Writer’s Olympic Men’s Basketball Gold Picks
Gold: Canada
Although the U.S. was dominating South Sudan at the time of this writing, the Canadians remain the top choice to win gold.
Canada is dominating what was supposed to be the group of death, beating Giannis and Greece 86-79 and dusting Australia by ten points in a 93-83 game.
In both wins, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, RJ Barrett, and Dillon Brooks paced the Canadians, which is good news if you’re a Canada fan.
Why? Because Andrew Nembhard, Jamal Murray, and Dwight Powell can step it up if required.
Canada matches up well with the U.S.
In fact, the Canadians may have the stronger group of guards, which could lead to an Oh Canada gold medal moment.
Silver: United States
No doubt, beating the U.S. is going to be tough.
A team that can bring Jayson Tatum and Kevin Durant off the bench is almost impossible to beat.
But Steve Kerr is already having trouble figuring out his lineup.
He was way too apologetic for not playing Tatum in the United States’ first game.
The whole thing reeked of catering to the star mentality that seems to pervade the U.S. squad.
When it comes down to it, backing the Americans at -550 represents underlay odds.
The U.S. should win gold, but it feels as if Canada, or even Germany, is ready to upset the United States.
Bronze: Germany
The Germans are a well-coached and solid group.
Granted, we will know more about Germany when they take on France on August 2.
So far, things have gone as planned with wins against Japan and Brazil.
Germany beat the U.S. at last year’s World Championships.
So the team can hang with the Americans.
However, picking Germany over both the United States and Canada is asking a lot.
So choosing Germany to win bronze makes sense.

2020 Tokyo Olympics Men’s & Women’s Basketball: Quarterfinal Matches to Bet On
Previous Betting News
This week is a big one for the basketball players at the Olympic Games in Tokyo, as they head out of the group stages and into the knockout rounds. The quarterfinals are here on both the men’s and women’s side of things, with the men getting started first on Monday night, while the women will see their quarterfinal games start on the 4th. There are some definite favorites on both sides, but we have already seen some surprises. Will that carry over into the knockout stages or will the cream rise to the top now that the games take on a whole new level of importance? Let’s look at both, men and women tournaments to see how things are shaping up so you can continue betting against the Olympics Betting odds.
Olympics Basketball Women’s and Men’s Quarter-Final Matches
Men’s Basketball
The general consensus was that the American men would roll to their 5th consecutive gold medal, but they have not looked particularly good throughout this tournament, dropping a game to France in the group stage. The US will face Spain in the quarterfinal matchup and will be favorites given that they are a perfect 12-0 in games versus Spain. This one, though, might be closer than a lot of people expect.
The Australians are looking for their first Olympic medal in basketball, but they are going to have a tough path to the final 4, as they will need to get past Argentina, with the winner of that game potentially meeting the U.S. Argentina are one of the oldest squads in the tournament, but they are also the last team other than the United States to win gold.
On the other side of the bracket, we have Slovenia squaring off against Germany. Slovenia looked very good in the group stage, going unbeaten in their 3 games. They will be hoping that Luka Doncic continues to deliver the goods.
France, who beat the U.S. and also went unbeaten in group play, will go against Itayl in what is likely to be a bit of a defensive tussle. Neither of these two teams light things up on the offensive side of the court, so expect a tight one.
Women’s Basketball
At the time of writing, we are still waiting to see how the quarterfinals will shape up, as there is one more group game to be played on Monday night. What we do know is that 7 of the 8 teams moving on have been decided. The final games sees Australia and Puerto Rico go head-to-head, with Canada waiting in the wings to see if they will land one of the two 3rd place finisher spots.
The seeds for the quarterfinals are China, the US, and Spain, all of whom went unbeaten through the group stage. Belgium will also be seeded after finishing 2-1.
The unseeded teams are Serbia, Japan, and France, with that final spot just waiting to be filled on Monday night. Once we know who that final team is, we will know who will face who in the quarterfinals. You do have to say, though, that the American women look like the team to beat at this point.

Tokyo 2020 Olympics – Event Rundown: What Can I Bet On the Weekend?
Previous Betting News
MyBookie returns with the Tokyo 2020 Olympics event rundown, where we take a look at the betting options for weekend sporting events. Here are our best bets for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics with three bets for Saturday, July 31, and Sunday, August 1 and all the information you’ll need to know to place bets on Olympics Betting Odds.
