2023 IndyCar Season: Analysis and Betting Opportunities | IndyCar Odds

  • When: March 5 – Sep. 10

IndyCar will find it difficult to maintain momentum after St. Petersburg

The season starts on March 5 with a street race in St. Petersburg, Florida. NBC and Peacock will air the race, which should lead to decent ratings.

The problem is that the next race, the second event on the IndyCar schedule, doesn’t happen until April 2 when drivers and manufacturers head to Texas.

The third event on the schedule doesn’t happen until April 16, which means newer fans could become disinterested due to so many weeks between races to start the season.

If IndyCar can keep fans interested early, they might keep them until the finale on Sep. 10

If fans tune in for the Barber Motorsports Park road course race on April 30, there’s a good chance they will turn in to every race that follows. From April 30 to Sep. 10, IndyCar runs a race every two weeks.

The schedule isn’t as full as what NASCAR does, which is run a race every week and then has a playoff, but it should be full enough to encourage younger fans to tune in, which is the goal.

If IndyCar markets right, they will see their best ever ratings in 2023

NBC and their sister network USA along with the company’s broadcast platform, Peacock, have committed to show every IndyCar race this season.

NBC might even broadcast a race in primetime. The best possibility for a primetime race could be the event at the World Wide Technology Raceway on August 27. The season’s final oval race is perfect for a night time audience.

IndyCar’s upper management should be encouraging NBC to broadcast the race at the WWT in prime time. Doing so could really help IndyCar build viewership.

Early Picks for the 2023 IndyCar Drivers Championship

  • Top Pick: Scott McLaughlin

The 2022 IndyCar winner for Most Improved Driver almost assuredly will keep it going in 2023. McLaughlin came to IndyCar with a reputation as being one of the greatest Australian Supercar drivers in history.

McLaughlin won the St. Petersburg race. Then at Texas in the second race, he almost won before Josef Newgarden got by him in the final jump.

He won two more races in 2022. A crash at the Indianapolis 500 ended his dreams of lifting the trophy. Even after the crash, McLaughlin still managed to finish fourth in the drivers standings.

  • Second Pick: Josef Newgarden

Newgarden finished second behind Will Power. The problem Newgarden had was in the races he didn’t win, he also didn’t finish in the top five.

So although Newgarden won five races, and Power won a single event, Newgarden found himself relegated to second. No doubt, Josef knows what went wrong this past season. So expect efforts with an eye on winning the drivers title as well as taking checkered flags.

  • Third Pick: Will Power

Power knows how to win titles. Although Will took one checkered flag, at the Detroit Grand Prix, he managed to grab the big prize. The way he did it was to finish third in six races, second in two races, and fourth in three races.

Power always has a strategy. 2023 won’t be any different. So Will is, again, a top contender to grab the Drivers Championship.
