won this race in 2023, so every reason to believe he can repeat that result.
^Scott Dixon
The last time that Dixon won the World Championship was in 2020, which was his 6th such victory, making him one of the best that IndyCar has ever seen. While Dixon is getting up there in years, he shows very little sign of slowing down, coming into this weekend tied for the lead with Alex Palou. He finished strong last season, winning 3 of the last 4 to come up just short, but he is out to a faster start in 2024. He already has 1 win and tends to do very well in Detroit. A podium finish for Dixon looks to be a good bet.

Will Power
Power is another driver that was impacted by the illegal software issue earlier this season, but he was not hurt as hard as others, suffering a 10-point deduction. Had he not suffered that loss, he would be sitting in 1st place overall right now. Power is still looking for his first win of the season, but he has been close several times, finishing in 2nd in 3 races this year. He might get that elusive first win this weekend, as he finished 1st and 2nd, respectively, in each of the last 2 Detroit Grand Prix.
^Pato O’Ward
After getting out to a fantastic start with a win in the opening race of the season, O’Ward then went on a rather unimpressive run, going 3 straight races without really getting close to cracking the top 10. He needed a big performance, which is exactly what he got in the Indianapolis 500, finishing 2nd in that one. It is going to be interesting to see if he can build on that and deliver the goods in Detroit. He won this race in 2021, so keep an eye on O’Ward.