2020 Tokyo Olympics: Betting Options for July 31st and August 1st Events
Olympic Men’s Basketball Tournament Betting Preview
Iran vs France
When: Saturday, July 31
Iran have lost both of their Tokyo 2020 Olympics openers against the Czech Republic (84-78) and the USA (120-66). They’re now set to face France, who are expected to hand Iran another heavy loss.
Iran have some solid pieces and can be competitive on the right day, but after seeing what they’ve produced of late, it’s hard to envision anything but a third straight loss on Saturday. Not only have Iran underperformed at the Olympics, but they’re also winless in their last five and hold an underwhelming 3-7 record in their last ten outings.
France enter this match with a perfect 2-0 record in the tournament. They have beaten the USA (83-76) and Czech Republic (97-77) without any real issues.
It’s still very early, but France are showing exceptional form, which is a welcome change to their pre-Olympics showings. France are 2-4 in their last six; however, we must value their recent results higher than their 0-4 run in early July.
The French should be able to seal the deal here with another straightforward win.
Prediction: France -26.5 points
Italy vs Nigeria
When: Saturday, July 31
Italy were unable to build on their success after beating Germany (92-82) and fell to Australia, who handed them a painful 83-86 defeat on Wednesday. Having suffered a loss in the second round is a significant setback for Italy and their chances of winning the group; however, they still stand a solid chance of getting back on track with a win here.
On Saturday, Italy will cross swords with the winless Nigeria, who fell against Australia (67-84) and Germany (92-99) and are now on a three-game losing streak. During the pre-Olympics friendlies, Nigeria already lost to Australia, who demolished them with 108-68.
On a more positive note, Nigeria won five in a row prior to their dry streak, where they defeated South Korea (108-66), Ivory Coast (83-66), China (86-73), USA (90-87), and Argentina (94-71).
This will be a tough match for Nigeria; however, you have to show some respect for their solid showing against Germany. Expecting Nigeria to defeat the win-hungry Italians might be a bit too optimistic, but we have seen enough from them to be hopeful that Nigeria can keep this one close.
Prediction: Nigeria +7.5 points
Olympic Men’s 100m Dash Betting Preview
When: Saturday, July 31
Men’s Olympics 100m dash kicks off on Saturday, July 31, featuring some of the fastest athletes in the world, who duke it out for a golden medal at Tokyo Olympics Stadium.
These Olympics feature a very competitive field; however, there is one name that stands out. Trayvon Bromell traveled to Japan as the man to beat, having won six of seven 100m races on the year, which includes the most recent Müller British Grand Prix, where he posted 9.98.
What’s more, Bromell has recorded his fastest 100m time earlier this year at 9.77. While he is definitely the rightful favorite, he will face tough competition in Ronnie Baker (+350), who has also posted a sub-10 second this year.
Bromell looks like a safe pick at -150, but there is far more value to be found with Baker at +350. Baker’s best time of the year was 9.85, which is still slower than Bromell; however, there is one more thing to consider.
Baker won 100 meters at Monaco Diamond League at the start of July, with 9.91. He finished ahead of Akani Simbine, Marcell Jacobs, De Gasse, and Bromell, who managed only fourth.
If Bromell shows his best form in Japan, he will likely win, but if the odds-on favorite stumbles like he had earlier this month, Baker will be right there to steal the spotlight.
Prediction: Ronnie Baker to win

Tokyo 2020 Olympics – Event Rundown: What Can I Bet On Friday, July 30th?
Previous Betting News
MyBookie brings you the Tokyo 2020 Olympics event rundown, where we take a look at which sporting events you can bet on Friday, July 30th. 2020 Tokyo Olympics: Betting Options for July 30th Events
Olympic Women’s Basketball Tournament Betting Preview
USA vs Japan
When: Friday, July 30th
Time: 12:40 a.m. ET
The USA national team got off to a strong start with (81-72) victory against Nigeria and will now look to make it two in a row as they face the host nation of Japan. The hosts enter this match off a very impressive showing against France, who they beat 74-70, which extended their win streak to six in a row.
During that stretch, the Japanese won against Portugal (69-47, 68-43, 67-58), Belgium (84-76), and Puerto Rico (94-59). Japan have been showing excellent form, and their win against France could serve as a big morale booster.
Given their form, there is a chance that Japan will cause an upset, but that’s a lot to ask of them since they are facing the tournament favorites, who haven’t shown any weaknesses of late. USA’s only loss since August 2018 came against Australia (67-70) in the pre-Olympics friendly.
