With the previous rally in Estonia, the WRC crossed the midway mark of the season. There are now 7 races in the books and just 6 to come, and while a lot can happen in that time, you do have to say that catching the current leader in the driver standings is going to be no easy task. There are still plenty of points up for grabs, but given the current point totals, someone is going to need to start making a move sooner rather than later. The first opportunity for the chasing pack to try and close the gap comes this weekend, with the drivers in Finland for the next rally on the schedule. If you look back at previous versions of this race, you see that there might just be an opportunity for someone to close the gap, but who might that be. Let’s take a look at some of the potential WRC Betting favorites.
2022 Secto Automotive Rally Finland Analysis and Preview | WRC Betting Picks
Kalle Rovanpera
As it stands at the moment, you have to say that the title is Rovanpera’s to lose, and that the chances of him somehow going in the tank in the second half of the season see somewhat unlikely. The reality of the matter is that Rovanpera has been about as close to unstoppable as it gets this season, winning 5 of the 7 races to this point, including each of the last 2. You would fancy him to keep that streak alive heading into this weekend, with the race in his native Finland, but this is a rally where he has routinely struggled. Tough to bet against him, but maybe there is a chance he slips up this weekend.
Thierry Neuville
While there are a few drivers who could technically get on a run and catch Rovanpera, it would be Neuville who has the most realistic chance to do so. With 92 points on the season, he is 13 ahead of the next closest driver, but he is also 83 points back of Rovanpera, so he needs to start picking up wins immediately. The problem here is that he has yet to take a checkered flag this season, plus he has not had a ton of success in this location. We might need to look elsewhere for a challenger in Finland.
Elfyn Evans
The next 2 drivers that we are going to discuss are almost 100 points out of the lead, which, with just 6 races to come, means that they are very close to being officially eliminated from world championship contention. Of course, these guys are going to keep pushing all the way to the end, but can they get a win this weekend. Evans does not have a win this season, but he does have a pair of 2nd place finishes. On a positive note, he won in Finland last season.
Ott Tanak
If I was going to go against Rovanpera and take one of the chasing pack to win this weekend, my money would be on Tanak. He does have a win in 2022, with that one coming in Italy, but it is his performances in Finland that need to be paid attention to. He finished 2nd there last season and won in 2019. Keep in mind that the WRC did not race in Finland in 2020. Tanak certainly has a great history with this rally, so I might take a shot with him.
I have read enough, I need to place my bet now. What to do?