That translates to a 17-2 record across the last two years. What’s more, the USA trashed Japan 110-64 back at the 2016 Olympics. We expect Japan to show some resilience, but it likely won’t be enough to edge out the USA women’s basketball team.
Prediction: USA -18.5 points
France vs Nigeria
When: Friday, July 30th
France were edged out by Japan (70-74) in their Tokyo 2020 Olympics opener and will now seek to get back on track with a win against Nigeria. They should feel hopeful about their chances to grab a W on Friday, knowing that they have already won this affair back in 2018 with 84-62.
Although a lot of time has passed since, one thing has remained the same. The French national basketball team are still viewed as a firm favorite by the bookmakers. Nigeria were priced as +450 outsiders last time out and are now at +275.
Nigeria lost to the USA’s women’s basketball team on Tuesday with 72-81, after they’ve already lost to the same opponent (62-92) in the pre-Olympics friendly. With those defeats, Nigeria are now on a five-match losing streak, which included losses to Belgium (47-79, 60-67) and Spain (52-61).
With the form Nigeria have been showing of late, it’s hard to make a case for them here. They might have had some good moments against the USA last time out, but it seems highly unlikely that they’ll manage to break their dry streak on Friday or even come close to it.
Prediction: France -7.5
China vs Australia
When: Friday, July 30th
Time: 8 a.m. ET
Australia enters this match as a heavy betting favorite (-238), which makes a lot of sense. Although China made a strong start to their Tokyo 2020 Olympics campaign with a 97-55 victory against Puerto Rico, it would be a lot to ask from them to see the same success against the Aussies.
With their commanding victory against Puerto Rico, China are now on a four-game winning streak, which includes wins against Great Britain (86-76), Spain (64-62), and South Korea (100-60). Outside of their upset win against Spain (where China were priced as +650 underdogs), they have not produced anything worth celebrating, considering they were expected to dominate all of the remaining three bouts.
This is a must-win match for the Australian team, who need to bounce back following their loss against Belgium (70-85) in the tournament opener. Trust the current no.2 on the FIBA Rankings to deliver and get back on track on Friday!
Prediction: Australia -5.5 points

2020 Tokyo Olympics: Betting Options for July 29th Events
Previous Betting News
MyBookie returns with Tokyo 2020 Olympics event rundown, where we take a look at which events you can bet on Thursday, July 29. Here are our best bets for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, including three basketball matches, with all the information you’ll ever need to place bets on Olympics Betting Odds.
Tokyo 2020 Olympics – Event Rundown: What can I bet on Thursday, July 29?
Olympic Men’s Basketball Tournament Betting Preview for Thursday, July 29
Japan Vs Slovenia
When: Thursday, July 29
Slovenia produced a phenomenal display in their 118-100 victory against Argentina on Monday. It marked a historic moment for the small central-European nation who won their debut at the Olympics and are slowly proving themselves serious candidates for an Olympic medal.
With that win, Slovenia are now on a seven-game winning streak. That leaves Japan with a daunting prospect as they look to bounce back following a 77-88 loss to Spain in the tournament opener.
On a more positive note, Japan held on well against Spain and managed to keep the score relatively tight, but knowing how deadly Slovenia can be in the attack, achieving the same success on Thursday won’t be easy. Stopping Luka Doncic (who has scored 48 points against Argentina) will be essential for Japan; however, with the performance they have shown against Spain, it’s hard to believe they’ll manage to achieve it.
Slovenia have been impressive in the attack against Argentines, which saw them score 118 points. On the back of such a commanding victory, the Slovenes should be capable of covering the 20.5 points spread.
Prediction: Slovenia -20.5 points
Spain Vs Argentina
When: Thursday, July 29
Argentina suffered a heavy loss in their 2020 Tokyo Olympics basketball tournament opener when they suffered an 18-points loss against Slovenia. Results like that hardly inspire much confidence, and it’s easy to see why many believe things could get much worse for the Argentines against Spain.
Spain won against Japan (88-77), marking their eighth win from their last nine outings. Their only defeat during that stretch happened against the USA in the pre-Olympics tournament when they lost 76-83.
Spain is 8-1 in the head-to-head against Argentina since the 2004 Olympic Games and have won all of their last five meetings. These two nations last met in the finals of the 2019 World Cup, where Spain won with 96-76.
Anything can happen at the Olympics, but considering the history between these two nations and Argentina’s poor form, it would be a major surprise if the Argentines can cause an upset. Spain should get it done with at least 8.5 points to spare.
Prediction: Spain -8.5 points
Olympic Women’s Basketball Tournament Betting Preview for Thursday, July 29
Spain Vs Serbia
When: Thursday, July 29
Spain edged out South Korea (73-69) in their opener of the Olympics, while Serbia managed almost the exact same score against the Canadian national team (72-68) on Monday. Considering their performances in the last round, this one promises to be a close affair, but something has to give.
Both Spain and Serbia have done just enough to secure their first win of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, so it’s hard to set them apart. These two nations last met in June in the quarter-finals of the Women’s European Championship, when Serbia came out ahead with a 71-64 overtime win.
Considering how closely matched Serbia and Spain were just a month back, we can expect another tight affair on Thursday. If you’re feeling lucky, a bet on a draw could earn you a high payout; however, when picking out a winner, we have to take the plus money on Spain to avenge their loss and level the score with the Eagles.
Prediction: Serbia to win

Previous Betting News
The 2020 Tokyo Olympics are in full swing, providing us with plenty of sporting events to follow, and most importantly, to bet on. With an abundance of sporting events happening around the clock, it might be difficult to find strong bets, which is where we come in.
MyBookie brings you a selection of the best bets for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, where we take a look at two events and provide you with betting previews and our picks, with all the information you’ll ever need to place bets against their Olympics Betting Odds.
Tokyo 2020 Olympics – Event Rundown: What can I bet on Monday, July 26?
-Olympic Men’s Basketball Tournament Betting Preview for Monday, July 26-
Japan Vs Spain
When: Monday, July 26
Japan and Spain will cross swords on Monday, July 26, in the opening round of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics basketball tournament. It will mark the first meeting between these two nations since the 2006 World Cup when Spain demolished Japan 104-55.
To no one’s surprise, Spain enter the match as a heavy betting favorite (-3333), while you can back the host nation at +1201 to upset the 2019 World Champions. Given the obvious gap quality between the two teams, it makes little to no sense to side with Japan, while betting on Spain presents us with little to no value.
Instead, it’s worth exploring the points spread. Spain enter this match with a 4-1 record in their last five, which includes wins against France (87-79, 86-77) and Iran (96-53, 88-61), and a 76-83 loss against the USA.
Japan managed a 3-2 record in their last five outings with losses against China (84-90) and Iran (67-72), and three wins against France (81-75) and Iran (76-50, 85-57).
Japan have proven to be a much more formidable opponent than many expected, and their win against France proves that. Even though they’re clearly a much weaker team than Spain, the points handicap (19.5) seems a bit high for the opening match of the tournament.
We like the hosts with a 19.5 points advantage here.
Prediction: Japan +19.5 points
-Olympic Women’s Handball Tournament Betting Preview for Monday, July 26-
Bahrain Vs Portugal
When: Monday, July 26
Bahrain and Portugal will clash in the second round of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics Handball tournament in what is billed as a one-sided affair. However, we don’t quite agree with that.
Bahrain enter the match following a devastating 31-32 loss against Sweden in their tournament opener. They held an 18-16 lead by the end of the first half but then threw it all away and allowed Sweden to steal the win.
Even though Bahrain lost the match, they played exceptionally well, especially if you consider that they were priced as +2100 underdogs. This, however, wasn’t the first time Bahrain proved they should not be underestimated, having beaten Argentina (32-27) just a week prior as +326 outsiders.
Portugal lost their tournament opener against Egypt (31-37), which marked their third loss across their last five outings. Portugal already slipped against Spain (32-28) and Brazil (28-34) during their warm-up matches for the Olympics.
Portugal might be one of the best teams in the world; however, they haven’t been showing that recently. They have been struggling against significantly weaker nations before, and there is nothing that would suggest that will change here.
A smaller position on Bahrain to stun the favorites is definitely something to consider, but if you’re looking for some security, Bahrain, with a 4.5 goals advantage, is the way to go.
Prediction: Bahrain to win

Rio 2016 Men’s Basketball Expert Betting Picks
Previous Betting News
With mind-blowing Olympic basketball odds north of -1000 in most sportsbooks to win it all in Rio, it goes without saying that there a lot of expectations when Team USA begins its journey this weekend in the quest for the 2016 Rio Men Basketball Gold. This, mind you, is in spite of the fact that Team USA will be without most of its biggest stars, including LeBron James, Stephen Curry, James Harden, Chris Paul, Anthony Davis, Kahwi Leonard and Dwayne Wade, just to mention a few. So, is Team USA really that good, or are there teams that look the part of being able to upset the huge mountain in NBA’s No. 1 villain Kevin Durant and the USA Basketball team? Read on as we guide your picks in the section below.
Let’s Take a Look at the Rio 2016 Men’s Basketball Expert Betting Picks & Groups
Group A: Australia, China, France, Serbia, USA, Venezuela
Group B: Argentina, Brazil, Croatia, Lithuania, Nigeria, Spain
My 2016 Olympics Men Basketball Gold Medal Favorite Pick: USA
Even without King James and Chef Curry, the USA basketball team is still heavily stacked up and loaded with talent all over the court. From Durant to his new Golden State teammates in Klay Thompson and Draymond Green, along with All-Star sharpshooters in like Kyle Irving, Paul George and Carmelo Anthony, plus All-World centers in DeMarcus Cousins and DeAndre Jordan; this team is as solid as can ever be. And that is before we talk about Mike Krzyewski’s otherworldly record of 78-1 as team USA’s national head coach. With that, it’s hard to make a case against the Americans as undeserving favorites. And scoping at their already-scared competitors, it will probably take a galactic catastrophe for USA not to bring back the basketball gold at the end of the Rio 2016 Olympics.
My 2016 Olympics Men Basketball Gold Medal Smart Picks: France/ Spain
While most people are high on Spain as the next best team in Rio after USA, reasonable logic pushes to me to opt for France as the smart pick after Team USA. For starters, France easily cruised in its qualifiers and looks well-set for a medal-worthy run as the No. 5-ranked team in FIBA. Besides that momentum, the French boast of some of the best talents from the NBA, including veteran guard Tony Parker, forwards Nicolas Batum and Boris Diaw, and a heck of a center in Rudy Gobert. Should Team USA not take the French seriously in Group A, an upset could easily be in the books in Rio
It’s understandable if you feel that Spain should be the top-most smart pick and not France. Matter of fact, with Team Spain playing in Group B, it will avoid the misfortune of having to play USA in the early stages of the championship, and that should bring a lot of value to their side. Not to mention, as the No. 2-ranked team in FIBA and two-time finalists over the past two Olympics, the Spanish team must have learnt a thing or two about how to exploit USA’s weakness, assuming they have any. That said, Team Spain will be missing the stellar services of big men Marc Gasol and Serge Ibaka, which could make it difficult for them to contain the many big men in America’s squad. But then again, with household NBA names like Ricky Rubio, Nikola Mirotic and Pau Gasol to lead a very talent-laden Spain squad, Team ESP may just end up being the team to play USA for the third straight Olympics basketball final, hopefully doing better than they did in their 11-point loss to the Americans in 2008 and 7-point loss to U.S. in 2012.
My 2016 Olympics Men Basketball Gold Medal Longshot Picks: Lithuania/Argentina
The teams worthy of keeping an eye on here include Lithuania and Argentina, especially if either (or both) of them are able to take advantage of their strong team-oriented basketball, as opposed to the can-hit- or-miss hero basketball often employed by star-studded teams like USA and Spain
USA vs. Venezuela Olympic Basketball Expert Predictions
Previous Betting News
Part of the allure of the Olympic Games is watching athletes who have trained their whole lives for their moment in the sun. These are men and women who will probably never see a whole lot of fan adoration, and who will likely head back to full-time jobs when the Games are over. The same cannot be said in the men’s basketball tournament, as it features a slew of household names that we are all used to watching in the NBA. It can be argued that these guys don’t really belong in an event like this, but what can’t be argued is that it makes the games in the Olympic basketball tournament a whole lot more entertaining, albeit sometimes one-sided. The games that fall into that latter category are the ones that feature the latest version of the US Dream Team. That bunch will hit the court again on Monday night, and if it’s a game that you plan on wagering on, I suggest that the betting lines you pay attention to are the point spread and the OVER/UNDER.
USA vs. Venezuela Olympic Basketball Expert Predictions
When: Monday, Aug 8 at 6 PM EST
Where: Carioca Arena, Rio
TV: NBCSN
Olympic Basketball Odds: TBA
Why Bet on the USA?
The bigger question here is why would you consider betting against the US men’s basketball team? The reality of the situation here is that you could put together any combination of 5 players on the US roster and still have a team capable of beating every other team in the tournament quite handily. The US opened up their Olympic on Saturday, routing China 119-62 in a victory that everyone saw coming. As I mentioned at that start of this piece, you are not going to win any real money betting this team to win, so you really have to look at the spread and the point totals for value here. Given that this group will not want to be considered the worst of the Olympic Dream Team’s, always look for them to pile on the pain.
Why Bet on Venezuela?
Venezuela are in the Olympic men’s basketball tournament thanks to a win at the 2015 FIBA Americas Championship, where they beat Argentina in the final. Things figure to be a little tougher here, as they quickly found out in an 86-62 loss to Serbia in their opening game. The Venezuelans faced the US during the warm-ups for the Olympics, and ended up going down 80-45 in that one. What was most notable from that game was that a lot of the US shooters did not play particularly well, which is not something that is likely to be repeated in a game that really matters.
Expert Pick and Final Score Prediction
This is yet another mismatch on the road to what should be a gold medal for the US men’s basketball team. We are looking at a potential rout here, especially since Venezuela has no NBA players of their own to counter with.
Score Prediction: USA 105 Venezuela 51Rio 2016 Men’s Basketball Betting Pick
Previous Betting News
To no surprise, the American men, led by Kevin Durant, are the heavy Olympic betting favorites to win another Olympic gold medal in basketball and they are also huge 49.5-point favorites for Monday evening’s game against Venezuela. The total is 166.5 points.
Taking a Closer Look at the Rio 2016 Men’s Basketball Betting Pick
The Americans opened the Olympics against China and cruised 119-62. Durant, USA’s leading scorer at the London Olympics, was the pace-setter again with 25 points, 4 rebounds, 6 assists and a steal on 10-for-14 shooting from the floor. Carmelo Anthony, who had 9 points, 7 rebounds, 2 assists, one steal and one block, tied LeBron James and David Robinson for most Olympic games played for the United States with 24. The score was tied at 4-4 early on when the USA began to heat up. Ignited by a dunk from DeMarcus Cousins (Sacramento Kings), the USA reeled off nine unanswered points to lead 13-4 at 5:10 when China called a timeout. The game was basically over after that. The USA previously topped China 106-57 on July 24 in Los Angeles and 107-57 on July 26 in Oakland in friendlies
The 57-point victory this time was the United States’ biggest in a win in an opening game of the Olympics since the Dream Team beat Angola by 68 in 1992. The USA is now 17-0 in Olympic play all time under Coach Mike Krzyzewski. This will be his final Olympics as the head coach
Venezuela lost its opening game in Group A play against Serbia on Saturday. Gregory Echenique and Jose Vargas led Venezuela with 12 points each in the 86-62 defeat. Venezuela, likely the weakest team in the field, shot just 37 percent from the field against Serbia and made just 4-of- 22 from 3-point range
The Americans beat Venezuela 80-45 a few weeks ago in Indianapolis in exhibition play. Klay Thompson and Kyrie Irving led the U.S. scoring with 13 points each. Overall, the team hit just 4-of- 25 3-pointers and shot just 42 percent from the field. Paul George sat out with a strained calf but is healthy now. Getting to Rio is an achievement in itself for the Venezuelans, who are now ranked 22 in the world and qualified by making the final of the 2015 FIBA Americas Championship
The second-best team in this tournament was thought to be Spain but it was upset by Croatia over the weekend 72-70. Bojan Bogdanovic (Brooklyn Nets) was a constant scoring threat and finished with a game-high 23 points. Dario Saric preserved the win when he came from the weak side and blocked a game-tying attempt from Pau Gasol at the end. Gasol of course is an multiple-time NBA All-Star who signed with the San Antonio Spurs this offseason. Saric will play for the Philadelphia 76ers as a rookie in 2016-17. Memphis Grizzlies star Marc Gasol’s absence this summer was something to worry about heading into Rio for Spain, and it was felt greatly against Croatia. Spain was outrebounded 41-30 and gave up 10 offensive rebounds
Spain finds itself in unchartered territory as they didn’t lose their opener during their 2008 and 2012 Olympic silver medal runs. They will look to bounce back against Brazil on Tuesday. Spain’s roster has seven current NBA players, three former NBA players, and a draft pick (Sergio Llull) who could have come over and had an NBA career if he had wanted to.
